Can't believe I didn't used to shower before bed.

I have fine, thin hair that needs washing every morning or it looks greasy. For YEARS I have showered every morning, gone about my day, and then fallen into bed at the end of the day. Didn't really think about it.

But recently I have started having a quick shower just before bed and it has changed everything! It is SO NICE being all clean and getting into a nice clean bed. I am now horrified by the idea of falling into bed all covered in the day's grime to marinade all night. Yuck. (I do still shower in the morning too - can't face the day without washing my hair).

Evening showers. 10/10. Highly recommend.

I am absolutely covered in grime by the evening. I am now and I’m off for a shower before bed. I’m not judging anyone, I won’t be showering in the morning - one a day is enough for me but yes I’m at my dirtiest after a day of exertion. Today I’ve been to work and moved and sweated, I’ve been on my feet for 14+ hours, I’ve made a rather pungent curry, weeded the garden, kneaded bread, it’s been a long and quite warm day. I’ve had my hair under a headscarf and it’s sweated. I’ve been wearing sunscreen and make up, I’ve got my period.

Yesterday I walked 14 miles and had sex. The day before I went on for a massage and got covered in oil. The day before that I went for a run (only for an embarrassing 4 miles but I’m working on it). Tomorrow I am going running with a friend.

Every night I am sweaty, tired, warm, literally mucky from the earth and the sun and from cleaning and cooking and just being. I shower before bed. In the morning I wake up and I’m nice and clean so I got to work and everything is fine!

But what about the environment? It's incredibly wasteful to shower twice a day or - dare I say it - even every day. Running water is a gift that many people on our planet don't have, and those of us that are lucky enough to have bathrooms and showers should be conserving water as best we can.

oh please. People do far worse things environmentally, including having kids. My conscience is clear.

I don’t think sniffing and asking how people are getting “grimy” or “mucky” is the flex some pp think it is. It just means that you’re sitting around indoors doing nothing. Grin

I have to shower and wash my hair every night because I’m active and outdoors constantly. My horses need training rides most days so I’m getting dirty setting jumps and ground poles. Riding itself is often dusty, and helmets are hot and sweaty. Horses are also hot and sweaty. And slobbery, and hairy. And usually covered in mud or dust.

You’d better believe that I need to shower everything nightly, and that’s without adding gardening or surfing or anything else. 😂

Hahaha I forgot I started this thread. Some of these comments are just wonderful. Will try the 3am shower and sheets change and let you know how I go.

Hooray for those who agree that an evening shower is the best! And I totally agree @TomatoSandwiches , it's great for my mental health.

Everyone who thinks they're not grimy by the end of the day - I used to think that too!!

Environmental impact - I bet my 2 very short showers are a lot less than most people who have much more hair than me.

How do I get so filthy? I'm a primary school teacher. If you know, you know.

To those of you wondering how you get grimey and gross throughout the day:

  • You sweat, especially at this time of year when it's getting warm
  • You use communal toilets at work and in public that are filthy. You don't know if the person before you has peed on the seat and wiped it before you sat on it. Don't know about you, but I don't feel clean knowing I might have been near someone else's urine traces
  • You touch all sorts of things, and expose yourself all sorts of germs when you are out and about: dirty knobs, sitting on dirty seats on the bus, sitting next to other sweaty people, etc
  • You have cooked dinner, which means food smells will seep into your skin and clothes

I guess people can cope with different levels of dirt etc.
If I felt I had got sweaty, I would have have a shower and I obviously always do after sport. If I had sat next to someone sweaty, but made no contact with them I possibly wouldn't!
I saw (and smelt!) a homeless man on the train yesterday but didn't have a shower til this morning.
I always wash my hands thoroughly after coming indoors from work, shopping, cooking etc

I've been on camping holidays where I haven't showered for days, and nothing bad happened!

NotOnlyMercutio · 29/04/2025 08:02

I love an evening shower, but I save it for a special treat. After a particularly bad day at work I shower as soon as I get in. And one of the best things for me about being on holiday is showering twice a day, sometimes even three times, I love it! I wash my hair every time I shower, I love that too.
But in general my routine is just first thing in the morning, to save my water and heating bills.
DH is also a morning person, DC prefer evening but will have the occasional morning shower.

I use deodorant

I don’t use toilets that are ‘filthy’.. communal toilets at work usually have a cleaner?!

I wash my hands several times a day

Exposure to germs is actually good for your immune system

I don’t feel covered in grime when I go to bed

I do wonder how the human race has survived thus far without everyone taking evening showers.

Hey, don't knock a nocturnal shower, 😂 Epitome of relaxation right there!

user499978802 · 29/04/2025 15:20

DH has always showered both morning and night. I started showering at night when my workouts shifted from morning to late in the day, and now I shower every night even on days I don't run or work out.

I turn off all the lights and light a candle in the bathroom. Wash my face with oil cleanser and a muslin, dry body brush, wrap my hair up, shower and moisturise. Takes about 10 minutes total and I'm almost ridiculously relaxed getting into bed. I also shower some mornings, depending on the day, but often just wash my hair over the tub with the sprayer attachment.

I'm not worried about germs, nor do I think the world will come to an end if everyone doesn't do the same, but I love the way it feels and definitely sleep better for it. To each their own, as they say.

Pickingmyselfup · 29/04/2025 16:39

I mostly prefer evening showers unless I've been up a bit for a morning one. I hate hate hate getting in as soon as I get out of bed, it makes me feel awful.

I just have one as and when I need to and wash my hair when I need to even if that means washing it 2 days in a row or skipping 2 days of hair wash. It's a much easier way to live than thinking I have to shower at x time regardless of what I've been doing. If I were ever to have a whole weekend of lazing around totally alone, showered Friday morning, why would I need another one both Saturday and Sunday. Monday morning would be absolutely fine assuming I was working Monday morning. I could even leave the house to nip to the shop on Sunday and as long as my clothes were clean, I had deodorant on and had brushed my teeth nobody would be able to tell I hadn't showered since Friday.

For all the greasy haired gals - mousse. Game changer.

If I put mousse in after I've washed my hair - my hair is always less greasy/stays fresher for longer.

If, on the very rare occasion, I can't apply mousse after washing my hair - the difference is insane - so much flatter/greasier.

Could never go back now!

Hi @SnailandWhal do you have any mousse recommendations please? Thanks

Your hair is greasy because you’ve stripped all the natural oils out. Hair isn’t meant to be washed everyday.

I disagree. My DS and I both have very greasy hair. I wash it every day because if I don’t I end up with weeping scabs on my scalp. During lockdown DS stopped the daily hair washing and only washed it once a week. For months. His hair was still like a pan of grease by day 2. Some people are just greasier than others. You can’t train your hair to be not greasy.

No way!
cornflour would make a sauce in your hair

🤣 it really does work. Try it ! Some one on you tube recommended it. Just brush it on leave it 5 mins and brush your hair.. done.

BadLad · 11/05/2025 02:02

Morning shower to wake up and feel refreshed.

Evening shower because I like to be clean in bed. Sometimes the evening shower is followed by a relaxing bath.

DW has hers in the evening.
