Can't believe I didn't used to shower before bed.

I have fine, thin hair that needs washing every morning or it looks greasy. For YEARS I have showered every morning, gone about my day, and then fallen into bed at the end of the day. Didn't really think about it.

But recently I have started having a quick shower just before bed and it has changed everything! It is SO NICE being all clean and getting into a nice clean bed. I am now horrified by the idea of falling into bed all covered in the day's grime to marinade all night. Yuck. (I do still shower in the morning too - can't face the day without washing my hair).

Evening showers. 10/10. Highly recommend.

Unfortunately not true for everyone. I see people say this on the internet all the time so I went 6 months only washing my hair twice a week to try and "train" my hair. Didn't work and instead I just spent half a year with shit, greasy hair.

Same for me. I’ve tried every single thing to avoid having to wash my hair every day. Nothing works. I just end up with greasy hair. Weird that people don’t realise that not everyone’s hair is the same.

blobby10 · 28/04/2025 11:48

I have always showered before bed - used to bath my children as part of their bedtime routine too and they have all grown up preferring a quick shower at bedtime. Its not less environmentally friendly as you don't need to change the bedsheets as often if you're getting in clean!! Grin

JFC, are we really at the stage where we're being judged for not showing TWICE A DAY? I despair

ChampagneBlossom44 · 28/04/2025 11:55

Not about the shower / don’t shower debate, but I have super fine hair that I used to wash every day, the result being constant greasy roots & fluffy ends. I can go every third day now between shampooing, I apply dry shampoo before bed & it’s like prevention instead of cure, up in a loose bun, the next morning just style as normal

This doesn’t work for me either! Tried every dry shampoo on the market.

Yep same here!
I have always washed my hair every day. I have a LOT of very fine hair.
As a student I once spent a whole summer washing every other day, to try and "train it" and all that happened was that every other day it was greasy and itchy!

whitewineandsun · 28/04/2025 11:59

Is this the new thing... People will now be judged for not showering twice a day? Ffs! 🙄

Judging people for how often (or not) they shower is not new on MN...

I shower in the morning. My bills are high enough already.

Your hair is greasy because you’ve stripped all the natural oils out. Hair isn’t meant to be washed everyday.

Not true, do you have a scientific source? I trust my dermatologist more than you - it’s fine to wash your hair everyday if you have greasy fine hair

also if you have androgenic alopecia it’s bad to not cleanse your scalp regularly as your leaving excess sebum which has DHT (contributes to further hair loss)

I can assure you there is some judgment from me but it’s for the person posting about a night shower.

andtheworldrollson · 28/04/2025 12:07

I just don’t get that filthy during the day ( I mean most of my body is covered in clothes for a start !). so I would rather not shower every day so that my skin and hair stays healthy

CodandChipz · 28/04/2025 12:11

i find showers relaxing so I always have them in the evening, mornings have never worked for me/woken me up.
I also help it helps with hayfever to change my clothes/shower in the evening.

DevnDwellr · 28/04/2025 12:26

@Utterlyincandescently I agree. In 48 years I’ve tried many times to see if I can get out of washing it every day and just feel greasy all day. My hair is washed, hair dried and often straightened every day and is really shiny, great condition and I rarely get split ends. Everyone’s hair is different. Would rather have that faff than feel like a greaseball 😆

Somewhatgreen · 28/04/2025 12:28

Glad I’ve read this.
Im new here & not having to look @ similar again will poss save me tablet time!
Thanks.

Your hair is greasy because you’ve stripped all the natural oils out. Hair isn’t meant to be washed everyday.

Said by someone who no doubt doesn't have thin greasy fine hair. In lockdown I tried training my hair to not be washed everyday. Literally tried periods of days and then weeks not washing and it was never not greasy.

My hair if very fine and has to be washed everyday or it looks greasy. As a previous poster said they only time i could go a couple of days between washes was when i was heavily pregnant.

When i was in my 20's i was trying to train my hair by only washing it every other day as i had small kids and it was a pain washing it every morning as back then we didnt have a shower.

On one of the days i didnt wash it i went into the chippie to get something for the kids, this was around 6pm. The man who worked there was having banter with the customers and looked at me said "oh you women, fancy coming out to the chippie with wet hair, didnt you have time to dry it", it wasnt wet it was bloody greasy, i didnt think it looked that bad but it must have been 😩

Never tried to train my hair again, always washed it daily from then on. Still cringe at that incident over 20 years later.

SipandClean · 28/04/2025 12:34

Waste of water and energy to shower twice a day. If you shower at night why on earth have another one in the morning.

Ashesof2046 · 28/04/2025 12:36

I only ever have a bath/shower at night before bed. I don't sweat much (anaemic and I run very cold), so I don't smell bad in the morning or anything. I love feeling all clean getting into bed too, so it works for me.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 28/04/2025 12:39

Another person posting to refute the greasy hair claim. If I didn’t wash my hair every other day I wouldn’t be fit to be seen in public and that’s with Dry Shampoo on Day 2.

Wishingplenty · 28/04/2025 12:49

I hate smug people that boast about the number of showers they have, especially if it is more than once a day. It is patronising and demeaning. If you live such a pampered life and that is your yard stick of worth, GOOD FOR SMUG OLD YOU! But leave the rest of us normal people in peace.

DinoLil · 28/04/2025 12:51

Do you change your bed linen and night clothes every day, OP? Otherwise you're going into bed clean, sweating all night, getting up smelly, and, literally, rinse and repeating.

Nominative · 28/04/2025 12:52

What on earth are you doing all day that you are marinading in grime at night? Showering twice a day is a horrendous waste of gas/electricity and water. Don't you feel any responsibility in terms of the climate?

To be fair, two short showers a day could have less impact on the environment than one longer one. One shower with a ridiculous power shower could be much worse for the environment than two with a basic electric shower.

I don't think two showers are particularly good for the skin, but you can't possibly know what her environmental impact is just because she showers twice.
