Watching it now. I'm not religious - but it is a fascinating watch and a beautiful setting.

There will be orders of service with translations surely?

Do you think Trump is getting this message about the Pope?

The booklets you can see people reading from will be the funeral order/mass order and will have been printed in several languages

Idroppedthescrewinthetuna · 26/04/2025 09:51

Melania looks squashed when Mr blue suit has loads of room. I would hate DP being that arrogant. At one point it looked like she was rearranging herself to be more comfortable

BrightOrangeDahlias · 26/04/2025 09:51

I'm watching the BBC coverage and the presenter talking over the priests with the translations is really grating on me. Subtitles would have been better, surely?

DeanElderberry · 26/04/2025 09:53

Even without translation, is Trump hearing 'refugees' and wondering . . .

Needtosoundoffandbreathe · 26/04/2025 09:53

Standard practice to speak the words. We've just been talking about it - Paris Olympics opening ceremony was done in the same way when it wasn't protocol given in English too.

Sky News are doing it as well. Same spoken word translation being transmitted, plus the same automated subtitle system. ('Ireland' for 'island', that kind of thing.)

Do you think Trump is looking at this and seeing if he can plan a "Biglier" funeral for when he goes?

He’s sizing up the Real Estate. First Greenland, next Vatican

RafaistheKingofClay · 26/04/2025 09:56

Trump getting the message would require some form of reflection & introspection. I doubt he’s even paying attention at this point.

DeanElderberry · 26/04/2025 09:56

I'm looking forward to reading the translation of this homily. Powerful stuff.

Trump can't afford the Vatican

I'm not a practising Anglican, but have been confirmed. There is no communion at an Anglican funeral. The funeral rites are typically at the crematorium or graveside after the church service which is a memorial of the deceased.

Anglicans can choose to have communion at a funeral.

Popquorn · 26/04/2025 09:57

“Build bridges not walls” sounds like a papal message straight to Trump.

DH is distracted by the fact he sounds like Richard Adowade…

True, but I haven't been to a funeral that included it.

RafaistheKingofClay · 26/04/2025 09:59

MAGA Catholics as a group couldn’t stand Pope Francis. They wanted someone much more conservative and disagreed with his stance on the death penalty, climate change and refugees. And him calling the USA out on all those things at various points.

MananaPenelope · 26/04/2025 09:59

I agree, the presenter speaking is annoying.

The papers were flapping about in the wind a lot. I’m sure the Vatican could have produced an appropriate leather binder .. like the one being used now.

I’ve just said exactly the same thing!

He really does! Maybe it is actually him.

Who was the woman who did a reading? (black dress with small flowers on it, American accent)

banivani · 26/04/2025 10:01

It’s nice to hear the exact songs we use ourselves in Mass - Catholic mass really is so universal and always recognisable wherever we go in the world!

Kielce Gussie of the Vatican Times

I can’t stop hearing Richard Aowade now. Thanks 😂
