Watching it now. I'm not religious - but it is a fascinating watch and a beautiful setting.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen a mantilla at mass. We do have a lot of African women who wear head wraps to mass.

The crowds applauded Zelensky when they saw him on the screens. Wonder if they did the same for Trump.

Your granny sounds amazing. Good on her. The nuns were a torment.

I haven't looked too closely but it didn't look too bright in the clip I saw but obviously depends on the lighting etc. I would have said his and prince William's looked similar on colour but one was an indoor shot and the other outdoors.

Speaking of William, why is he there instead of the UK king? It seems a bit disrespectful to send the second team rather than the boss man. It's not like he doesn't travel.

Prince William, who never met the late Pope, is representing his father in Rome in keeping with modern tradition and government advice. British monarchs rarely, if ever, attend international funerals.
In 2005, the then Prince of Wales, Prince Charles, attended the funeral of Pope John Paul II on behalf of Queen Elizabeth II. It meant his wedding to the then Camilla Parker-Bowles, was postponed with four days notice, moving from April 8 to April 9, because the original date of April 8 clashed with the funeral.

From The Times.

Trump just shook hands with the ushers.

They are very different colours.
The King is unwell - it’s common for him to be represented by the heir. Not sure if the King being the head of the CofE complicates matters too.

The extended man shake between trumpet and macron 🤣🤣

I suspect they bit their tongues in order not to boo.

banivani · 26/04/2025 10:22

IMO the mantilla has lost its place in catholic culture, and women who wear it now come across as showy, as if they want to be seen as pious more than being pious.

He's been traveling though. Wasn't he in Italy recently?

Re the colours, as I said, they looked the same to me but there was different lighting which would affect perception.

Well you shake hand with everyone around you so that’s fine really.

Fair enough. I think it's a bit disrespectful though. After all, they are both heads of a religion.

As someone has said, it’s very normal and he did it in place of the Queen last time.

Absolutely. I'm more Catholic than you.

This is adorable ❤️😂

In my church they moved over to the Indian sign of peace ie 🙏 during the pandemic. It seems to have stuck.

Radiat · 26/04/2025 10:26

I’ve only seen a woman covering her head once in the UK, and that was during Adoration, not mass. I think it’s more common in American converts than anyone else!

He did actually meet the Pope only a few weeks ago. I'm absolutely sure the Pope would not mind Charles not making the trip again considering he's still not fighting fit.

I'm no longer a practising catholic nor a royalist but I think William going instead is fine.

That’s fine. It would be stranger if he hadn’t and had just ignored them.

Yes, there's a resurgence of mantilla wearing among the more hardcore traditional-minded Catholics.

Same. I’m not sure whether I prefer it or not.

The person translating the Latin sounded like Richard Ayoade.

Absolutely. I'm more Catholic than you.

When I went to mass this Easter I noticed several people kneeling and taking communion by mouth. I asked a friend at church who goes all the time (a convert btw) and is au courant what that was all about and she rolled her eyes and said oh it’s soo pious. Soo pious. 😂

Yeah, I see it as either regressive or a fashion look.
