Watching it now. I'm not religious - but it is a fascinating watch and a beautiful setting.

FYI Trump watchers - this is the point that Trump combusts...
After Mass at St Peter's square the coffin will be brought to the Basilica of St Mary Major for burial.
A group of 40 people, including migrants, the incarcerated, homeless people and transgender people, will greet the late Pope Francis with white roses on the steps of the Basilica of St. Mary Major

Absolutely trump in a blue suit, especially aggravating after his attack on zelelensky for appropriate attire.

I think his suit is fine. The Irish Taoiseach, who is a practising Catholic, is also wearing a dark blue suit with a black tie. I don't think he possesses anything other than blue suits, although he usually wears a brighter tie.

I don't know what the norm is in Vatican city (I assume more formal) but catholic funerals don't have as strict a dress code as protestant ones seem to have.

DH is distracted by the fact he sounds like Richard Adowade…

Exactly what my DH said!!

Needtosoundoffandbreathe · 26/04/2025 10:05

I think Trump will probably say something highly inappropriate and possibly inflammatory shortly after this funeral.

RoseMarigoldViolet · 26/04/2025 10:06

Thank you. Interesting that she was chosen. And a good thing in such a largely traditional ceremony.

Popquorn · 26/04/2025 10:06

I am nostalgically remembering the smell of incense, which even for a Catholic as lapsed as I am, is a very nice memory.

SwedishEdith · 26/04/2025 10:07

I love the incense bit at funerals. I'd like to buy whatever it is Catholic churches use.

WeegieGrannie · 26/04/2025 10:09

Th red button on bbc used to broadcast events with no subtitles. Don’t know whether this is still available.

That's ruined it now 😂.

Prince george wore a blue suit to his grandmothers funeral.

A scoop of frankincense and myrrh, added to a disc of burning charcoal in the thurible!

Who's the man with sideburns? World leader?

They all need sunglasses really.

There are other people wearing blue suits but Trumps is brighter so he stands out more.

My one granny was a very devout Catholic the other was a proud Orange woman. My Orange granny would be scandalised if people weren't in "Sunday best" for church, my Catholic granny wouldn't care as long as they were at Mass. I do remember the nuns telling my mother off as my Holy Communion dress wasn't pure white, it was white with some pale pink flowers on it. Granny told them it wouldn't matter if I was in a dirty sack. Not often you see nuns told off, particularly in the 1950s.

Popquorn · 26/04/2025 10:13

I would love a wax melt with an incense nose.

He’s a child.
Trump’s suit is several shades lighter than anything else on show (for eg I saw William giving his respects inside St. Peter’s at the start and didn’t register his suit wasn’t black - though a PP says it’s not) - he knew it would be. Deliberate decision to draw attention to himself. It’s not a navy suit.

Lovely story! Your Granny sounds amazing ❤️

Milei, President of Argentina?

They both were in their own way but for a truly holy woman you'd have to look hard to find a better example than my Catholic granny.

QuiteUnbelievable · 26/04/2025 10:16

I think for me, trump's suit is glaring in light of his attack on zelelensky specifically on appropriate attire

SwedishEdith · 26/04/2025 10:17

My mum used to wear a mantilla to mass in the 70s. I used to be so embarrassed as they were really out of fashion then except for a few old women.

Yes, my dad (Catholic) used to say that only protestants dressed up to go to church.

Your granny sounds amazing. Good on her. The nuns were a torment.

I haven't looked too closely but it didn't look too bright in the clip I saw but obviously depends on the lighting etc. I would have said his and prince William's looked similar on colour but one was an indoor shot and the other outdoors.

Speaking of William, why is he there instead of the UK king? It seems a bit disrespectful to send the second team rather than the boss man. It's not like he doesn't travel.

Whattodowiththesewindows · 26/04/2025 10:20

Do popes normally attend world leader funerals ?
Otherwise I can't see why everyone is attending this current funeral.Unless of course they are Catholic and want to show respect .
What's the point of Trump attending other than to show off ,he certainly doesn't seem to share any of this pope's values.
It all seems so hypocritical ,such a waste of money .

QuiteUnbelievable · 26/04/2025 10:20

Prince William hasn't attacked a world leader for inappropriate attire
