Watching it now. I'm not religious - but it is a fascinating watch and a beautiful setting.

My best friend is training to be a deacon in Glastonbury Catholic church.
He said lots of women wear mantillas there.

The weather looks to have played its part today.

I've only been to one Catholic funeral - and I remember that it was long. And involved a lot of incense.

Mass would have been said with the funeral rites as part of the service hence the duration. I'm not sure but I think in non Catholic funerals you just get the funeral rites.

Hopefully practicing Christians will correct me kindly if I'm wrong.

Needtosoundoffandbreathe · 26/04/2025 09:35

He sounded nervous to me - there was a bit of cracking. He started pretty strongly. I know he had a mic, but it can be difficult outside not to oversing because what you can hear yourself is different.

banivani · 26/04/2025 09:35

I haven’t gone to church for years but went this Easter and was surprised to see several mantillas. Some sort of neo-conservatism clearly.

JoanOgden · 26/04/2025 09:35

They're lucky with the weather. What would they have done if rain was forecast?

Needtosoundoffandbreathe · 26/04/2025 09:37

I'm not a practising Anglican, but have been confirmed. There is no communion at an Anglican funeral. The funeral rites are typically at the crematorium or graveside after the church service which is a memorial of the deceased.

Amethystanddiamonds · 26/04/2025 09:39

Mantillas seem to be a lot more popular recently. I've started seeing a fair few at mass on a weekly basis. The mass for pope Francis last week had lots of women wearing them.

Who is the chap sitting down that they are genuflecting to?

Do you mean to get a blessing before reading the gospel? If a deacon is doing the gospel reading he always gets blessed by the ”main” priest, because normally the priest does the gospel reading.

I'd be amazed if they don't also have working plans for indoor ceremonies. Rome gets chilly enough in winter, and there's surely a Vatican equivalent of Operation London Bridge.

Marshtit · 26/04/2025 09:43

Trump seems to be sitting on his own

Who’s that fella, Ted?

Oh, I expect that’s a top priest, Dougal.

<Ted daydreams, a wistful look on his face about the many might-have-beens in his life, if only that money hadn’t been found resting in his account>

foreverblowingbubbless · 26/04/2025 09:43

I've been reading about all the paraphernalia that goes with him in the coffin. Everyday is a school day.

It's going to rain in Rome on Monday and then really heat up. Approx 21° sun/cloud today, they've been very lucky.

banivani · 26/04/2025 09:45

A lovely send-off all the same

Trump’s blue suit looks very out of place.

What a complete and utter oaf he is.

DeanElderberry · 26/04/2025 09:46

I'm torn on Mantillas - obviously, we don't have to cover our heads in church or anywhere else (except for H&S reasons), but they are pretty, and can be quite flattering - or at least useful cover-ups.

Watch the clip of him on Have I Got News For You last night - surreal, honestly.

DeanElderberry · 26/04/2025 09:47

Likewise all that blingy scarlet and gold the cardinals are wearing.

I looked up whether his body had been embalmed as open caskets aren't a UK thing.

banivani · 26/04/2025 09:47

Why is trump sitting on his own like that? Looks like he’s ”staff”.

cakeorwine · 26/04/2025 09:47

I presume there's no translation for the world leaders?

Needtosoundoffandbreathe · 26/04/2025 09:48

There will be orders of service with translations surely?

QuiteUnbelievable · 26/04/2025 09:49

Absolutely trump in a blue suit, especially aggravating after his attack on zelelensky for appropriate attire.
