Watching it now. I'm not religious - but it is a fascinating watch and a beautiful setting.

Us two, not religious but fascinating when we travel to go and see cathedrals monstrosities and such like .
Weird.. ha

Do you mean “monasteries", perhaps, although I have to say I agree that the word “monstrosities” can well be applied to a number of religious artefacts?

Ha. Good catch l do mean monastery. However I do get your point.
As a man of nearly 67 an bought up a Catholic and realised at the age of 11 ish it's a lie I still do like going into " buildings" so to speak.

He definitely is making a statement ..... 'look at me .....'

I’m not as convinced as others about this.

It’s not like he’s short of attention. People would look at him anyway because he was one of the most recognised and recognisable individuals there. Plus he’s a distinctive-looking guy in a blue suit or black, He’s knows he’s famous. He had a front row seat. He didn’t need to look to be noticed. I didn’t see him looking about to see who was looking at him or even trying to court attention.

I have no reason to defend the guy except … I just didn’t see anything so bad about the way he conducted himself. It’s reminding me of being back at school and whatever the unpopular girl wore to the class party, everyone would find fault.

Lots of them were on their phones. I saw some of the cardinals. I don’t think that’s good, but it wasn’t just Trump. He didn’t wear his cap. He even looked like he’d toned down his complexion. He did ok,

You're not really getting this, are you? 🤔

I don’t think it’s me that’s not getting it.
There was a dress code for people not in official uniform/vestments/whatever. It was black or sombre coloured suit and black tie. Trump wore a blue suit (not sombre) and a blue tie.
@Sunholidays thinks that if everyone is being mean to Trump about his suit they should be cross with the pall bearers too because their uniform was blue. I was wondering if she felt the same about the Cardinals being allowed to wear red.
It’s nonsense.

Their suits were blue. They looked great. Much softer under the sunshine.

I actually thought the pall bearers looked the best dressed there.

He didn’t originally have a front row seat. He somehow got it switched apparently from one a few rows back. Of course he’s all about the attention.

I wonder which Head of State it was supposed to be for.

cardibach · 27/04/2025 22:08

Someone who agreed to switch to avoid a scene I guess - someone who doesn’t think they are more important than the occasion. Pretty much any of them but Trump would fit that bill I reckon, @Calliopespa

I posted two photos up thread of the UK prince William and trump. Both suits were very similar in colour.

I think it's absolutely shocking that multiple people were on their phones. I was brought up catholic and am now an atheist so have no regard for the whole religious aspect but I really can't fathom them checking their phones. It's totally disrespectful.

Agree. It’s a societal illness.

Anyway, putting mine down for the night now! 🤣

Yes it is. I worry about the future and the loss of human interactions that have been replaced by digital ones.

Time to put mine down too😀

Seriously ? You think it is acceptable for a head of state to start chewing gum during a service ???

Lots of them were on their phones. I saw some of the cardinals. I don’t think that’s good, but it wasn’t just Trump. He didn’t wear his cap. He even looked like he’d toned down his complexion. He did ok,

You don't see the difference between taking a photograph before or after the service, to record the occasion, and scrolling through your phone during the service ???

CarpetKnees · 27/04/2025 23:27

OchonAgusOchonOh · 27/04/2025 18:35

Why on earth would they have focused on her attendance over any other head of state? British tabloid media might have but I doubt any of the rest would.

You are seriously underestimating the interest in the British Royal Family around the World.

I think you are seriously over estimating it.

When someone upthread mentioned your prince was also wearing a blue suit, I went to have a look and there were no photos of him that I could see in any of the Irish papers. I found one in the Belfast telegraph, a UK paper. He was in the video footage obviously but that was live footage.

Most reports that I saw had plenty of photos of Trump and Zalensky and obviously of the Irish representatives. Lots of photos of the pomp and ceremony and of the crowds.

I can't imagine your king would have gotten any more coverage than the prince did.

PumpkinsAndCoconuts · 28/04/2025 06:11

SharpOpalNewt · 26/04/2025 13:03

Oh right. Clearly every other world leader got it wrong then and Trump was the only one correct.

Or you know, the complete actual fucking opposite applies. 🤔

How is that even remotely close to what I said?

It’s Trump. He’s a fucking idiot (and worse). But a suit that might be two shades too bright is rather inconsequential imo.

and if he he did that on purpose / in an attempt to stand out (which @cardibach and many others have suggested), should we really be talking about it? Or are we simply giving him what he wants?

Trump’s suit truly doesn’t matter in the grand scheme of things.

That's really not true, there is about as much coverage of the UK Royal family alone as there is of all the others together in the German press (in general, not specifically this funeral), and that was also the true for any of the other countries that I lived in. There was never any question who was meant when someone said "the Queen". None of the other Royal families has a high profile show running for several seasons on Netflix either.

Yep. Same thing in Switzerland. “The” Queen was very popular and well known. Her presence absolutely would have been reported.
Prince William or Catherine would have been as well.

I’m admittedly not quitesure about King Charles. One hears less about that one.

OchonAgusOchonOh · 28/04/2025 08:35

Massive difference between presence being reported and detracting from the occasion.

@PumpkinsAndCoconuts if, as you say, William is so popular in Switzerland, did his presence at the funeral result in the press focusing on his attendance rather than the occasion? I know he was barely mentioned in the Irish press while other heads of state (trump and zalensky in particular) got plenty.

@Igneococcus getting more coverage than other royals is irrelevant. I'm referring to heads of state. I would expect at the moment trump is the head of state with most focus.

DH is distracted by the fact he sounds like Richard Adowade…

I kept thinking this too 😂 😂

Igneococcus · 28/04/2025 09:07

Yes, currently Trump is probably the head of state with the most importance and I have all my fingers crossed that his meeting with Zelensky will have done some good.
Germany's head of state was present, if you'd ask a random selection of people from all over the world to pick the current German head of state and the Prince of Wales, which one of them do you think, would win??

Snakebite61 · 28/04/2025 11:58

Popquorn · 26/04/2025 09:16

Trump’s blue suit looks very out of place.

What did you expect? He has no consideration for anyone.

Calliopespa · 28/04/2025 12:08

This thread has become pathetic - and really depressing.

It was a beautiful scene of representatives from all around the world coming together and sitting shoulder to shoulder in a truly magnificent location to pay their respects to a wonderful and extraordinary man. It was in every respect an acknowledgment and a demonstration of humanity at its best.

Even the weather was picture perfect.

Trump and Zelensky spoke peaceably in the basilica, in a shift from the disturbing scenes of their recent meeting.

And yet somehow people have managed to focus on the exact shade of Trump and William’s suit and have now descended into a childish tussle over which country’s representative was the “famousest.”

Talk about small-mindedness…

The power the Catholic church still has is clear with all the world leaders attending.

I am a Catholic and I must admit I was surprised at the amount of coverage Pope Francis's death had last Monday the day he died.
It was literally wall to wall on every media outlet.
I guess it's a worldwide religion, pretty much represented in every continent and we do have a world leader in the Vatican which is bathed in so many moments in history and intrigue.

Couldn't agree more.
Forget the colour of suits and ties, reflect on those who attended including people from every corner of the earth and the effect the simplicity of his coffin and his place of eternal rest had with the simple inscription.......Franciscus.
