Food you don’t often see anymore

BigJanette · 21/04/2025 11:48

What dishes did you used to eat, but don’t really see around anymore?

I’ve just remembered a M&S ready meal I ate quite regularly in my student days (this would’ve been in the mid 90s) but haven’t seen since.
Smoked haddock kedgeree.
Anyone else remember it?
I used to make it every so often, but haven’t done in years.
I think it’s time to remedy that and get it back on the menu.

Any easy recipes welcome!

Booths sell it, in dark blue sugar paper, like it used to be 😍

You’ve just brought back a really vivid memory. My mum used to buy the long spaghetti. I’d forgotten all about the blue paper - can still see it now, lying on the kitchen counter ready to go in the pan on Spag Bol night.

My DM used to make mushroom vol-au-vents from scratch for parties. It’s years since I had one.

M&S shortcrust pastry minced beef roll. If we went on a shopping trip to the nearest city, we always had that for tea. I don't eat meat now but reminisce with DH as it was a staple of both our childhoods.

They were all the rave back in the 80’s early 90s, I haven’t had them in years either

Vol au vents had their heyday in the 70s

Needtosoundoffandbreathe · 26/04/2025 21:43

Suet pastry - delicious on a meat and potato pie.
DP says corned beef hash. Actually corned beef is one I remember, didn't particularly like and wouldn't choose to eat now. I can taste it if I think about it.

Cauldron's tofu - it's all oddly shaped Tofoo now. Also, The Vegetarian Butcher's Little Willies. I loved them! 😁

Regularly make kedgeree it’s lovely!

We used to have faggots for dinner when we were kids growing up in the West Country (cheapo meatballs you would eat with mash and gravy) . Not sure they are allowed any more given the name.

Sometimes used to get a brand called Brains Faggots from the supermarket - blimey that sounds unappetising now. Loved them at the time….

My late DH loved them.

I remember this as well. Though DM would bought it in Asda. Did a chicken one too.

I know this isn’t really the question but still to this day I daydream about these items which have been discontinued

secret chocolate bar
golden cup chocolate bar
drifter
potato puffs
ready salted chipsticks

I’ve started many petitions and written various sternly worded emails to these companies but never had a reply.

Coffeeishot · 27/04/2025 08:19

I often think about Golden cups the large bars were a "treat " growing up so I'd savour it.

Unfortunately Burton's potato puff's will never be made again as the machinery used was scrapped.
Cheese and tomato and beef were my favourites.

Spam fritters....used to have them at school dinners, recall them being a bit greasy...

EcruCardigan · 27/04/2025 14:10

A bit???

Mickeychampionwhatgoodami · 27/04/2025 14:13

Remember pushing the fork down on the batter and watching cooking oil piss out of them.🤮

Cadburys Snack. Square shortbread biscuits covered in chocolate. I think there were six in a pack and I was quite capable of snarfing them all in one sitting !!

They still say these but only 2 in a packet now!!

EcruCardigan · 27/04/2025 18:51

@Mickeychampionwhatgoodami , I don't think I ever actually tasted it, but I remember the grease.

My favourite school dinner. Full of salty, greasy loveliness.

MissMarplesNiece · 27/04/2025 19:14

Does anyone remember the boxes of small chocolate cakes, covered in chocolate, that Cadbury used to make? From what I remember, there were 5 or 6 different ones in a box - a sort of cake selection box. And their chocolate covered sponge and Swiss Rolls? I haven't seen those for years.
