Food you don’t often see anymore

What dishes did you used to eat, but don’t really see around anymore?

I’ve just remembered a M&S ready meal I ate quite regularly in my student days (this would’ve been in the mid 90s) but haven’t seen since.
Smoked haddock kedgeree.
Anyone else remember it?
I used to make it every so often, but haven’t done in years.
I think it’s time to remedy that and get it back on the menu.

Any easy recipes welcome!

Ok @WhatdoesitmeanKeith , I will have a better look next time .

Rabbit stew
Brawn 🤢
Knuckle pie (made from pigs' knuckles 🤢)
Pheasant
Fray Bentos pies (I still see them around)
Chops (still available but pointless thing bit of meat stuck to a bone that you couldn't cut out)
Rice pudding with a dollop of jam (hated that crusty skin that formed on top)
Brisket
Ski yoghurts
Meat paste - used to love the chicken and ham one (doubt it had ever seen any chicken or ham!)

It's no wonder I'm veggie now! Just the outdated idea that you HAD to have meat with every meal! We were poor and thrifty I suppose and my father insisted on meat and whatever crappy cuts of it we could afford or stuff he'd could get free eg rabbits.

Comtesse · 14/05/2025 08:25

I like brisket - so tender!

Not something you don't see anymore but I saw something in Asda yesterday called 'Shito' -hot Ghanan pepper sauce. I expect it lives up to it's name but I'm definitely going to get some.

EcruCardigan · 14/05/2025 12:07

Tropical Sun Cock Flavoured Seasoning 100 grams : Amazon.co.uk: Grocery
You can still get this.

Wow, @CherryRipe1. Let’s all laugh at the funny name of some foreign muck that is bound to taste awful 🙄

EcruCardigan · 14/05/2025 16:12

@KnickerFolder , my Ghanaian friends eat fufu. It's a carb of some sort.

Those frozen mousses in recycling unfriendly plastic pots. Raspberry ripple and chocolate.

That reminds me of those pink foot shaped ice cream lollies my sister used to love. Not for me thanks! 😄

I made oxtail, white wine and rosemary pasta sauce this week.
It was delicious, I get the oxtail from the local butcher

Marrows.

For @Hastentoadd you do get vol au vents in France - I saw some stuffed with creamy mushrooms in a bakery a few days ago.

Plus I love making prawn cocktail - nice little prawns, some mayo/ ketchup, herbs, lettuce etc - still lovely!

@Comtesse
Oh how I miss thé vol au vent in the Charcuterie, ours did all sorts of fillings. They were especially nice warmed up for a few minutes so the filling was more oozy. LeClerc sold un filled ones on the bakery section, so you could cheat at dinner parties….

Gooseberries, where are all the gooseberries?

Waitrose usually have them in season, but they are easy to grow.

oncemoreuntothebeachdearfriends · 15/05/2025 16:01

OT, but what I don't see any more are butchers & fishmongers.
There are frequently posts that say "l get it from my local butcher".

I wish I could!

Chill.
Doubt she meant it will taste that way, more of an after effect (logical assumption after saying she will definitely get some...).

Plenty cross language fun names of foods around. Many of us have a giggle sometimes.

More casual racism. Don’t tell me I shouldn’t be offended.

I have a sense of humour. Unfortunate names that mean something rude in another language are funny. Suggesting that Ghanaian food is shit (or will give you the shits) is not cool.

The poster could have apologised or asked for her post to be deleted and rewritten it in a less offensive way if she was making a joke about spicy food, as you seem to think.

I just bought oxtail on Tuesday from my local butcher and am to look at my books for a recipe.

It's a running joke about many chili sauces! Some even make it their marketing

KnickerFolder · 15/05/2025 18:24

Please stop telling me what I am allowed to find racist or offensive, @Aprilweather. Are you the kind of person who can’t understand why it is offensive to ask someone where their family came from originally?

Wouldn't have to tell you, if you knew basic thing like people joking about chili making them...
It had nothing to do with Ghanaian food being like that but with chili. As in spicy chili sauce.
And it was alao quite clear (well to any chili fan at least).
So again. Chil

What has that to do with this ? The name of the pepper sauce was Shito. Doesn’t matter where it came from, the fact that it was Ghanaian is irrelevant aside from the fact that a lot of hot pepper sauces on the market come from this region. It’s a hot pepper sauce, and traditionally they can give you the shits. Hence the amusement in the name Shito. Why are you pretzeling yourself to find racism in it ?

Aprilweather · 15/05/2025 18:59

Sorry for ruining thread. Accept at least somewhat accurate fun fact about chilies as apology.

Birds don't feel the burn of the chili unlike others. Many chilies are colourful on purpose to attract birds so they eat them (they eat them whole). Chilies speed up digestion which is their way to make sure seeds pass through birds quickly, withou being digested, and spread around so they grow 😁 That speeding up works on everyone. We literally enjoy chilies for their painful self defence mechanism - Capsaicin
Hence chili - pooping jokes

Unbelievable. Nobody gets to “tell” another person what they are allowed to find offensive or racist.

@kwetuthats my go to food when my Crohn’s is bad. Nice parsley boil in the bag fish. Have loads in the freezer :) sorry!

I like them too but they are a quarter of the size they were when I was a child so we have to have 2 bags each. Then there is too much sauce....

chaosmaker · 16/05/2025 23:42

Funny Foot were the pink ice cream things

Redkatagain · 17/05/2025 06:55
