Food you don’t often see anymore

BigJanette · 21/04/2025 11:48

What dishes did you used to eat, but don’t really see around anymore?

I’ve just remembered a M&S ready meal I ate quite regularly in my student days (this would’ve been in the mid 90s) but haven’t seen since.
Smoked haddock kedgeree.
Anyone else remember it?
I used to make it every so often, but haven’t done in years.
I think it’s time to remedy that and get it back on the menu.

Any easy recipes welcome!

I miss Thornton's Continental Apricot Parfait, Cherry Truffles and their Summer Collection. They were all heavenly. The boxes in the supermarkets now are almost all dark chocolate and praline - boring!

Ydnil · 27/04/2025 19:47

Yes but I loved it, especially the blackcurrant flavour.

I’m in the north east and remember Greggs meat slices, little squares of mince pie which I used to have with beans and bread and butter for lunch when I came home from school.
I’d love to have another one of those but it’s probably 45 years since they discontinued them..

Oh I'd forgotten about those. They were really good🙂

They really were.. I occasionally wonder if I dreamt them as none of my friends can remember them. At least there’s two of us.. 😊

Cabana chocolate bar, my mum loved that.

Was Cabana the one with coconut and bits of fruit - a bit like a smaller Bounty ?

Lovelysausagedogscrumpy · 27/04/2025 22:02

Bath Oliver biscuits - fab with cheese. And does anyone remember the real, proper chop suey rolls from the chip shop ? They were huge, crispy on the outside and well filled. The bought in filo pastry ones in our local chippy are just not the same.

Bath Olivers

Missed this post and have posted the same thing. They were the perfect foil for good cheese.

I liked that you could go into a Thornton's shop and chose a selection of your favourites. Remember when they'd pipe a message on an Easter egg to personalise it?

Yes, and caramel too I think.

Cabana chocolate bar, my mum loved that.

I'm sure it tasted vaguely of rum - maybe I'm just imagining that.

I used to love the Lean Cuisine that was chicken in an orange sauce that came with rice (I think there was some wild rice in there as well). Of course, being Lean Cuisine, there wasn't very much of it!

I loved this too!

I know this is food you don’t see often and not just a list of ‘discontinued foods’ but given most PPs are the latter I’d like to add my long lost love; White Wine and Mushroom Pasta ‘n’ Sauce

God it was lovely. Although Google reveals to me that Bachelors have just issued a limited edition Prosecco and mushroom. Ye gads!!

Does anyone remember the cheese pie we used to get in school ? It was shortcrust pastry on the bottom and this intensely cheesy mix topping. I’ve seen various recipes supposedly recreating it but none have come close to the original I remember - they’re all just a version of quiche, which this definitely wasn’t. It was about the only school dinner outside of fish chips and mushy peas on a Friday that I really loved.

Edited

I started following a Facebook pages called ‘council Cuisines’ (yes I know) which frequently has posts from people who have tried to make this and the recipe. Most seem successful. I think it’s the deepness of the tin as I seem to remember school Cheese Pie was about two inches thick which should give it that flobbery creaminess

HoraceCope · 28/04/2025 06:57

CherryRipe1 · 28/04/2025 08:17

Friend of a friend ate 3 Spud-u-like in one sitting at the Hammersmith branch.

Those cracker selections that go on sale around Christmas usually contain a couple of Digestive biscuits. I love them with cheese, DH looks on horrified.

But of course they're for cheese sweet and salty go well together.

Buy your DH the Hovis loaf shaped digestives from the savoury biscuits section to educate him!

Ovaltine chocolate - as in a bar of chocolate, not the powder you add to milk. Came in an orange wrapper with a picture of lady holding a basket of grain. This would have been mid 1980s. God it was good.

Sounds like the Milo bars we used to have here in Australia 😊 I love the powder Ovaltine I wish they still sold ovalteenies the little tablet looking things

Agree. They’ve probably gone to live with the apples that actually taste of anything much.

Can you get Kanzi apples? They are lovely - tart but sweet and juicy. A Braeburn-Gala hybrid.

Ooh! I’ll try them.

The little brown Hovis rolls that were shaped like a Hovis loaf. Loved those with cheese.
