Food you don’t often see anymore

1000 replies

BigJanette · 21/04/2025 11:48

What dishes did you used to eat, but don’t really see around anymore?

I’ve just remembered a M&S ready meal I ate quite regularly in my student days (this would’ve been in the mid 90s) but haven’t seen since.
Smoked haddock kedgeree.
Anyone else remember it?
I used to make it every so often, but haven’t done in years.
I think it’s time to remedy that and get it back on the menu.

Any easy recipes welcome!

Brown sauce
Stew
Angel delight
Prawn cocktail
Volovants
Garabaldi biscuits

My DM used to make mushroom vol-au-vents from scratch for parties. It’s years since I had one.

Lardy cake is a west country thing I think, never really seen it in London. We always used to eat it with a thick layer of salted butter which is outrageous really…..

Ta! Interesting about the butter.

I'll eat butter with most things, including scones with jam and cream, which gets horrified looks sometimes. Never needed it with Lardy cake, oddly. Next time I see one, I shall try it. 😋

Was this a rip off of the famous 'tub of lard' which replaced Roy Hattersley in 'Have I Got News For You', last century?

Which oddly reminds me of Lardy Cake fom my youth. Wonderful stuff. Anyone else remember it? I haven't seen it on sale for many years.

Dh’s (long dead) granny used to make it - he’s often raved about it. If offered any now, though, I suspect he’d pass - mindful of his cholesterol!

They were all the rave back in the 80’s early 90s, I haven’t had them in years either

Is all the rave a saying, I've only ever heard all the rage, or did you eat them at 90s raves?

Suet steak puddings I've not seen one in years even our chip shops stopped doing them

I make a large on in the slow cooker.

@CrystalSingerFan I'm in Wolverhampton, lardy cake is still on offer around here.

I do. On my journey home by bus there was a vending machine (one of the old fashioned ones quite small on the wall outside a shop, not one of the huge modern things) that sold Bar 6. It was my treat when I was on my way home while I waited for the bus.

Do you also remember those small packets of chocolate covered shortbread biscuits that Cadbury used to make? There were 4 or 6 (can't quite remember) in a packet.

They still sell those but with only 2 in each packet

Wolverhampton, here I come! Thanks.

PS, love a suet pudding. Or suet dumplings...

Those machines could be got at
Buy one bar then use a pen either side to pull the other bars down by taking the paid for drawer half way out.

Blue Nun - I forgot about it! A staple of many a student party at the time.
Still love Angel Delight but only butterscotch flavour. Consume it in secret as apparently it’s beyond contempt.
But never liked those fish in a bag in parsley or butter sauce. It was fiddly to get out on a plate and fish was always rubbery and dreadful. Still, had them as it was a quick, cheap emergency food. But there was another type of ready made fish - sold in frozen section in carton boxes containing two pieces, not battered. They were sort of pre-grilled with chargrill lines and pleasant smokey flavour (I’m sure artificial..) when cooked (done quickly in a microwave). Used to get them from Kwik Save in the 90. Does anyone remember/ recognise those?

B&M did a six pack of 3 bacon fries and 3 scampi fries

B&M or Home bargains is great for food lost in time, they must buy surplus stock or something

All the rave is indeed a saying, means the same thing as all the rage though

LuckyManifestations · 25/04/2025 22:57

Morrisons and Sainsburys still sell frozen vol au vonce cases.
I regularly buy them to cook while on camping trips with lots of different fillings - tinned chicken, tinned creamed mushrooms, tinned salmon, cottage cheese etc

DH wants to know why they stopped selling McD's Root beer?

I can’t imagine root beer being very popular here. It’s very much an acquired taste for Brits and one that I, and many others, find utterly disgusting. It tastes like liquid Germolene.

ThePineappleSeahorse · 26/04/2025 06:51

McDonald’s answered that question.

“We stopped selling root beer some time ago as it didn't prove popular with customers in the U.K.”

You never see egg mayo starters or black Forrest gateaux at restaurants anymore

Very long spaghetti! Not the stuff that’s like 30cm long, more like 50-60cm. Where has that gone?

Booths sell it, in dark blue sugar paper, like it used to be 😍

HoraceCope · 26/04/2025 19:48

i very nearly bought a black forest gateau when i saw it in the tesco freezer section.
i resisted and bought a tiramisu and i will ask dh to make the gateau as i am sure it will taste far nicer than a tesco offering!

Cadburys Snack. Square shortbread biscuits covered in chocolate. I think there were six in a pack and I was quite capable of snarfing them all in one sitting !!
