Food you don’t often see anymore

What dishes did you used to eat, but don’t really see around anymore?

I’ve just remembered a M&S ready meal I ate quite regularly in my student days (this would’ve been in the mid 90s) but haven’t seen since.
Smoked haddock kedgeree.
Anyone else remember it?
I used to make it every so often, but haven’t done in years.
I think it’s time to remedy that and get it back on the menu.

Any easy recipes welcome!

Ready salted chipsticks-gone!?!
They will explain why I've only ever found salt and vingear ones when raiding the kids crisps selections.
The plain ones where the best!
I remember puffs now you have said it. Liked those too

Morrisons sell their own brand ready salted chipsticks.

Oh why oh why did I catch up with this thread on a Sunday, now I’m hungry for chip sticks and unfathomably, angel delight 😳 but shops not open till 10 😜

Ooh @BigJanette , I saw those necklaces in a wee ice cream shop in Pitlochry recently.

I was a child in the 60s & 70s & remember that when flavoured yoghurt first became popular most brands/supermarkets had orange flavoured yoghurts. It was usually just orange or strawberry flavours as standard. I haven’t seen a lot of orange flavoured yoghurts lately. I’m sure some brands still make that flavour, but it’s certainly not as prevalent as it was then. Also nut-flavoured yoghurts. My favourites were hazelnut or Brazil nut, although I never understood why they put so much sugar in them.

M&S also used to do battered chicken fingers, as an early foray into ready-made food. They were the size of children’s fingers & the chicken was breast fillet. As a greedy little girl I loved them.

EcruCardigan · 22/05/2025 09:47

I remember Ski yoghurt in the 1970s. There was also a set yoghurt and I used to like it. The flavours were chocolate or strawberry, I think. I don't remember them having the slightly sour tang that natural yoghurt has, so they were probably heavily sweetened and thickened.

From the 1970s, I remember Slimcea and Nimble bread and Energen crispread being advertised on telly. The models were slim, female and glamorous.
I can't remember the year, but I remember diet drinks like 1-Cal being advertised.
It seemed to glamourise dieting and it was obviously geared towards women.

Moonlightdust · 22/05/2025 09:49

Coronation chicken and deviled eggs!

HappySheldon · 22/05/2025 10:23

I do a variation on devilled eggs alot. Was a staple of my late 70s childhood and I often make a big batch and put in the fridge for snacking.

When feeling very luxe I top with caviar for parties etc.

BigJanette · 22/05/2025 10:42

@AnneKipankitoo ooh did you buy any?

@cheapskatemum and @EcruCardigan
We were probably eating 6 spoons of sugar per pot of Yoghurt 😅
I had forgotten about the nut flavours!
Those were the days.
But somehow, we seemed a lot healthier and people were definitely slimmer back then 🤔

Ski pineapple yoghurt was the only one I liked.

I still wish they'd bring them back.

EcruCardigan · 22/05/2025 11:27

@BigJanette , salt and sugar weren't considered bad for you back then.
I still don't think they are, but aspartame can FOTTOSOF. That stuff is vile.

I don't each much UPF, don't have a sweet tooth and rarely add salt to my food, so it's not an issue IYSWIM.

AnneKipankitoo · 22/05/2025 14:11

I did not @BigJanette . I was not a fan of them.

sashh · 23/05/2025 06:02

@Yerroblemom1923 There is a minor tourist industry in Fray Bentos (Town in Uruguay) with British people going to look at the original factory.

Comtesse · 23/05/2025 10:23

I love devilled eggs @HappySheldon - I think Americans make them more often that Brits. Mmm so good, might make some this weekend…..

andtheworldrollson · 23/05/2025 10:31

I don’t think we got yoghurt every day though ? They were a treat

andtheworldrollson · 23/05/2025 10:32

Still miss tootie fruities

modelmonday · 23/05/2025 11:12

St Ivel used to make yoghurt and this spread called Gold. The yoghurts had a “French” set version which were a bit starchy. I also remember Sainsbury’s own brand yoghurts having hazelnut and also toffee ones in the pack of 4.

Crikeyalmighty · 23/05/2025 13:25

One thing I really miss is M&S deltas - and they used to do a lovely gooseberry fool

St Ivel Gold was disgusting. Mum said it was like engine grease.

Remember the advert for one of those breads, Nimble I think, with a hot air baboon.

AnneKipankitoo · 23/05/2025 15:02

Balloon … a hot air baboon does sound more memorable and fun @Bromptotoo

Bromptotoo · 23/05/2025 15:07

@AnneKipankitoo bloody spellcheck.

I'll leave it for posterity!!
