Food you don’t often see anymore

What dishes did you used to eat, but don’t really see around anymore?

I’ve just remembered a M&S ready meal I ate quite regularly in my student days (this would’ve been in the mid 90s) but haven’t seen since.
Smoked haddock kedgeree.
Anyone else remember it?
I used to make it every so often, but haven’t done in years.
I think it’s time to remedy that and get it back on the menu.

Any easy recipes welcome!

Brown sauce
Stew
Angel delight
Prawn cocktail
Volovants
Garabaldi biscuits

By brown sauce do you mean HP or a generic one? You can get both in supermarkets if you're missing it, also all the others in my Tesco apart from stew, I assume you mean home made. Is that different to a slow cooker dish?

@TheHistorian I think the Spam is mainly for anglers to buy as it’s a good fish bait (poor fish)

Those round flat chocolate cornflake cakes-you used to be able to buy milk and dark chocolate versions.

Comtesse · 21/04/2025 12:34

For @Hastentoadd you do get vol au vents in France - I saw some stuffed with creamy mushrooms in a bakery a few days ago.

Plus I love making prawn cocktail - nice little prawns, some mayo/ ketchup, herbs, lettuce etc - still lovely!

TrickyD · 21/04/2025 12:35

Green’s Carmelle. A dead ringer for real vanilla
egg custard. Maybe it’s still around.

Milky Way crispy rolls! Bring them back.

They have been brought back this year!!! Have been spotted in Iceland

BigJanette · 21/04/2025 12:36

@nocoolnamesleft I don't drink or smoke, so I spent all my money on good food - I still do!

@Comtesse my little ones would love the really long spaghetti!

@ChompandaGrazia thanks! Will add to my order, along with the kedgeree ingredients 😁

I love a Prawn cocktail; often have it.

Waitrose and Tesco Finest do a smoked haddock kedgeree…

NeilDiamondsBlowDry · 21/04/2025 12:37

You Can get ready made prawn cocktails still, but they aren’t so popular on restaurant menus anymore as considered retro food, but people must still love them

My kids agree

Love kedgeree and use an easy recipe on BBC good food.. also make it with salmon

Brown sauce
Stew
Angel delight
Prawn cocktail
Volovants
Garabaldi biscuits

I make prawn cocktails regularly 😆. And until very recently I always had some angel delight in the cupboard for my daughter. I also make stews very regularly for my husband, and liver and onions. I even bought some faggots last year. 😆

I remember the M&S kedgeree - it was one of my favourites but I’ve not seen it for many many years. The kedgeree I’ve made never tasted the same.

Brown sauce? It's still very much around. We get through quite a lot of it in this house.

JusRoll vol au vents were excellent. I used to get the cocktail sized ones for Christmas and parties but they suddenly became unavailable, only the larger sizes appeared. I actually rang JusRoll, kind lady investigated and said they now only supply the cocktail size to big discount places like Costco. No longer to Tesco, Iceland etc. Disappointing.

My dad used to cook sweetbreads and chitterlings... Oh and tripe!

TheOtherAgentJohnson · 21/04/2025 12:41

Semolina pudding. We had this all the time when I was a kid, with a bit of raspberry jam in the middle.

Jacket potato places. I love a nice jacket spud.

You get the trucks now they even go viral which is a bit ott for a potato 😀

sixtyandfabulousofcourse · 21/04/2025 12:45

Sandwiches which had a filling of either that Heinz Sandwich spread which was so acidic, paste from those little jars, including bloater, chicken, beef and several more I cant remember, or a dentists nightmare golden syrup sandwiches
also remember Instant Whip. Vesta meals. I also remember buying a frozen ready meal it was a sort of vegetable pie creamy not bad cheap as I was on low income then,

squashyhat · 21/04/2025 12:45

A butcher in my MIL's town sells oxtail. DH made a casserole with it. Tasty but a very high bone to meat ratio.

Coffeeishot · 21/04/2025 12:47

Suet steak puddings I've not seen one in years even our chip shops stopped doing them

I have never drunk or smoked. Still couldn’t afford M&S as a student.

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 21/04/2025 12:49

Gammon with egg or pineapple and chips. It was my staple when going out to eat for a pub lunch (I was pretty fussy and unadventurous when younger). I know that you can still get it, but I can’t remember the last time I saw it on a menu!

as a child - those crispy pancake things. Birds Eye? They were vile. But a regular on our 70s/80s convenience food rotation when I was growing up.

RubiesAndRaindrops · 21/04/2025 12:49

We used to have tutti frutti ice cream as a kid. I haven't seen it for years you've got me thinking now!

devildeepbluesea · 21/04/2025 12:51

I love Brains faggots, they’re my guilty pleasure.

I made corned beef hash for DD and DNephew a while back. It went down a storm.

I never see Findus Crispy Pancakes any more. I wasn’t keen on them in the 80s.
