Food you don’t often see anymore

BigJanette · 21/04/2025 11:48

What dishes did you used to eat, but don’t really see around anymore?

I’ve just remembered a M&S ready meal I ate quite regularly in my student days (this would’ve been in the mid 90s) but haven’t seen since.
Smoked haddock kedgeree.
Anyone else remember it?
I used to make it every so often, but haven’t done in years.
I think it’s time to remedy that and get it back on the menu.

Any easy recipes welcome!

Ocado has Tivall products. My local Waitrose stocks them too. Google says Asda, Tesco and Morrisons stock them, @MissMarplesNiece. I guess it depends whether there is a large local Jewish community where you live whether a branch stocks them. There are so many other vegan/vegetarian brands now that I guess fewer people buy them unless they specifically want kosher food.

Brown sauce
Stew
Angel delight
Prawn cocktail
Volovants
Garabaldi biscuits

All still available at my local supermarket!

I know they are all still available but they are not as popular as they once were, you would rarely see prawn cocktail / vol au vents on a menu these days for example, whereas back in the 80’s / early 90’d they were very popular

This thread has me really craving a chicken and mushroom vol au vent and a slice of black forest gateaux. Probably with a glass of blue nun or bulls blood!!

TonTonMacoute · 24/04/2025 19:23

I saw a packet of frozen JusRol vol au vent cases in Tesco this week!

HoraceCope · 24/04/2025 20:02

i love a black forest gateaux - had a black forest gateaux style cake slice at Costa coffee once, delicious

i have just checked and you can buy black forest gateau in both tesco and asda

It will be probably in the kosher section, @Auburngal. Telma is an Israeli brand. Tivall is another kosher brand, for whoever was looking for Tivall Kievs, although I think they are owned by Nestle now.

Don’t have large Jewish communities in Leicester.

EcruCardigan · 24/04/2025 21:09

I'm somewhere with no noticeable Jewish community, but a nearby town has a synagogue. I'd imagine Leicester to be good for halal foods.

BigJanette · 24/04/2025 21:27

A tin of Spam has just featured on Celebrity BB 😂

They’ll be having vol-au-vents and Black Forest gateau next!

Was this a rip off of the famous 'tub of lard' which replaced Roy Hattersley in 'Have I Got News For You', last century?

Which oddly reminds me of Lardy Cake fom my youth. Wonderful stuff. Anyone else remember it? I haven't seen it on sale for many years.

FalseSpring · 24/04/2025 21:40

I regularly make my own kedgeree as it's one of my favourite meals.

I do really miss the little punnets of mustard and cress and also Waitrose used to do growing lettuce that would last for ages but not seen that for a while.

Not seen around recently and don't miss it other than for nostalgic reasons:
Tongue
Blancmange or Angel Delight - yuk!

Edited to add that I loved school cheese pie - surely someone must know the recipe! I would love to be able to recreate it.

DisabledDemon · 24/04/2025 21:55

I used to love the Lean Cuisine that was chicken in an orange sauce that came with rice (I think there was some wild rice in there as well). Of course, being Lean Cuisine, there wasn't very much of it!

Prawn cocktails have made a comeback in recent years and I'm pleased to add that they are on the menus at two very nice local restaurants. Haven't had a vol-au-vent for years but would love to see them making a comeback. They were delicious 😋

HoraceCope · 25/04/2025 04:10

i buy mustard and cress, or cress, most weeks, for my egg sandwiches @FalseSpring

Anyone remember Cadburys Bar Six ?

I do. On my journey home by bus there was a vending machine (one of the old fashioned ones quite small on the wall outside a shop, not one of the huge modern things) that sold Bar 6. It was my treat when I was on my way home while I waited for the bus.

Do you also remember those small packets of chocolate covered shortbread biscuits that Cadbury used to make? There were 4 or 6 (can't quite remember) in a packet.

Almost every supermarket seems to sell Prawn Cocktail in a tub in their fishmonger section.

Why oh why did you remind me about cheese moments? I once bought a pub card full of them and scoffed them in a disgustingly short period of time. They were just that tiny bit marmite-y too. Gutted that they are another casualty of 'stuff that should still be made but crap stuff is made instead'

Lardy cake is a west country thing I think, never really seen it in London. We always used to eat it with a thick layer of salted butter which is outrageous really…..

Cadburys Snack. They still make them and they are delicious!

Plus - new idea - scampi fries!

Those very very ascerbic fishy crunchy things in a little lime green bag - used to have them as a kid and hadn’t seen them for like 30 years. Until last year where I saw them in the bar of a community theatre in some completely random place in West London. I was DELIGHTED to scoff them again!!
