I’m also against capital punishment.

I'm for whole life orders. I’m for segregation. I’m totally for keeping our valuable prison staff safe.

But I draw the line at death as punishment.

Rummly · 20/04/2025 16:47

Is there some confusion here about Easter and crucifixion?

But…assuming there have been threads about capital punishment (I haven’t seen any), this instinctive Tory is against: killing people under court sentence isn’t murder or necessarily unjust on the facts of any particular case, but it is always sordid and an admission of failure.

Happy Easter everyone.

Notonthestairs · 20/04/2025 17:28

No to hanging or witch burning or whatever else was suggested. Although it wouldn’t surprise me at all to read that a small subsection of MN would like to bring it back, preferably with a livestream at Tyburn or Tower of London for some Tudor cosplay.

Happy Easter 🐣

So am I.

I think some murderers would not be convicted, as some jurors would be unwilling to send a person to their death.

countrygirl99 · 20/04/2025 18:05

I would only consider capital punishment if the legal system was infallible and we've had plenty of proof that it isn't.

2dogsandabudgie · 20/04/2025 18:23

Zonder · 20/04/2025 16:40

Which protests? I've clearly managed to avoid the threads too!

The protests by Trans Rights Activists in London yesterday after the ruling by the Supreme Court that the legal definition of a woman is based on biological sex. Who would have thought it, at last some common sense.

7 statues including that of the suffragist leader Millicent Fawcett were sprayed with graffiti and some protestors were holding placards inciting violence against "terfs". Hope they are arrested.

And the police that have to pick up the pieces when it all goes wrong, too. 6 cars whizzed past me on the morning of that attack at Frankland prison (and goodness knows how many attended from other directions).

I don't support capital punishment but I'm all for some people living very bleak, unenriched existence with the bare minimum of contact with other humans. (and the prison service is another one that should never have been privatised. That started happening by stealth all the way back in the 80s)

Llttledrummergirl · 20/04/2025 23:41

Hard no on capital punishment from me too. One innocent person being sentenced to death is one too many, and we don't always get it right.

DuncinToffee · 21/04/2025 00:29

Another hard NO to the death penalty.

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 21/04/2025 06:36

I'm also completely opposed to capital punishment. Not just because of the risk of errors, but also because ethically I disagree with the concept of state sponsored executions.

BIossomtoes · 21/04/2025 10:05

I find the concept of capital punishment abhorrent. Killing people is just wrong whatever the context and capital punishment is illogical - we might as well punish rapists by raping them.

So JD Vance has done a Truss om the Pope

Killed the Pope. In the same way Truss did the Queen in.

I posted that before I saw your post on the Trump thread Rafa Easter Wink

I hadn’t seen yours here either. We’re all thinking it. 😂

Except some. MAGA on my Twitter who are having a serious sense of humour failure over it.

DuncinToffee · 21/04/2025 10:45

Even Larry the Cat thought it

On a more positive note, which government is responsible for increasing funding for rural bus services? I assume it’s the current one. But it’s nice to have a usable Sunday/BH bus service back again.

I’m no longer stuck here on Sundays. Next step a reasonably timed late night weekday service 😂

SerendipityJane · 21/04/2025 10:53

Did Vance really meet the Pope ? This could be one of the most dramatically revealed lies in history 😀

Meanwhile, I notice a local paper highlights a few local tax dodgers. As I have noted in a thread no one is talking about (because everyone wants to bash benefits) this tiny snapshot reveals over £10 million that could go into hospitals, schools, potholes.

Every Midlands tax dodger shamed by HMRC in brutal list

The tax authority publishes a list of those who owe large amounts in tax

Which Party is advocating for the return of the death penalty? I haven't seen anything about it.

It comes up now and again as a discussion, like on this thread.

Parties who want to take us out of the ECHR might be interested in restoring capital punishment?

Wow!
I had no idea HMRC could do this.

SerendipityJane · 21/04/2025 11:21

Luckily (?) for abolitionists, the UK justice system is guaranteed to throw up a horrific miscarriage of justice regularly enough that there's always a recent one to bat away calls for the return of capital punishment.

It's always struck me as a bit naive to oppose the death penalty because of the risks of a miscarriage of justice. The very first action a bad faith dictatorship would take would be to declare their justice system infallible. My opposition comes from my conscience. You can't brush that off.

You will notice the tumbleweed on the thread I started on this.

You can bet your life it it promised the chance for posters to regale us with tales of "someone" they "know" who "gets thousands in benefits" then it would be half full by now.
