You'd imagine tax dodging would trigger stronger opinions, particularly given the sums involved.

Which Party is advocating for the return of the death penalty? I haven't seen anything about it.

No party (possibly Reform? IDK). But placards on the protest yesterday against the recent Supreme Court ruling suggested that gender critical feminists should be hanged. This is not an unusual sentiment from such people and is often accompanied by other unpleasant ideas, such as that they should be raped or burned to death in a “grease fire”. It seems to escape the notice of the authorities every time.

JK Rowling has been a frequent target of such threats.

Not really when you consider that most of the people most vocal about “benefit scroungers” are the same group who are eager to find ways to avoid inheritance tax and care home fees.

There is a very good joke there about a transwoman being bloody well hung.

Notonthestairs · 21/04/2025 12:08

I think Lee Anderson might have been vocally in favour of death penalty. I have no idea whether that reflects the wider Reform party.

I believe incitement to violence (against an individual or specified groups of people) should be investigated and prosecuted. Threats of violence have no place in at protests. When I used Twitter I seem to remember similar threats being thrown around quite freely.

Well it takes imagination because it certainly doesn't happen in reality.

You mean cunts.

RafaistheKingofClay · 21/04/2025 12:14

I think all 3 iterations of Farage’s party have had the death penalty as a policy. It polls very well with their target audience.

The protests by Trans Rights Activists in London yesterday after the ruling by the Supreme Court that the legal definition of a woman is based on biological sex. Who would have thought it, at last some common sense.

7 statues including that of the suffragist leader Millicent Fawcett were sprayed with graffiti and some protestors were holding placards inciting violence against "terfs". Hope they are arrested.

You’ll find that this thread, true to its name, is very Starmer-esque.

Therefore we find here that everyone seems to be ignoring the monumentos Supreme Court ruling, like the PM himself is doing.

Fair enough, it’s only a corner of a corner on the www. But just thought I’d update you, in case you were flummoxed at the sound of silence.

DuncinToffee · 21/04/2025 15:23

Yvetter Cooper and Bridget Phillipson both have openly condemned the vandalising of the statues

And Starmer, has he said anything?

Though not the threats - never a mention. Presumably they condone them, because they certainly haven’t condemned them.

I’ll go back to lurking now. On the whole, I think this government is doing a decent job, or trying to, in very difficult circumstances. It couldn’t possibly be worse than the previous lot, though.

Yvette Cooper the Home Secretary will have spoken on his behalf.

Have you got a link? I looked at Reform's 2025 manifesto and there was nothing about the death penalty just longer sentences.

A bit of a jump to conclude that they presumably condone them Confused

The Met confirmed it is also dealing with a number of complaints from the public about signs and images shared on social media that were reportedly displayed at the protest yesterday and "action will be taken if there are signs displayed that breach of the law".

The Met. Right.

I won’t hold my breath.

Who else could deal with it?

I don't have much faith in the Met either but that is a different matter.

Delurking to say there are reasons why we don't discuss those issues on these threads. There are plenty of other threads on the rest of MN to do so.

PandoraSoxx · 21/04/2025 15:50

And just for the record, I think it is unacceptable to threaten violence towards women for their views.

2dogsandabudgie · 21/04/2025 15:51

DuncinToffee · 21/04/2025 15:38

Are you sure, did she actually say she was speaking on his behalf, why can't Starmer himself speak out about the vandalism and the placards inciting violence against women.

Are there any other issues you don't discuss on here or just the trans issues?

Piggywaspushed · 21/04/2025 15:53

But, also, I don't fully understand the legal and political implications of the ruling as regards the ECHR and the HRA and understand this could be problematical for Starmer's government, according to some on Twitter. My impression is that most people don't actually fully yet understand the ruling.

I don't like talking about that which I don't fully understand. The law is very complex so I am continuing to read and absorb.

As Pandora said there are other threads-many!- discussing the ruling.

Oh and Hi Pandora !

Exactly. Keir is keeping quiet because all the nonsense he and his cabinet colleagues have spouted on this is coming back to haunt them.

Notonthestairs · 21/04/2025 15:55

Farage and Tice called for a HoC debate regarding the death penalty.
UKIP wanted a referendum on the death penalty.
