The Bill to take control of British Steel has passed the Lords

It now awaits Royal Assent before becoming law

Frog face will probably claim the credit if it does happen.

As predicted:

"Reform UK’s leader, Nigel Farage, said Labour had acted on British Steel because they were “terrified” of his party in its traditional northern heartlands, reports the PA news agency."

@dontcallmelen sorry for your loss.

@bestiswest agree about Port Talbot

BIWI · 12/04/2025 18:04

Now approved by the King.

itsgettingweird · 12/04/2025 18:41

I didn’t watch any of the live stream.

I only heard the 4pm news on BBc that said it has made it through Lords and then played a snippet of a minister saying it was only having to don’t because it was labours fault steel had gone this way and it’s another thing they’ve destroyed. Seemed an odd choice of snippet for something that had passed and was clearly a load of propaganda crap rather than an actual political reason for being against it - which people have the right to have.

itsgettingweird · 12/04/2025 18:42

That was BBC R4 btw

BIossomtoes · 12/04/2025 18:42

Excellent. That’s what you call decisive government.

cardibach · 12/04/2025 19:40

Sorry for your loss @dontcallmelen

pointythings · 12/04/2025 20:58

I'm so sorry, @dontcallmelen . The Netherlands take a similarly speedy approach to funerals and it felt like a real rush job when my mum died - especially as I was having to coordinate things from here. It's tough and I hope you manage a proper goodbye nevertheless.

LlynTegid · 12/04/2025 22:02

Please respect frogs. Do not compare them with Mr Farage.

BIWI · 13/04/2025 00:19

Sorry - can’t read that as it’s behind a paywall!

MaybeNotBob · 13/04/2025 00:21

Really? It seems free to me. Anyway, here's the first bit;

British Steel shut North East site after Richard Tice's firm threatened rent hike
In recent days the Boston and Skegness MP has vocally called for the government to nationalise British Steel and save the firm's plant in Scunthorpe
British Steel slimmed down its operations in the North East after Reform UK's Richard Tice's company threatened to hike the rent on their facility.

PickAChew · 13/04/2025 00:25

It's just behind an impenetrable ad wall!

Karistyleaftea · 13/04/2025 09:17

Watching LK - what is the matter with her?
Has she not understood one iota of the seriousness of the Steel situation?
We are walking a hugely serious tightrope and she is trying to goad him.
She should not be doing this, in my opinion,

DuncinToffee · 13/04/2025 09:37

Trevor Phillips was the same on Sky

It’s all she knows. I have no idea why she’s still there, there are so many far better political journalists.

Same. She's a rubbish interviewer whoever she is talking to. I have no idea why she has her job. Maybe she's very cheap.

Trevor Phillips was the same on Sky

Was he asserting that the UKs closest geographical trading partner was the US ?

Karistyleaftea · 11/04/2025 19:30

@Rummly I disagree,
I do feel there absolutely is right wing media bias, very obvious indeed with the BBC in particular.
Have a look at QT or LK on a sunday,
I do sometimes have to stifle my own laughter when I watch Fiona Bruce's "sneery" face if she disagrees with what a Labour MP is saying.
And her constant interruptions, dear me!

Wasn't R4's Nick Robinson a Young Conservatives chair? i think he also had other roles in the Tory Party.

BTW, quick look at the rags the day after the economic growth figures and they didn't get a mention on the front pages in my local news stand... which is what i said would be the case....

Just because we have the Mirror, thats doesn't mitigate the Sun, Mail, Express, Telegraph, Times or the bias in some TV coverage.

BIWI · 13/04/2025 16:55

… but in The Guardian it was the lead article in the business section.

PandoraSox · 13/04/2025 18:01

Evening all. I am off for a while. The PIP threads have started up again, so I am taking a break from MN as I just can't stand it.

I will be back at some point, hopefully will be able to find you all. 😘

BIWI · 13/04/2025 18:05

Sorry to hear that @PandoraSox Flowers
