Ed Davey 👏

“Given the huge damage Trump's tariffs have done to the British steel industry... any member of this House that actively campaigned for [his] election and cheered him on has behaved shamefully and unpatriotically and should apologies to British steel workers.”

Ed Davey is really coming into his own currently.

So there wasnt a deal agreed with Jingye.
And Jingye want £1.2 billion from taxpayers money and we would have no control over how they then proceeded (or didnt)?

DuncinToffee · 12/04/2025 12:57

According to Griffith, Badenoch has been extremely clear that the deal was being negotiated and the point about a deal being negotiated is that deal would be concluded after the election.” Confused

(Badenoch was the business secretary doing the negotation)

Apologies accepted @LittleBowSheep and @cardibach !

Listening to this debate today reminds me again of every reason we needed to get the tories out.

Fuck, labour haven't done things the way I would have liked at times, but the petty spite and point scoring is pathetic. Anyone would think they had not had 14 fucking years to avoid this and they did jack shit.

Badenoch Can get to fuck with her clim that the deal she was negotiating would have been bigglier and stupendous if the tories hadn't called, and then lost an election that meant sadly it couldn't happen. I get the impression that she thinks nobody could have made a bigglier deal.

The tories have a fucking cheek using this for point scoring, instead of trying to find the best way forward. A waste of everyone's time, they need to grow up it's pathetic.

He’s a big bag of wind.

PandoraSox · 12/04/2025 14:04

Badenoch thinks everyone else is stupider than she is.

Wrong!

Shocked at the peaism going on here.

You are correct that we don’t actually need reminding that it wasn’t just Farage and Truss that welcomed Trump. Jenrick would have voted in favour of Trump and Badenoch described Trump as “a force for good in the world”. Given Trump didn’t hide his love of tariffs before the election they must have also believed they were a good idea. For whom I’m not certain.

DuncinToffee · 12/04/2025 14:45

The Steel Industry (Special Measures) Bill has passed through the Commons after just over 3 hours of debate and is now on its way to the Lords

I can't help but recall a housemates comment " .... and if my Da' had tits he'd be my Ma ....". An expression I was told was "a common phrase down our way" 😀

Llttledrummergirl · 12/04/2025 15:34

That took me back.

BestIsWest · 12/04/2025 15:47

While I applaud the Government’s action on British Steel, I do find it sad (and I’ve heard a few angry comments) that the same couldn’t have been done for Port Talbot.

I’m slightly shocked don’t mind peas but mushy peas or pease pudding a step to far.

Notonthestairs · 12/04/2025 16:09

Sorry to read that @dontcallmelen
Nobody wants to be dealing with Ryanair at a time of family loss. I hope all goes well.

itsgettingweird · 12/04/2025 16:13

Sorry to hear that dontcallmehelen. Glad you’ve got flights but I’m sure trying to sort all that whilst grieving Kay adds extra stress. Flowers

So sorry. We had the same a couple of years ago and it really adds to the stress.

I was so pleased to see Starmer’s gone to Scunthorpe this afternoon. Hopefully the passage through the Lords will be as smooth as it was through the Commons.
