Just noticed that awful film Mrs Harris goes to Paris is on TV I saw it at the cinema. Awful and the write up sounded so good. Hated Mama Mia and Barbie too.

Lost in Translation - sexist and racist and with a totally unbelievable main female character. Made even worse by people over the years lecturing me that it is 'supposed to be slow,' and making it I just don't get it. I do get it and it's shit.

Marley and Me - Just wrings far too much sentimentality out of it. When the dog first gets ill I felt tearful but 30 minutes later I was willing it to just die and my tears had completely dried up. Did they think he would live forever? Why do they encourage their children to see it was the end of the world? I say this as an animal lover who has grieved my pets when they have died. It totally put me off Owen Wilson too.

Oh, Marley and Me… yes! I love dogs- LOVE them (I have three), but I can’t stand that film!!

TheCourseOfTheRiverChanged · 30/03/2025 14:00

Agree about the misogyny of American Beauty - 2 hours inside the head of a tedious man-baby.
Danny (Donny?) Darko. There was something about how detached he was, I didn't care what happened to him, couldn't get invested.
And I can't remember if it's called "She", or "Her", but the one where the bloke who takes himself way too seriously has sex with his computer. I quit watching 15 minutes in and DH convinced me I was prematurely dismissive so I went back and watched to the end. TRUST YOUR INTUITION! is the only lesson to take away from that.

That airport one with Taron Egerton...Carry-On. Fucking tripe.

That was shite. I didn't even get to the end.

StressedQueen · 30/03/2025 14:14

I also hated Barbie. It was so surface level

MyKingdomForACat · 30/03/2025 14:21

It’s A Wonderful Life. Watched it for years and years before I realised how boring and drawn out the beginning is, how irritating the kids are and what a yawn the wife is

Davros · 30/03/2025 14:23

@WaffleParty imo this thread is not about production values

I have only skim read and mostly disagree. I love American Beauty and Lost in Translation.

…. but Titanic is a horror, and so so slow. I should have let at the half way point.…. my ex would have Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon. (I disagree)

stringbean · 30/03/2025 14:30

Titanic - 3 hours of my life I’ll never get back
As Good As It Gets - the Jack Nicholson character was so unlikeable I found the whole premise ridiculous
Moulin Rouge - just no
The Holiday - everyone in it was far too perfect and smug
Barbie - was expecting funny but it was just meh
Love Actually - Richard Curtis formulaic film
About Time - much as I liked Bill Nighy in this film I couldn’t get over the fact that his son - not bad-looking, nice guy, good career prospects - used the amazing gift he had to….get a girlfriend?! Too many holes in the plot.

stringbean · 30/03/2025 14:31

I love It’s a Wonderful Life - very much of it’s time, but the premise of touching others’ lives is true and very poignant.

Whoarethoseguys · 30/03/2025 14:33

I love Mrs Harris goes to Paris.and most of the films @stringbean quotes

BrokenLine · 30/03/2025 14:35

WaffleParty · 30/03/2025 13:21

It’s really not!
Maybe you didn’t like it, but you can’t deny the quality.

I don’t think it has any particular ‘quality’. It’s a perfectly standard prison film with a decent cast and a feelgood ending. It’s likeable and undemanding and about the strength of the human spirit, friendship, tenacity, yadda yadda. And Morgan Freeman’s voiceover.

Mostly, I think it was just on a heavy tv rotation in the pre-streaming days, and people got fond of it. Rather like It’s A Wonderful Life. It was in the public domain and got shown a lot.

stringbean · 30/03/2025 14:38

I’m gobsmacked that someone has mentioned When Harry Met Sally - genuinely my favourite ever film. Clever, witty, charming: the two leads have great chemistry and the backdrop of NYC through the seasons/years is beautiful. I know the script practically word for word.

unlikelywitch · 30/03/2025 14:38

Bridget Jones
Fight Club
Avatar
ET
Jurassic Park
Saving Private Ryan
Trainspotting

Anchorman and Elf - Will Ferrel gives me the boak

RedPanda901 · 30/03/2025 14:38

Oppenheimer - fell asleep
Love Actually - depressing

Lottapianos · 30/03/2025 14:39

'Moulin Rouge. Couldn’t get beyond the first 15 minutes and have never understood the hype.'

Same! Nearly walked out of the cinema

Agree about Shawshank Redemption and It's a Wonderful Life - overblown, naff, sentimental tripe. I don't get the love for either of them

More recently, Emilia Perez. Absolute dross. I watched it on Netflix, stuck it out for an hour then gave up but fast forwarded to the end to see how the story got wrapped up. So glad I didn't waste any more time on it. Zoe Saldana and Selena Gomez were very good but everything else was unbearable

Runningoutofpatiencefucksandmoney · 30/03/2025 14:44

Love Actually
Notting Hill
All the Star Wars
Officer and a Gentleman

TubeScreamer · 30/03/2025 14:44

Magpiecomplex · 30/03/2025 14:44

Avatar is the only one I actually couldn't sit through. Just soooo dull.

GellerYeller · 30/03/2025 14:46

Disaster and apocalypse films can get in the bin.
2012- meh.
War of the Worlds- meh with added Tom Cruise.
Independence Day- Will Smith punches an alien and who’d have thought it, the US President can fly an alien spacecraft. Just no.

womananddog · 30/03/2025 14:50

ThatsNotMyTeen · 30/03/2025 00:06

The Banshees of Inisherin. Utter, utter shite.

This - I had to turn it off

Hattie1970abc · 30/03/2025 14:52

Footloose.
Banshees of Inishiren.
Barbie actually made my blood boil. What the hell was all the hype about?
Any superhero films.
Any horror films.
A lot of Oscar winning films are dull.
Agree with Mamma Mia but for some reason love Mamma Mia2.

DirtyBird · 30/03/2025 15:04

Harry Potter… soooo boring I always fall asleep about 15 mins in

The Banshees of Inisherin. Utter, utter shite.

Agree.

ohnowwhatcanitbe · 30/03/2025 15:51

Happy Feet. Fucking grim. Anthropomorphism at its absolute worst.

The whole backstory was supposed to be about caring for the environment. But only, apparently, the cute animals who can entertain us.
