Gail’s warning

Teacaketravesty · 27/03/2025 16:10

My husband bought a tea and a hot cross bun in a Gail’s in central London yesterday, and they refused to toast it.

That’s it, that’s my PSA. Idk if it’s Gail-wide or if he was unlucky. I found some guff on their website about their HCBs being good enough not to toast but no actual confession. DH had no time to argue so just ate it: it was rubbish. I’d have asked for a swap for something that is meant to be eaten cold, but he is less good at sticking up for himself so had to live with the sadness.

Vipers, be warned.

I was obliged to eat an Aldi HCB with lots of butter when I got in from work after reading this

Crazybaby123 · 27/03/2025 19:03

False advertising. You had a cold cross bun, when you requested a hot cross bun.

Gumptionesque · 27/03/2025 19:11

Is this for fucking real?!

Untoasted is bad, but no butter is madness

My DH goes to Pink Lane as often as he can, for their gorgeous bread and their croissants (they have a sort of Bakewell tart filling and loads of almonds.) I will suggest he gets a couple of HCBs when he's next there.

You have to be early they sell out quickly 🥲

I never toast my hot cross buns, or bagels, nor do I use butter or marge.

Do you work in Gail’s morning goods policy unit?

I want a hot cross bun now but all I've got is crumpets.

Eat it dry and untoasted and pretend you're in Gail's.

Do you also eat kit kats without breaking them into sticks?

Schoolchoicesucks · 27/03/2025 19:25

People eat hot cross buns untoasted and without butter? What has become of the world.

2021x · 27/03/2025 19:25

So it was acturally a Cold Crossed Bun, if it was advertised as anything else that is just wrong.

Complain get some free buns!

Teacaketravesty · 27/03/2025 16:16

No butter offered

I would have cried... a dry cold crossed bun.... these are bad times.

Agapornis · 27/03/2025 19:28

There are warnings of Gail's in Cromarty, Tyne, Dogger, Fisher and German Bight.

Moderate or poor, occasionally very poor.

IsItSummerSoon · 27/03/2025 19:30

This happened to me yesterday! I was told that if they have recently come out of the oven, they don't toast them.

Which does seem to imply they only toast them if they're worried they've gone stale. Very odd.

I did get butter, but it was so cold I couldn't spread it on the cold bun. It was a sad experience.

Good for you....

Globules · 27/03/2025 19:40

Another reason to never use Gail's.

My first, and last, visit had me queuing for 13 minutes to be served.

I had two customers in front of me. One ordered 2 coffees. The other ordered a coffee and a croissant.

Your story does not surprise me @Teacaketravesty

OldCottageGreenhouse · 27/03/2025 19:45

I thought this was a misspelt thread title about weather!

Eminybob · 27/03/2025 19:48

I have never heard of an untoasted HCB!
I bloody love a good toasted bun with ladhings of butter.

Talk about a drip feed!!!
😱😱😱

I know. The not toasting is bad enough but THIS???

NadjaofAntipaxos · 27/03/2025 20:02

How do we feel about a hot cross bun with a bit of cheddar on it?
A colleague suggested it. At first I told them to shit off. But then I tried it and had a come to Jesus revelation.

lifeonmars100 · 27/03/2025 20:05

I toasted an M and S hot cross bun the other day, buttered it and then added some Aldi blackcurrant curd. It was heavenl. Now I am thinking about it and want one but have none in.

Eastie77Returns · 27/03/2025 20:07

I stood in Gails a couple of months ago and watched as the man in front of me bought a sandwich (£11 for a couple of pieces of bread with a single filling) to eat in and asked the lady serving him if she could please cut it in half. She refused. She said company policy meant she was not allowed to cut anything in half. The man turned to me with a look of utter bewilderment. I actually snorted with laughter.

@NadjaofAntipaxos I used to think cheese in a HCB was the work of the devil himself. Then I tried it. Haven't looked back since.

Fizbosshoes · 27/03/2025 20:41

Waitrose keep tricking me by putting lots of HCB in the reduced trolley....but on closer inspection they are always nasty flavours or wholemeal ones

cardibach · 27/03/2025 20:48

TennesseeStella · 27/03/2025 16:14

I'm with Gail's tbh, life is short and HCBs are just as nice cold.

They really aren’t.

Galatine · 27/03/2025 20:50

Never heard of Gail’s, must be a southern thing. It would never happen in Booths.
