Gail’s warning

Teacaketravesty · 27/03/2025 16:10

My husband bought a tea and a hot cross bun in a Gail’s in central London yesterday, and they refused to toast it.

That’s it, that’s my PSA. Idk if it’s Gail-wide or if he was unlucky. I found some guff on their website about their HCBs being good enough not to toast but no actual confession. DH had no time to argue so just ate it: it was rubbish. I’d have asked for a swap for something that is meant to be eaten cold, but he is less good at sticking up for himself so had to live with the sadness.

Vipers, be warned.

My favourite treat used to be a warm cinnamon bun from Starbucks. Then one day they refused to warm it, stating they weren’t allowed anymore because someone complained the frosting was too hot. Ruined it for everyone. They are just no where near as good cold.

We were never offered our cinnamon bun warm in the UK.
However the Starbucks in Bordeaux warmed the bun up without us asking and I now prefer mine cold.

GasPanic · 27/03/2025 16:38

Thank god for this warning or I could have suffered this terrible indignity, a non toasted hot cross bun.

lcakethereforeIam · 27/03/2025 16:40

I bet Gregg's would've toasted it!

I think when I was young we ate them untoasted. And I never had a toasted teacake until I met my (English) DH. Now I always toast them, so that you get more butter melted. We don't have Gail's up here yet but enjoyed when south. No more!

BeaTwix · 27/03/2025 16:49

Bloody Gail's. They've expanded too fast too quickly and their product offering is really suffering.

There are FOUR within easy (25 minute) walking distance of my flat with a fifth scheduled to open soon.

I only go there in extremis and I'm deeply suspicious of their bread and go elsewhere for minimally processed product.

BeyondMyWits · 27/03/2025 16:51

Clue is in the name HOT cross buns. Best still warm from the bakers as they used to traditionally be on Good Friday.

Toasted is an alternative way to ensure they are hot.

CitizenofMoronia · 27/03/2025 16:27

the clue is in the name HOT cross bun! trading standards an no less!

Yeah, to be fair, originally the “hot" meant spicy. But otherwise, I’m with you in that they should be toasted and therefore hot in two ways. With LASHINGS of butter (and ginger beer).

BeaAndBen · 27/03/2025 16:52

What sort of savage wants a hot cross bun that's neither toasted nor buttered?

DappledThings · 27/03/2025 16:53

Teacaketravesty · 27/03/2025 16:16

No butter offered

Sick and wrong

Jaichangecentfoisdenom · 27/03/2025 16:54

lcakethereforeIam · 27/03/2025 16:32

Thank you! Exactly this.

It’s hot as in spicy, not as in hot out of the oven. Though as far as I’m concerned, the only good hot cross bun is one which is raging at being toasted.

Zimunya · 27/03/2025 16:58

Yup. They don't heat their croissants either.

I have read some terrible things on Mumsnet over the years, terrible. I have cried at some of them. This, though, has to be the absolute worst. I hope your DH has logged this shocking heinous incident with 101. Have you taken to Twitter yet? People need to be made aware.

Bastards 😡

Mydahliasareshit · 27/03/2025 17:01

Thanks for the warning. Will go elsewhere for my HOT cross bun needs! 😋

MugPlate · 27/03/2025 17:02

I’m more concerned about the tea tbh. They use those knitted plastic tea bags that impart a vague sense of tea, over the course of half an hour, rather than an actual proper tea taste. And don’t get me started on the coffee.

Flyboyblue · 27/03/2025 17:03

No butter? He should have reported them to the police.

I prefer them cold but the butter should be thick enough to leave teeth marks. Tandsmør as the Danish say.

BobbyBiscuits · 27/03/2025 17:06

If they have toaster I fail to see why. Gail's is shite anyway. The coffee is always tepid. And all their bakes etc are massively overpriced.
Only good thing is the hazelnut spread, without chocolate. I've not found that anywhere else but a tenner? Gawd.

Azaleahead · 27/03/2025 17:10

Gail’s won’t toast anything - I asked for my panini thing to be heated when they served it to me cold, but no.

Will not go back…

How can they not toast Paninis? They are meant to be toasted.

EcruCardigan · 27/03/2025 17:17

If he asked for a hot cross bun, why did he get a cold cross bun?
