Gail’s warning

Teacaketravesty · 27/03/2025 16:10

My husband bought a tea and a hot cross bun in a Gail’s in central London yesterday, and they refused to toast it.

That’s it, that’s my PSA. Idk if it’s Gail-wide or if he was unlucky. I found some guff on their website about their HCBs being good enough not to toast but no actual confession. DH had no time to argue so just ate it: it was rubbish. I’d have asked for a swap for something that is meant to be eaten cold, but he is less good at sticking up for himself so had to live with the sadness.

Vipers, be warned.

I haven’t been to Starbucks since 2004 when they refused to toast my bagel. They used to slice it in two and pop it in the panini press.

SinisterBumFacedCat · 28/03/2025 12:13

Sat in the sunshine eating a toasted hot cross bun with butter on now. My back garden is officially better than GAILS. I don’t get the place tbh. Popped in because I fancied a pastry, closest thing they had was a small raspberry cake for £4.50! That’s not even eat in. I went to the Italian deli up the road and got 2 massive danish pastries instead, for less money. GAILS is a rip off.

This is the kind of pettiness I live for 🤣 I too have longstanding feuds with various shops

I boycott Starbucks because of their tax avoidance. I was pleased when my local one closed down.

Davros · 28/03/2025 13:50

I stopped going to Gail’s because they refuse to take cash. I had brought my wheelbarrow full of coins to buy a cheese straw, barely enough, but they wouldn’t take it anyway

HorsesAreRunningOn3LegsTonight · 28/03/2025 18:36

New Gail’s opened near me - Pain Au Raisin nearly £5 to eat in ?
Theyre ‘avin a bloomin’ larf !

Iamthemoom · 28/03/2025 18:37

Literally witnessed DH tucking into TWO untoasted HCBs at Gail’s Mill Hill last week. I was so shocked had no words but assumed he just hadn’t asked for them toasted. But maybe this is the Gail’s way? But how? Why? What sort of claggy, dry mouthed hell are they putting unwitting HCB lovers through?

Have a tea cake if you want something toasted. A good hot cross bun is nicer cold!

Hard disagree!
Has to be toasted!
As op says... The clue is in the name: HOT cross bun!
Absurd & lazy.

I'll give them a swerve! 😏

MaryJane87 · 28/03/2025 20:42

Piqued my interest in the Gail's menu so I looked it up and they do serve both untoasted and toasted HCBs at the Woolwich branch. Suspect you were unlucky...

Jumpers4goalposts · 28/03/2025 20:54

How can it be a HCB if not toasted surely it’s just a fruit bun.

Lobsterteapot · 28/03/2025 20:55

Thought this was going to be about coronation st <disappointed>

I’ve never been to a Gail’s, I don’t think. Thank you for the warning. I shall avoid if I stumble across one.

Their coffee is actually very good (though not hot enough). It's a poncetastic Greggs for the middleclasses.

lilkitten · 28/03/2025 23:15

Never heard of Gail's, but they absolutely should be toasted and covered in butter. I do kind of miss people warming up muffins though, like they do in Australia, then putting butter on them

ElinoristhenewEnid · 29/03/2025 06:47

You do not toast a hot cross bun you warm it in the oven and open and cover in butter. Toasting is for tea cakes!

It is a teacake, just with a cross on the top so you treat it the same. Just warmed through would be nearly as bad as cold.

RedToothBrush · 29/03/2025 07:08

YABU.

If he's stupid enough to pay ridiculously over the odds at Gails for a product that's done better elsewhere, then he can't be helped. His lesson is to not be suckered by marketing and to go to an independent instead which focuses on doing things right.

the clue is in the name HOT cross bun! trading standards an no less!

This

I'm outraged - luckily I live in the country and no Gail's near us

BeaLola · 29/03/2025 07:36

lcakethereforeIam · 27/03/2025 16:40

I bet Gregg's would've toasted it!

Yes and give you lashings of butter - 3 cheers for Greggs

( I still live in the country not near a Greggs either but have been in one in Newcastle)

Pippyls67 · 29/03/2025 08:34

I do believe- correct me if I’m wrong - that it’s toasted tea cakes not toasted hot crossed buns traditionally. You may have crossed a line here. Next people will be wanting toasted sweet baked goods of any description. It will be anarchy.

partridgeinasweartree · 29/03/2025 08:48

They don’t even heat their soup! They refused to warm a ham and cheese croissant too, which was just a bit meh as a result.

Is there a price difference?

IamMaz · 29/03/2025 09:02

I don’t know anything about ‘Gails’. I live near Bournemouth. Are they around here?

I’m not usually fussed about whether I have one toasted or not. But if I was having one from a cafe, I’d prefer it toasted in case it’s a little stale.

Someone needs to tell Count Binface, he’s a proper activist fighting against this nonsense.

If Binface stood on a platform of banning Gails, weekly bin collections and ending the pothole plague he'd probably have a good chance of winning seats.

Sadly it doesn't have prices!
