Gail’s warning

Teacaketravesty · 27/03/2025 16:10

My husband bought a tea and a hot cross bun in a Gail’s in central London yesterday, and they refused to toast it.

That’s it, that’s my PSA. Idk if it’s Gail-wide or if he was unlucky. I found some guff on their website about their HCBs being good enough not to toast but no actual confession. DH had no time to argue so just ate it: it was rubbish. I’d have asked for a swap for something that is meant to be eaten cold, but he is less good at sticking up for himself so had to live with the sadness.

Vipers, be warned.

It’s Gail’s. Used to be good, upmarket. Now just as ubiquitous as Costa. Not surprised.

With flies flying around and landing on food in the counter, just like Costa.

Gail's are a 2nd rate chain bakery. We have one in our town. Luckily we also have at least 3 local cafes and two bakers that sell superior products at considerably lower prices.

No butter offered

NO BUTTER??!! That is one hell of a drip feed. YABVU.

Yeah, to be fair, originally the “hot" meant spicy. But otherwise, I’m with you in that they should be toasted and therefore hot in two ways. With LASHINGS of butter (and ginger beer).

We were told - in primary school, so many decades of forgetfulness ago - it was because they were sold hot from the bakery on Good Friday... salesmen outside shouting "Get your hot cross buns here"... they were originally just called cross buns.

Creepybookworm · 27/03/2025 17:52

I ordered a fruit scone in a local independent cafe recently. It took a weirdly long time to come to the table and when it did, they had toasted it 🥺.

Eddielizzard · 27/03/2025 17:53

That warrants a full on boycott. Utterly disgusting. Unless there was a very large wadge of cold butter nearby

DuckbilledSplatterPuff · 27/03/2025 17:55

Lenten penance - they only toast them after Easter Sunday? 😀

Gail’s = Tory Greggs

I think that is an insult to Tories, much as I have never voted Tory.

I wish to apologise to you all for not telling you about this when it happened to a work colleague.

Unfortunately I don't think local trading standards would be interested in the misleading selling of hot cross buns.

Sixth rate in your town then.

Talk about a drip feed!!!
😱😱😱

I think no butter is the bigger crime tbh

Luckily I'm too tight to go to Gail's

No butter offered

Thoughts and prayers for DH

HarryVanderspeigle · 27/03/2025 18:01

No butter 😱

We don't have a Gail's, so they won't notice me moving from never going to boycotting, but the intention is there!

lifeonmars100 · 27/03/2025 18:03

We don't have Gails where I live, I am guessing it is a cafe chain thing, too lazy to google

FullOfLemons · 27/03/2025 18:04

had to live with the sadness

😂

Boycott them in your soul, that is what I am going to do even though I had never heard of them until today😀

altaego · 27/03/2025 18:05

do you toast HCB's??? i know you toast tea-cakes?

FuckityFux · 27/03/2025 18:05

It’s a UK chain bakery, so what do you expect, sadly? 🤷🏻‍♀️

LauderSyme · 27/03/2025 18:06

I keep hearing about Gail's but we don't have them where I am. Which I think is for the best, given all these heinous crimes.

AlviarinAesSedai · 27/03/2025 18:13

I always thought the hot part of ‘hot cross bun’ was the spices used.
But the north east bakery called Pink Lane Bakery (Newcastle) and Northern Rye make the best hot cross buns.

MikeRafone · 27/03/2025 18:15

Id be upset about butter not offered, but HCB were never toasted - we got them hot from the bakery and eat with butter. Thus the song Hot cross buns

as a child I remember queuing for hot cross buns from the baker - as they only baked them for good Friday

Jaq27 · 27/03/2025 18:26

The horror.
My in-laws also used to eat them 'raw' ... sandwiched with butter and strawberry jam.
Bloody heathen Geordies.
On another note I ordered a Welsh Cake from a naice coffee shop and it was served raw with no butter. Surely this is not correct?
It was eating a thick, dry flavourless biscuit.

Teacaketravesty · 27/03/2025 18:34

A cold, nekkid Welsh cake?!
Harrowing.

My DH goes to Pink Lane as often as he can, for their gorgeous bread and their croissants (they have a sort of Bakewell tart filling and loads of almonds.) I will suggest he gets a couple of HCBs when he's next there.

DuckbilledSplatterPuff · 27/03/2025 18:49

I want a hot cross bun now but all I've got is crumpets.
