Gail’s warning

Teacaketravesty · 27/03/2025 16:10

My husband bought a tea and a hot cross bun in a Gail’s in central London yesterday, and they refused to toast it.

That’s it, that’s my PSA. Idk if it’s Gail-wide or if he was unlucky. I found some guff on their website about their HCBs being good enough not to toast but no actual confession. DH had no time to argue so just ate it: it was rubbish. I’d have asked for a swap for something that is meant to be eaten cold, but he is less good at sticking up for himself so had to live with the sadness.

Vipers, be warned.

Don't think I've ever had a toasted hot cross bun. never thought about it before. My mum did love a toasted teacake tho, bless her.
They ALL have to have butter, whichever way you eat it.
I'll not be going to Gail's, not that there's any up here anyway!

Maybe he shouldn't eat at Gail's anymore then?

Talk about a drip feed!!!
😱😱😱

... but not a lovely drip of melted butter running down the chin.

Pedallleur · 27/03/2025 17:25

Yes to cold if fresh but otherwise warmed in the oven or convection microwave. They charge 2.90!!! My local Italian deli sells their own which are larger by about 20% for 1.50. And arguably better. Gail's is ok, has some good things but over priced imo. Bread no better than M&S but I have a choice of bakers near me.

Marmiteontoastgirlie · 27/03/2025 17:28

Gail’s doesn’t toast anything. They also don’t toast ham & cheese croissants or heat up sausage rolls.

NilByMuff · 27/03/2025 17:31

Wrong uns

What?!!

Something so sad about that phrase no butter offered in the context of HCBs.

I needed my smelling salts reading that update. As if the OP wasn't horrifying enough.

Spring025 · 27/03/2025 17:32

Cold and no butter? Are they confusing it with a cupcake or something?

LincolnshireYellowBelly · 27/03/2025 17:34

They won’t hear a cheese scone either!!

I buy their HCBs to heat and eat at home. Best ones around, and they remind me of the ones my mum used to make.

OOlivePenderghast · 27/03/2025 17:35

I experienced this last week! Apparently they will only toast them before 3pm at my local Gail’s. I got a takeaway one and toasted it at home with lashings of butter.

No butter? Bloody philistines.

BatchCookBabe · 27/03/2025 17:37

YANBU, I couldn't eat a Hot Cross Bun untoasted! (OR a teacake!) Would taste doughy and chewy. And as for no butter?! Ewww. No! Shock Thanks for the warning @Teacaketravesty

Please Please please Please tell me they at least serve butter and a little dish of caramelized onion chutney with the scones?

LimeJellyforBrains · 27/03/2025 17:37

But look at their bloody online menu!!
Not only toasted HCB with Butter, but apparently .... on toast?! 😮

Gail’s warning
Berryslacks · 27/03/2025 17:37

I have never been in Gail’s but did read that they like to open up in old buildings often Banks that have closed. I have thought about a good site for them near me but it’s probably too far North. I am not sure I want them now if they won’t heat up sausage rolls and ham and cheese croissants.Hot cross buns should be cold but served with lots of butter. I like M&S apple hot cross buns.Tea cakes should be toasted with butter. My DH makes me extremely cross as he also wants jam on his toasted teacake which I think should be reserved for scones.

Christwosheds · 27/03/2025 17:37

Teacaketravesty · 27/03/2025 16:16

No butter offered

Shocking state of affairs.

HanSB · 27/03/2025 17:38

I reckon it's to do with VAT, anything warmed up would need VAT added to price?

mustytrusty · 27/03/2025 17:39

HOT cross bun. Must be toasted or else it's not what it says on the tin.

Bullfinch13 · 27/03/2025 17:39

catlovingdoctor · 27/03/2025 16:34

I agree, they've lost their touch as they've gotten so big.

I only tried it for the first time on holiday in December and I loved it so much I went back the same week. There aren’t near us. I thought the food was lush.

Iwanttoliveonamountain · 27/03/2025 17:40

Gails is overrated. You have to ask for butter, but they will give it to you without charge.

Alconleigh · 27/03/2025 17:41

Gail’s = Tory Greggs

MyNameIsSharon · 27/03/2025 17:41

Teacaketravesty · 27/03/2025 16:16

No butter offered

😱😱😱 A cold, dry hot cross bun. That's an abomination.

RitaFromThePitCanteen · 27/03/2025 17:45

A cold cross bun sounds so unappealing

BlackSwan · 27/03/2025 17:47

They wouldn't give me a slice of bread to go with my salad. It was takeaway. I know they have it, they give it away with soup. I said i would happily pay for it and that I'm a good customer. They said I would have to buy a whole loaf.
(They gave me a slice of bread once for free, and now I've come to expect it)
I was going to tell them to sod off... but I bought a cheese stick instead. Shows them.
