Gail’s warning

Teacaketravesty · 27/03/2025 16:10

My husband bought a tea and a hot cross bun in a Gail’s in central London yesterday, and they refused to toast it.

That’s it, that’s my PSA. Idk if it’s Gail-wide or if he was unlucky. I found some guff on their website about their HCBs being good enough not to toast but no actual confession. DH had no time to argue so just ate it: it was rubbish. I’d have asked for a swap for something that is meant to be eaten cold, but he is less good at sticking up for himself so had to live with the sadness.

Vipers, be warned.

Did they refuse or did he forget to ask and then blame them? I bought a delicious HCB from Gail's yesterday and there was a little plastic sign next to them saying toast and butter is available for a charge.

SnowdropsBlooming · 29/03/2025 12:26

they definitely refuse at my local one, as I've asked!

He didn’t order it toasted and buttered because he didn’t know anyone, anywhere would think it fine to plop a cold one onto a plate and hand it over, but he asked at that point and was roundly thwarted.

So my guess is he didn't see the sign and then expected the toasting and butter for free. Gail's would have thought he was a chancer.

Leaving aside the ethics of this astonishing policy, they surely would’ve said, ‘Yes but it’s £x’ (a fiver? A tenner? We’re already in the realm of madness). He’d have paid it, he was Hank Marvin and no other option in the time available.

It’s ridiculous that a posh baker charges extra for butter and toasting which should be an optional part of their product

I agree they should have offered for free but I've never found their customer service that good. Unfortunately I like their food.

Gail’s is the biggest rip off going: the little quiche affairs are tiny and far too dear for what they are. Can make miles better myself.

I think you can mostly always make better things than the high street provides yourself but when you want someone else to make them the quality isn't often there.
Sometimes I really want a sweet treat with my coffee and I'm expecting it to good enough for me to consider eating and it so rarely is - I'm looking at you Costa and Starbucks - even our local small independents use margarine in their "butter cream" it's gross.

A Chancer! 😂
Surely if that was the case they would have pointed out the small sign.

I wonder why they won’t toast items on request?
As an aside at their priciness, the Gail’s in my old home town used to charge £12.50 for a boiled egg and sour dough soldiers.
i often thought about ordering it just to see what £12 egg and toast tasted like.
The cinnamon buns were good though.

Thats a lot of money for toast and eggs at a high street cafe

Claridges children breakfast menu charges the same for dippy egg and toast

Its cheaper for 2 boiled eggs and toast at the Wolsely - coming in at £10.50, this is of course with silver cutler and napkins along with table service and a location alongside The Ritz in Mayfair

Damn, I love The Wolseley! I'm craving their Welsh Rarebit now.

I can spent £15 on a light lunch and feel like I belong in a Jeeves and Wooster world for a brief period. It's lovely.

Kielys72 · 31/03/2025 17:26

Gail’s = overpriced and underwhelming.

linsey2581 · 31/03/2025 19:39

What’s a Gail’s?? Also Hot Cross Buns are better cold with a 2 inch slab of butter across it.

kennycat · 31/03/2025 23:09

what a weird policy. surely if a customer wants it toasted they can do that. what ghastly customer service. i shall not be entering this establishment on the basis of this ludicrousness.
my husband eats HCBs cold straight from packet with nothing spread on it. i only permit them
from Holy Week and every Holy Week o remember that i’m considering divorcing him because of his grotesque and frankly unacceptable HCB habit.

It’s a bakery/cafe chain.
