Why don't you pop off with your friends and try it out. Lmk how you get on with making a group chat in DMs.

I’m happy on the group forum, thanks! I also understand the concept of open public discussion and don’t feel entitled to an echo chamber of likeminded opinions

Labraradabrador · 27/03/2025 22:29

Llttledrummergirl · 27/03/2025 22:25

Interesting. It's considered rather rude in most circles to insult longstanding members of a group and try to hound them out, particularly when you've only recently started conversing in the group.

It makes more sense, for those who don't like the established group discussing issues, to either enter the conversation respectfully, or to fuck off without trying (and failing) to insult their intelligence.

Who exactly am I hounding out? I object to being told ‘you don’t belong here’ on a public forum. If this group has evolved to a members only discussion, then feel free to take it somewhere private.

Oh dear, but you're not happy really, are you? Nobody genuinely happy feels the need to try and take over a chat thread. Unless of course they have some kind of social communication failure.

Anyway, where did that squirrel go?

I only occasionally contribute to these threads but I do follow them with interest. Sadly it's really become quite toxic recently but I hope it returns to the more respectful debate and discussion that is its more usual MO.
I therefore offer a cat as a calming influence (and I can confirm he's definitely a freeloader who has never paid any tax all his life)

Edited

He's a beauty and, appropriately, giving the side eye.

The 🍊 is no ally

NEW: We obtained new US proposal. The Trump admin is pushing to gain sweeping control over all of Ukraine’s major minerals and energy assets, while offering Kyiv no security guarantees, in an aggressive expansion of previous demands.

Haven’t been this happy in a while - I do love a lively debate. What would make me happier is if the debate was something substantive rather than whether I was allowed to post on a public forum.

Zonder · 27/03/2025 22:24

That's ridiculous Rummly. I actually expected better from you. So much of MN is about people finding like minded people and chatting together. It's not all AIBU.

It’s really not ridiculous.

‘Not being in AIBU’ is not a thread status or a way of gatekeeping. If people start threads in chat or politics or news, etc, about political subjects that any of the regulars here feel strongly enough to post about, they will, and do.

Similarly these threads aren’t exclusive.

English artist Lizzie Riches.

Of course the first thing I did was try to zoom in on the seam lines.

Did anyone else here get to see the red dress on its tour? A remarkable piece of work.

I had never seen her designs before, someone posted that picture on my timeline and I loved it.

It’s beautiful. I’d never heard of her before I saw your post. I’d love to see some of her work.

Notonthestairs · 27/03/2025 22:50

I like her Gift of Flowers series. I like a still life.

DuncinToffee · 27/03/2025 23:05

Luke Tryl tells Newsnight that the word that sums up the British public mood on the return of Trump is "discombobulated".

OP posts:
Notonthestairs · 27/03/2025 23:20

It’s a good word but it’s not quite right. I think the British public got the measure first time around and certainly post Capitol Hill attack.

PickAChew · 27/03/2025 23:28

Yeah. Discombobulated would suggest that we had no idea what to expect of him.

Horrified does nicely.

Llttledrummergirl · 27/03/2025 23:33

It's like watching a dodgy circus in action. The clowns are running the show and you don't know when the wheels are going to fall off the car. The illusionists are running rings around them while the ringmaster hides in the shadows.

I think certain people don’t understand the culture of these threads.

O think certain people don’t understand the cultural norms of conversation.

Have we had “my dad is bigger than yours and can beat you up.” Yet?!

More about the red dress

Wow I just read the article and then got lost down the rabbit hole of Kirstie's work. Stunning. Thanks for this.

Quite. Imagine feeling happy because you have tried to derail a group of people on a long standing thread. Sad, as Mr Bigly himself would say. Anyway we can carry on regardless now.

MyNameIsX · 28/03/2025 06:36

You mentioned that some of us ‘newcomers’ lacked stamina.

Well, I intend to stay and I remain keen to debate.

Let’s go.

MyNameIsX · 28/03/2025 06:38

Steel tycoon Lakshmi Mittal is preparing to leave the UK in response to a government crackdown on non-domiciled residents, making him one of the wealthiest entrepreneurs to move because of the tax reform.

The Indian businessman — who has lived in the UK for three decades — has told associates that his likely departure is in response to the Labour government’s decision to end the “non-dom” regime, which allowed certain UK residents to avoid paying British tax on foreign income and gains.

FT

A former Labour donor, one might add.

Efacsen · 28/03/2025 06:46

The red dress on the previous page is really beautiful - thanks for posting

Notonthestairs · 28/03/2025 06:57

one of the Gift of Flowers pictures I mentioned.
