@cardibach I would be happy to do GMT +1 - it would bring us closer in line with our European neighbours for most of the year.
Pros and Cons for both ideas though I guess, just saying.

In the winter it was light until 10? There are about 8 hours of daylight in January in the U.K. I don’t see how moving them an hour forward makes much odds either way. And there’s no logic to it.

In December it's finally light after 8:30, getting on for 9 on dark days and I give up and shut the curtains again not long after 3:30. I'm not even in Scotland! All we would gain by being in BST all year is more people driving home with the sun in their eyes.

None here. I can’t remember when I last saw one. As you say Duncin, there’s clearly a need. Businesses aren’t employing them to ride round the streets for shits and giggles.

The last one I saw had his bike parked next to the bench he was sleeping on in a sleeping bag when I walked past him at 5.20 this morning.

people working and not even earning enough to provide a roof over their head - it’s disgraceful.

we dont have that many around considering I’m always in the very large city by my town.

We have three visitors today. Isn't that lovely.

It's a shame they never seem to stay for long.

Hi, I am just back from work - working to pay the tax necessary to support those unable or unwilling to work.

Yes, it’s fantastic posters wish to engage with this thread - I applaud it too.

Rest assured, I shall stay.

Yep, I've been at work too, happily paying my taxes to support those who are less fortunate than I am when it comes to their health and ability to work.

DuncinToffee · 27/03/2025 20:29

Do immigrants who pay tax get brownie points?

Excellent, let’s compare notes.

What was your tax liability for the FY ending 24?

Notonthestairs · 27/03/2025 20:32

Oh good Lord. We’ve got financial willy waving on the thread. Fabulous.

come on Pointy - prove your worth 😉

Let the PP answer, please.

This is a serious issue.

Nah, I'm not the pathetic points scoring type. We all do our bit according to our capacity to do so, and some of us don't feel the need to brag about it. Paying taxes is a basic civic duty after all.

Nearly 9 year old Ford Focus Estate with 120k on the clock. Good, reliable transport and fun to drive.

Notonthestairs · 27/03/2025 20:38

i think we should all prove our financial worthiness.
should be a MN prerequisite really.
it’s not like it’s netmums.
surprised they don’t enforce that when we sign up.

I’ve been at home on my work pension happily paying tax out of it for all those things too.

Absolutely, or maybe we should have a completely separate forum for people who Pay Lots Of Tax And Like To Talk About It.

Anyway, I work in the public sector, so I'm Not A Real Taxpayer anyway.

My income is a teacher’s pension so ‘gold plated’ and based on not real work or tax paying. Damn.

MyNameIsX · 27/03/2025 20:42

Money talks, bullshit walks.

Notonthestairs · 27/03/2025 20:45

Oh, I know this one.
Wolf of Wall Street.

Next.

Saucery · 27/03/2025 20:45

Are we doing our houses next? Are we the Daily Mail? Oh heck, we’re not are we?

MyNameIsX · 27/03/2025 20:48

Listen, people talk a big game when they are committing other people’s hard earned - that’s easy.

When it comes to their own money, it becomes slightly more complicated, doesn’t it?

Funny that…

Pensioner here. And I bet I’ve paid more tax than all of you. I made my first tax payment at 33% basic rate - drumroll - 54 years ago.

Saucery · 27/03/2025 20:52

Not really. I pay my tax, that’s my bit done. Honestly couldn’t be bothered to waste time and energy frothing my self into a frenzy that it might have gone to the Undeserving Poor. What a pointless thing to have taking up space in my mind. I’d probably make the effort to get out more if I realised I’d become that sort of person.

Nah, let's not get dragged down to that level.

Let's leave Elon's son to it.

No. I like a functioning society where services work and people don’t starve if they have disabilities and so on. It’s not the amount of tax, it’s the principle. I’ve paid without complaint, including some CGT which only needed to be paid because of the pandemic slowing everything down.

pointythings · 27/03/2025 20:54

Define 'own money'.

I pay the taxes I am legally obliged to pay. I hope you do too.
Mind you, I was also a Single Mum On Benefits for approximately 2 years after I split from my late husband. I got the princely sum of about £40 a month in tax credits. Then again for most of my kids' lives we didn't get child benefit because of my husband's nationality and residence status, so swings and roundabouts.

Since the Dutch government paid for my healthcare and education for the first 30 years I reckon I'm still a net contributor.
