A customs union would be a welcome second best option if the single market could not be agreed with the EU.

I would have ended the temporary fuel duty cut first, but NI cuts probably a close thing. Well second and third, as the first thing I'd do in government is ensure BST all year round.

Nooooooo! I like to be able to wake up in the morning! It's dark here up north!

(is that enough discord to satisfy our visitors?)

Are you two a tag team…can’t think for yourselves…

you do you …I’ll do me ….clearly we live in
parallel universes 🙂

I live in an area with lots of food delivery. They don’t seem to ride on pavements though, and as others have said, they won’t employ more than they need at any one time - it’s all casual work.

Hilarious 😆
anyone can post anywhere …as far as I’m aware it’s an open forum.

yep AS a great tool if you are that way inclined ….😜

Of course you can - it's just new for you so I am somewhat curious what brings you to this one rather than the many many other politics threads.

I don’t get the love for BST. It makes no sense to me. Britain is on the actual Greenwich Meridian - if we aren’t on GMT what’s the point? Plus I don’t see how one is any different from the other given how much daylight we get in the summer. I think we should be permanently on GMT.

Diorchristian · 27/03/2025 18:32

@DuncinToffee can't it? If they are working in underground economy?

So how are you going to fill the existing 150,000 social care vacancies? Obviously we can’t leave vulnerable people without care. For one thing it contributes to delays in hospital admissions which damages productivity.
If you are going to raise wages then we’ll need to increase council tax and £ from central funding.

There are over 1.5 million unemployed in the UK. It's ridiculous to rely on migrants to do these jobs whilst at the same time paying benefits to UK born citizens. It's madness that someone can work 16 hours a week and receive top up benefits, but if they increase their hours they would be worse off. Work should always pay more than being on benefits, even on minimum wage otherwise where is the incentive to work?

Obviously I'm not including people with disabilities in the above.

That's an interesting turnaround on the usual "immigrants are to come for your jobs while claiming benefits" trope.

Claiming benefit and working underground?

I don't think there's enough mining in the UK for that, is there?

Care work requires sensitivity, empathy and gentleness. They look after people at their most vulnerable, the disabled and the elderly.
It’s not a job to coerce others in to.
It’s not a job which should be utilised as punishment to the unemployed.

Unless of course you care little for how that might play out.

And you think that only migrants would fit that criteria?

My mother was in a rehabilitation centre after an operation when she was in her mid 80s, the migrant worker who was one of her carers was definitely not caring or gentle and I made a complaint about her.

Notonthestairs · 27/03/2025 19:08

Now you are being very silly.

I am suggesting that people that actively look for those jobs are likely to be better at it than people forced in to it.

Nodoy ever suggests increasing the wages do they? We'd have to pay more in tax but it would undoubtedly attract more people to it as a career.

I have a disabled child. i have plenty of experience with carers. thanks.

My mother is in one at this very moment. There have been fantastic and not so fantastic staff. Whether they are immigrants is irrelevant.

Karistyleaftea · 27/03/2025 19:18

I agree with you re BST @LlynTegid - sorry @PickAChew!
I think it could help the economy (a bit) and make people feel slightly better during our dark winter months.
I am sure there was a study some while back suggesting it was safer for kids too, as more of them get dropped off in the morning than picked up after school?
Between 1968 and 1971 they suspended BST and called it British standard time.
As a Northern kid at the time I remember it fondly, it was light until 10 pm.

Saucery · 27/03/2025 19:20

We have to make Carer, Support Worker etc something people want to do and that will take a fair bit of investment in pay and training.

Llttledrummergirl · 27/03/2025 19:20

We never used to have supermarkets, offices, fast food, hospitality either. We should get rd of them too. Doctors who use science instead of leeches, they can go, police etc.

Who needs freedom, democracy, infrastructure that supports it?

In the winter it was light until 10? There are about 8 hours of daylight in January in the U.K. I don’t see how moving them an hour forward makes much odds either way. And there’s no logic to it.

Llttledrummergirl · 27/03/2025 19:24

We have three visitors today. Isn't that lovely.

It's a shame they never seem to stay for long.

BestIsWest · 27/03/2025 19:25

The majority of care my mother has received has been fantastic by the way. Nothing has been too much trouble for the nursing and healthcare staff. The organisational side on the other hand.

True that we need to value these people much better than we do.

Karistyleaftea · 27/03/2025 19:30

@cardibach I should have clarified for you - it was light till !0 pm in the summer months, obvs, not all year round and I have given my point of view regarding the logic behind my thinking.
We never all have to agree on these threads.
It is our very own think tank,

But we are always on BST in the summer months.
To me it only makes sense to be GMT in the U.K. as we are on the Greenwich Meridian. I don’t think the historical reasons behind BST really stand up in the modern world.
