I think I had my first ever mobile phone (The Brick) in 1998 when I was 32. Checking through photos, I think it was a Siemens S6 and me and my partner got one each (our phone numbers were 1 digit apart) because I was pregnant and he worked away a lot.

I loved that phone. It was pretty sleek feeling.

When did you get your first mobile and how old were you?

2001, starting high school so age 11! It was a fair distance away and I was getting the bus. It was also a Siemens, an S45 according to a quick google of what it looked like. I felt VERY grown up.

1998 when I was 11. My school was several miles away. and involved me having to get the bus so I had a phone from year 7 to be able to contact home. It was a Philips phone, with BT Cellnet!

I think 1999. Got 10 free texts a day so tried to limit it to that. Erickson I think but loved my Nokia later on.
Dh and I got phones at the same time in 2002 and still have the same numbers apart from 1 too!

BestTownInLAcounty · 12/03/2025 21:28

1999 I think as I was in last year of primary? It was a brick with a pull up antenna, only for calling home as I lived miles away from my school.

Nokia 5110 in 1999 - I was 17 and passed my driving test so mum wanted me to have a phone. She wanted me to have a Sony Ericsson because it was a great deal but I behaved like a spoiled brat because I really wanted the Nokia. I wasn’t usually like that and was offering to pay the difference.

Watto1 · 12/03/2025 21:30

It was a Motorola C520 and I got it in 1999. I’d just moved into a shared house with no landline otherwise I would have probably gone on for a good while without one!

Muchtoomuchtodo · 12/03/2025 21:30
  1. I bought it with my first wages after graduation!

It was a Nokia - beauty!

It was 1999. DH and I shared the phone and sometimes argued who needed it most on any given day. That same number is now mine I won but obviously has been through several phones since.

SparklyGlitterballs · 12/03/2025 21:31

This one. Still have it and it still turns on.

DH had one much older that was a true brick.

I think about 1998 too?

I had a friend who worked for Motorola in the late 90s and she got the first flip phone - it was also the first phone that vibrated I think?

Boeufsurletoit · 12/03/2025 21:33

1999, and I loved it. Wish I could get one now! www.mobilephonemuseum.com/phone-detail/motorola-mr30-(ak-mp1)

1999, was 32 and it was a Nokia 8110 (banana phone)
Didn't have text originally, and when I got it set up I only knew one other person who text! Phone would only hold 10 texts so they had to be deleted regularly.

LadyGaGasPokerFace · 12/03/2025 21:36

1996 Motorola brick flip 😂 it had a cradle charger and an aerial you had to pull out.

SkaneTos · 12/03/2025 21:36

I was a teenager, and it was a Christmas gift from my parents.
It was an Ericsson.

Titasaducksarse · 12/03/2025 21:37
  1. Think it was a motorola
MustBeThursday · 12/03/2025 21:37

2000, I was 12, and it was a Phillips Savvy. Text messages cost 2p then! It used to make a weird interference type noise before a text came through. I had a little chair shaped holder to sit it in in my room that lit up when I got a text or call!

AgeingDoc · 12/03/2025 21:37

I got a Sony Mars bar in either 1994 or 95, I can't remember exactly. Not that many peopleI knew had mobiles then and that was one of the smallest ones around at the time so I thought I was very cool! 😂

Longma · 12/03/2025 21:39

October 1996
I was 23y and not long started my first full time job.

My first year of teaching. I had a car accident where someone drive into the back of me and had no way of contacting anyone. Dh went and bought me a phone that day.

Wow, that was early to have a mobile phone!
You must have been very cool!

grimupnorthnot · 12/03/2025 21:40

1988 Nokia Cityman

Longma · 12/03/2025 21:41

Dh thinks it was a Motorola or Nokia but can't remember which model.
It had an aerial you pulled out.
