I think I had my first ever mobile phone (The Brick) in 1998 when I was 32. Checking through photos, I think it was a Siemens S6 and me and my partner got one each (our phone numbers were 1 digit apart) because I was pregnant and he worked away a lot.

I loved that phone. It was pretty sleek feeling.

When did you get your first mobile and how old were you?

Aah I don't know what happened to all my old mobiles, wish I'd kept them!

I remember getting my first Samsung flip phone with a colour screen and caller display on the outside 🤣

ellesbellesxxx · 12/03/2025 21:43

2000! I was 16 and had my first job and started sixth form, a good old Motorola 😁

HundredPercentUnsure · 12/03/2025 21:43

Ericsson G628 in 1998, shared with mum and older sibling. We each had a different colour fascia for when it was 'ours' for the day 😂 I was 14/15. Mums colour was red, sibling had blue, I had green.

Got my own individual personal mobile phone, a Nokia 3210, in 2001 age 17.

Nokia in 1996/1997 I was in the equivalent of Y12 and was one of the first to have one!

I had my first mobile phone in 1995 it was a work one. I don't remember the make but it was a chunky one that I do remember! I worked in an account exec role in London and thought I was the bees knees!

LoyalAquaOtter · 12/03/2025 21:45

2001, I was 15 and my parents bought it for me after I got my junior cert results(Irish equivalent of gcses).

Whataninterestinglookingpotato · 12/03/2025 21:45

I inherited my dad’s old Motorola brick when I was 13 in 1998. I got my first new phone which was a Nokia 5110, I think, for my 14th birthday.

Coffeeforayear · 12/03/2025 21:46

Aged 32 , in 2001 i think. I was a late adopter.
I can remember people in the late 90s showing off about their mobile phone use. Loud conversations on trains and in airports. 'IVE JUST GOT OFF THE PLANE...'

Also had older relatives at that time who got mobiles but 'only for emergencies ' and didn't actually switch them on.

SadCarpetMess · 12/03/2025 21:46

1995 so I could be contacted by DC1's nursery while I was at work.

PollyCreo · 12/03/2025 21:47

Who remembers 'polyphonic' ringtones from the early 00s? They were listed in magazines and you had to sign up at a cost of £1.50 😫

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 12/03/2025 21:47

Same as most pps, I think around 1999/2000, I had a basic one when I went to uni in 2000, didn't have one when I went travelling in 1998.

I didn't get a phone with internet on it until quite recently, around 6 years ago.

PiastriThePastry · 12/03/2025 21:47

About 2006, just after starting secondary school. I got a sony Ericsson k300i (had to google that 😂) for Christmas. Sooo tiny with the most fiddly little joystick ever 😅

CrushingOnRubies · 12/03/2025 21:49
  1. I was year 6 I think might have been year 5. But went to school 45 mins away and mum wanted me to have a phone just on case bus broke down or something. Also my dad worked away and my best friend had one which also swayed her. Should add I had been asking for one since she got one a couple of years earlier.
ginislife · 12/03/2025 21:49

August 1993

CrushingOnRubies · 12/03/2025 21:49

Oh and it was a Nokia 3310

TickingAlongNicely · 12/03/2025 21:49

Christmas 2000 - I was in my first term of VI Form

CalliopePlantain · 12/03/2025 21:52

Itsfiiiine · 12/03/2025 21:55

The brick in 1998 when I was 25. Was more reliable than the tiny flip phone that followed which ended up in bits on a dancefloor somewhere 😂

HundredPercentUnsure · 12/03/2025 21:56

You've sent me down a rabbit hole of my historic mobile phones 😂

My favourite was my Samsung E530 Lavender (pink flip phone), probably 2004 ish.

Dropped it in a nightclub once (without a protective case on) from the first floor balcony to the dancefloor on the ground floor below.....I not only managed to find it on the packed dance floor but it survived, too! 💪👌

AnAlpacaForChristmasPleaseSanta · 12/03/2025 21:56

2000 and it was one of these babies. But I was very jealous of my friends who had Nokia 3210s that had chargeable clip on cases and snake.

'99 or 2000, half way through university. Any other Vodafone trium owners out there?
