I think I had my first ever mobile phone (The Brick) in 1998 when I was 32. Checking through photos, I think it was a Siemens S6 and me and my partner got one each (our phone numbers were 1 digit apart) because I was pregnant and he worked away a lot.

I loved that phone. It was pretty sleek feeling.

When did you get your first mobile and how old were you?

I had a pager in 1998 😂. My dad worked in computers and had got it for me. It was really expensive to send messages- I think it cost the other person to receive it and my pages were usually Hi Dad can you give me a call? 😂

I then got a mobile. I think there was a Nokia 3210 around then somewhere. Defo played a lot of snake. I was at uni and a £5 top up would last about the weekend.

2003

Either late 1999 or 2000, the classic Nokai with the slidey front. I had one of those new-fangled online bank accounts (Egg, long since defunct) and it had a special offer for a phone and tariff with it, plus I had just left uni, so it was time.

First smartphone was 2013 when I got a job again after 18 months of mat leave + redundancy.

August 1999, just before I started secondary school as it was a 45 minute journey and mum wanted to me to let her know when I was on the bus.

I'm pretty sure it was this one. It definitely had an arial and was a Vodafone branded one.

1999, was 32 and it was a Nokia 8110 (banana phone)
Didn't have text originally, and when I got it set up I only knew one other person who text! Phone would only hold 10 texts so they had to be deleted regularly.

'98 / '99 and I didn't even realise my phone could send texts for a while. It was even longer before I realised it could do lower case letters.

I got a Sony Mars bar in either 1994 or 95, I can't remember exactly. Not that many peopleI knew had mobiles then and that was one of the smallest ones around at the time so I thought I was very cool! 😂

That was my first one too. Loved it. Cost me £325. I got mine in 1994 when I started working shifts

Oh I think I had that one too! I think it was from Sainsbury's and I had a durable orange case to go with it.

nookmiles · 12/03/2025 22:02

It was around 2000/01 and it was a Nokia 3210.

My friend had the Phillips Savvy and I remember it had a feature on it to tell you your daily horoscope and we thought it was the coolest thing!

DanceMumTaxi · 12/03/2025 22:03

Think it was towards the end of 1998 or start of 1999 when I was in lower 6th. It was a blue Nokia and I loved it.

JustWalkingTheDogs · 12/03/2025 22:04

It must have been about 1998 ish. I got a Motorola flip phone, the one where you had to pull the Ariel up on

bloomingpoppies · 12/03/2025 22:04

1998 when I was at uni! I’d had to go to a phone box to contact my family prior to that! It was a Nokia.

JaneIves · 12/03/2025 22:07

I think a Motorola startac, around 96/97? It had a pull out antenna and a SIM card the size of a credit card.

My favourite ever phone was the Nokia 8310, 2002 I think. It was tiny!
And my first camera phone was the Nokia 6230i.

I've been an iPhone slave since they came out. Not every model, I did have the original though, loved the shape and size of that.

DoAWheelie · 12/03/2025 22:07

1999, I got Nokia 3210 from my mother. She'd been given one at work, then swapped departments and given another with no requirement to give back the first.

I was about 9-10 years old and it was just for the trip to and from school in case I needed help or a lift or wanted to go round to a friends house (or bring one back with me). I wasn't allowed to use it for anything other than texting my parents until well into my teens.

strawlight · 12/03/2025 22:07

1994/5 when I got a free one for opening a student credit card. Huge thing, obviously no camera or anything. When adding phone numbers it stored them in the order they were put in, so I had to scroll down through the list to find anyone. To be fair there weren’t many names in it at that time! Still got it somewhere, along with the teeny tiny Nokia I had next.

Haribosweets · 12/03/2025 22:07

1999, I was 19 and it was a Nokia 402. I remember switching it off at home and only turned it on when I went out. I recall friends trying to ring me when I was at home to see if I wanted to go out and missed a night out! I kept it on after that 🤣 I remember the 10 texts a day and I could text whilst phone in my pocket and it would be correct with no mistakes.

CaveMum · 12/03/2025 22:08

Autumn 1999 aged 18, I’d moved out of home and the flat I was living in was tied-housing and had no landline. It was a Nokia 5110 in orange.

rosalynd34 · 12/03/2025 22:10

I had the Motorola M760 bought in 1998 I think. I thought it was awesome as it was a flip phone.

I'd forgotten about pagers, they were so shit😅 The first ones just used to bleep then they evolved and you could send messages. I used to work night shifts and when we were bored we'd send dirty messages to the operator 🤣

TortolaParadise · 12/03/2025 22:11

1993

WookieMama · 12/03/2025 22:11

1995 when I went to uni, it was a Motorola brick 😂 loved not queuing for the pay phones in student halls 🙈

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 12/03/2025 22:13

1999, a Motorola PAYG, DH and I bought them together. Early 30s.

MoetUndChandon · 12/03/2025 22:14

2000

I think the phone was free with Cosmopolitan, and then a £15 a month contract
