What year did you have your first mobile phone?

I think I had my first ever mobile phone (The Brick) in 1998 when I was 32. Checking through photos, I think it was a Siemens S6 and me and my partner got one each (our phone numbers were 1 digit apart) because I was pregnant and he worked away a lot.

I loved that phone. It was pretty sleek feeling.

When did you get your first mobile and how old were you?

Say you're over 40 without saying you're over 40...

ImWearingPantaloons · 13/03/2025 08:40

1995 I was a reasonably early adopter.

it was from People’s Phone (remember them?) and was an NEC P100. It was big and heavy enough to prop up a door.

1997

About the same time as me, I couldn't decide between the red and the yellow and we were in the shopping mall probably all day while I went backwards and forwards over which I wanted🙇🏻‍♀️🙇🏻‍♀️ (yellow in the end!!)

My partner at the time had had a mobile phone from when they first came out in New Zealand, 1993 I believe. But to call it Mobile was a bit of a stretch. I think we called them cell phones.?? it was the size and weight of a house brick and came on its own carry case🤣🤣

A Christmas present in 2000

It was a Motorola

1998 when I went to uni and opened a student account with Barclays - they gave you a free mobile - one of the BT bricks. Nat West gave pagers to their student account holders. I couldn’t afford use it though as it was 50p per text and about £1 per minute phone. I was 33 (2013) when I got my first modern smartphone with internet etc.

sashh · 13/03/2025 10:20

I had a Nokia. I can't remember the year but I was living in London and I left there in 1998.

I could receive texts but not send them.

@mellongoose My firs 'proper' job was at an electrical wholesalers, a couple of electricians had car phones. That would have been mid to late 80s.

There was also some wag I vaguely knew who got an old phone with a curly cord and screwed the cord in to his car, he would pull up at lights and knock on the window of the car next to him saying, "it's for you".

Oh how we all laughed the 50th time he did it.

XxSideshowAuntSallyx · 13/03/2025 10:22

I got mine in 1996, can't remember the make (it was long before the Nokia brick even came out). Think it was on Cellnet. I've been with them or their various successors ever since (except a couple of years with 3).

1998, in my early 20s, this absolute beauty 😍, Sony Ericsson GA628

I still have mine 2001 0r 2002.

Thisismyalterego · 13/03/2025 13:34

Mine was a pay as you go Siemens on 121 in 1998. It cost me £65 and I used birthday money to pay for it. You had to top up a minimum of £10 per month, calls were very expensive so it would have been actually easy to spend £10 every month, if only I had known anyone with a mobile! I remember one weekend, DH had gone away to see a football match with his dB and I got my first ever text. It was from 121 telling me that we could now send and receive texts on the phone. I think texts were about 10p each. After that I moved on to a Samsung phone with a sliding keyboard, a Motorola flip phone and then, in around 2009/10, my first smartphone.

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 13/03/2025 13:37

1996 - Motorola, the SIM was the size of a credit card. We had a car phone before that that always fascinated me, windy cord and everything.

I had one of those. A curly wired handset on the transmission tunnel connected to a big box of gubbins in the boot. Vodafone. It went obsolete when mobile phones moved to a digital network.

My dad had a car phone in the early/mid 90s too. Can’t remember the exact years but his work provided it and it ended up that they’d always call him if we were away on a family camping holiday.

It came in very handy the time our car broke down in a beach car park in the arse-end of nowhere though. It would have been a walk of a few miles to the closest house to call a breakdown company so it was brilliant that my dad could do that from the car.

popandchoc · 13/03/2025 13:45

It was 2001 i think, i was 14 . Think it was some kind of siemens thing. My dad had a massive brick thing he used to lend to me and my sister before that if we needed to call him to pick us up.

Ha! I'm not!

I may be 39 and 11 months...

sansou · 13/03/2025 13:49

I was 26 and had a freebie 1998 Nokia 5110 because DH worked for Nokia and employees had a perk of 3 extra free phones and contracts for family/friends back then. I remember offering them to my parents who turned it down and we gave them to DH's siblings only ofr my parents to change their minds a week later (too late!).

garlictwist · 13/03/2025 13:54

I got mine in sixth form, so about 1999. It was quite brick like, no camera or anything.

amylou8 · 13/03/2025 14:22

.1996. I can't remember what make it was, but it was a proper brick. I bought it at the Vodafone shop in Ashford Kent. It was too expensive to use for anything other than a quick call, and only had about an hours talk time anyway.

Pinkywoo · 13/03/2025 16:50

Mine was this one in 1999. I was 19 and had moved into a shared house with no landline, e still have the same number today!

Paulettamcgee · 13/03/2025 17:37
  1. I was 19, just had a baby and thought I should have a phone for emergencies.

A Motorola flip phone on the Mercury one 2 one network, £25 a month contract with free calls after 7pm to 7am which I rinsed.

30 years later I still have the same phone number.

1999 I think, it was one of these bad boys... I remember it had room for 10 text messages and stored 20 numbers (I think)!
