What year did you have your first mobile phone?

I think I had my first ever mobile phone (The Brick) in 1998 when I was 32. Checking through photos, I think it was a Siemens S6 and me and my partner got one each (our phone numbers were 1 digit apart) because I was pregnant and he worked away a lot.

I loved that phone. It was pretty sleek feeling.

When did you get your first mobile and how old were you?

  1. We were doing a project house and had no services at the beginning. It was a Sony and nearly as big as one of the house bricks.

1998 when I was 16, and it was the Philips one posted above! I had loads in my teens but the favourite was the teeny tiny Nokia 8210 that I could fit in my bra for a night out. Debit card in one side, phone in the other, house key & lip gloss in the pockets of my silky All-Saints style combat trousers. Happy times!

'99 or 2000, half way through university. Any other Vodafone trium owners out there?

Ahh I had a trium in a pearly blue colour - with the v v cool pull out aerial 😁

I had an Eriksson (?sp) in '96 when I moved for my first grown up job at 22, thought it was amazing but my first 'mobile' phone that I used was a proper 'car phone' which my uncle had between the front seats in his car. It was literally the size of two bricks and the handset connected to the main body by the same curly cord as a house phone. Can't for the life of me remember when though.

I remember the marvel and utter sense of NEED I felt when I saw my first touch screen smart phone when DS3 was small. Must have been 17 years ago maybe, the small girl I was in the 70's that loved tomorrows world still finds her iPhone today an absolute marvel, to have all the books and information in the palm of my hand makes me so happy.

1998, a group present from all my friends for my 21st. I was terribly disappointed! I didn't want a phone and couldn't think in what circumstances I would need one. I was starting an office job in a different city where I had a phone in my house and a direct dial at work, so if I was not at home or work I was obviously either in transit somewhere or out and busy so why would I want to ring anyone? On some level I still feel that way, being constantly 'on' exhausts me

redpepperr · 12/03/2025 22:23

My mum had one in about 1996 1997 I think and it was a silver squarish shape (I don't think it had a screen) but the microphone had to pop out and it was almost like a thin pencil with a thicker end to speak in.

I had Nokia 3210 about 1999 and LOVED my purple front screen!

Did anyone else used to write 'from xxx' back then? 🤣

Yes I still think it's weird that you can do literally everything with this little thing in your hand 😳

2000 or 2001. DH and I had pagers before that. Had them in 1997/1998.

Pic 1 is pretty much the pager we had.

Pic 2. The first phone I had looked something like this.

1993, a Nokia similar to below for work. It had an extra long aerial that you had to screw on if you wanted to make a call in most places. We had pagers as well.

I can remember discussing the idea of camera phones in work around then and trying to imagine taking a photo of a dress in M&S or somewhere and being able to send it to a friend to see what she thought. It seemed a wild idea

  1. When I started university. It was a Vodafone pay as you go brick.
FaithFables · 12/03/2025 22:26

1998, I was 20. A Sony Ericsson.

We had one from about 2000 which I was sometimes made to take when I went out so I could call to say I was going to be late. Once some helpful friends made train noises when I said I was at the station and the trains were delayed to hide the fact I was at someone's house. It was a Nokia something. The one I really remember was a but later, a blue Erricson, I loved that phone!

The first one I bought myself was in 2004, a tiny little sliding Samsung. I had my first proper job and took a contact out from an O2 shop.

2003 when I was at secondary school.

  1. I was 20 and my boyfriend and I had got a place together. My parents decided to buy us a phone (more for their reassurance, no doubt). I think it was a Motorola, had an antenna. Whoever had the car on any particular day took the phone.

I remember text didn't exist. You had to pay per call. It was probably a year or two later my sister told me that you could now send texts!

GU24Mum · 12/03/2025 22:28

1995 I think. My friend worked for Orange and I chose the Nokia from the wide choice of two phones!

Still remember my work Blackberry from about 2000 which I loved.

Danielle9891 · 12/03/2025 22:29

When I was 10/11 in 2000. I was in year 6 and would meet my friends in town.

HundredMilesAnHour · 12/03/2025 22:29

1993 - I was 23 - and I bought the iconic Sony Mars Bar phone (actually the Sony CM-H333 but everyone called it the Mars Bar because it was a similar size and weight). I loved it!

addictedtotheflats · 12/03/2025 22:29

Nokia 3210 in 2002, 14 years old

Notmydaughteryoubitch · 12/03/2025 22:29

1999 I think in time to head off to uni (aged 19) - Nokia it was and I loved it, so many happy games of hungover snake on that phone.

Ruebolive · 12/03/2025 22:30

About 2003 . But I didn’t really start using one regularly for about 2 years .

BestIsWest · 12/03/2025 22:31

I used to love my work Blackberry too. Think that was around 2010 though.

Cantthinkofadifferentname · 12/03/2025 22:34

1994, £15 for 15 minutes a month on Orange. Handset also expensive to buy.

Nokia 2140, still have it in the loft, SIM was the size of a credit card

3678194b · 12/03/2025 22:35

Apologies, this one looks familiar, so maybe not a Motorola. 1998.

A Trium Mars bought from Woolworths early 2000s. It cost £49 plus £5 for a top up card and me and DP were so excited setting it up but we didn't know anyone else with a mobile phone !!

96 or 97. It was a blue Philips Savvy like the photo and then I had all the classic Nokias for a good few years, a Motorola Rzr, LG Renoir, more Nokias.
