If you could solve one unsolved mystery

Which one would it be? Missing persons, unsolved murders or even random unexplained events.

OP posts:

Reuben 'Hurricane' Carter ( subject of the Bob Dylan song 'Hurricane'). Was he guilty or not? I think most people connected to the case are now dead so we'll never know.

SiobhanSharpe · 06/03/2025 15:59

I used to live near the brothers who were convicted of Muriel McKay's kidnapping and murder.
A bit gruesome -- sadly the local theory was that her body was dismembered and fed to the pigs. (They lived on a pig farm.) But I suppose equally she could be buried somewhere on the farm or in Epping Forest.

Maddie

@WaneyEdge I can still remember the Crimewatch reconstruction for Janet Browns murder, it was chilling and gave me a few sleepless nights.

Yes it was. IIRC, police were baffled by the method of break-in and even a burglar said there was no way that an actual burglar would do that. The person had tried to cut a man-sized hole in the glass patio door and eventually just smashed their way in.

There were thought to be links with the murder of Carolanne Jackson; murders were in a similar area, similar victim profile. The murders were almost at the same time, 2 years apart.

I think they have some DNA but have never got a match. It’s one I think about quite often.

Serpentstooth · 07/03/2025 10:30

Trump. Elected twice by apparently sane people. Unfathomable to me.

theJackofHearts · 07/03/2025 10:45

I'd like to know more about Alice Glaston too, what she'd supposedly done, if she had family, what her life was like. There's an interesting post in unsolved mysterious on reddit, but not much information out there at all.

Yep it was the smashing of the glass that almost gave me nightmares (even though Nick Ross said not to let it 🤭)

The other thing that's always stuck with me about it was that Janet's daughter was meant to be at home that night and only stayed away on a last minute whim. The police thought the killer stayed in the house for hours (and even showered IIRC) waiting for her to come back. Really chilling.

I always thought Epping forest was more likely, especially as apparently one of the kidnappers has been trying to help the family locate Muriel's remains.
Mind you I read the other day that someone is now claiming that being fed to pigs is what actually happened to Claudia Lawrence. It seems unlikely to me, but who knows.

FKAT · 07/03/2025 16:53

I think feeding to pigs is unlikely too. Too easy to be get caught unless you own a massive pig farm where nobody else works. I think it's a misogynist trope - making the female victim even more abject.

Whatsthefrequencyalfie · 07/03/2025 17:10

It’s really strange seeing Lee Boxell‘s name on here. Still not found sadly but I’m glad that he is still remembered.
Me and my friends used to go to the youth club.

tapdancingmum · 07/03/2025 22:21

A millionaire went missing in December 1992 from a house just over the road from me. The police came and interviewed us, but we had both been at work that day, so we had left the house about 8 am, so had seen nothing.

As far as I know, he is still missing, and even though someone was questioned, he's never been found.

His name was David Martin, and I think about it often and have the occasional google, but nothing comes up

SlightlyJaded · 07/03/2025 22:58

@Whatsthefrequencyalfie I think of him often. It seems others do too.

There has always been a suggestion that others at the youth club knew something that would convict Bill Lambert but were too afraid to speak up - do you think that is a possibility?

I think they are moving away from this theory now and towards random killing by a local.

Interesting, thanks, I missed this. It makes sense to me, with the old Swiss gun. I never thought the brother made much sense given the weapon used.

WaneyEdge · 08/03/2025 06:45

It is. Thank you for finding that.

That link is behind a paywall @FKAT
What does it say please ?

MoreGuineaHyggae · 09/03/2025 01:25

What happened to Jack O' Sullivan? I'm in Bristol area, so this is quite close to the hearts of locals here. Why did a young man just vanish into thin air? He had plans for his life, not convinced it could have been suicide.

Lalgarh · 09/03/2025 14:38

I would like there to have been some resolution in the disappearance of Richard James Edwards from the Manic Street Preachers. Unfortunately it's fairly likely as to what happened, so maybe it's best to hope he might be out there

CarobBean72 · 10/03/2025 11:01

I knew someone whose brother faked his own death.

He was caught a few years later, because the police check from time to time (no body, plus he was due in court shortly after he vanished).

Silly s*d was at his mate’s house having a cup of tea.

There was a Netflix documentary on last year that featured three historical missing cases in the UK and all were so intriguing. How grown adults can just disappear without trace is disturbing.
Claudia Lawrence was one.

I know someone who disappeared. He was travelling from A to B and went missing en route. He turned up eventually - he had gone for a walk and had a fatal accident in a remote area - but it took a couple of years.

Esther Dingley also took some time to be found. There were suggestions she had been kidnapped but it was an accident. I guess there are accidents where people never get found.

There was that case a little while ago where a car full of young people went missing. Turned out they had had a crash but weren’t found for days.
There was another where the driver had crashed into the middle of a wooded roundabout and wasn’t found for a long time.
