If you could solve one unsolved mystery

Which one would it be? Missing persons, unsolved murders or even random unexplained events.

OP posts:

I have a YouTube channel and produce videos a few times a year. I've covered a lot of mysteries in my videos. (Along with other mystery type subjects).
I'm currently in the middle of producing one about mysterious disappearances in US National Parks. It's something that fascinates and saddens me in equal measure. How can accomplished hikers of many years experience, just vanish with no, or not much trace? It always leaves more questions than answers sadly.

Aah I was reading about Stacey Arras the other day. The never knowing would send me insane I think.

I seem to remember a post on here years ago who alluded to being Ruth. She certainly said she was someone who’d disappeared off the face off earth, changed her identity and made a new life. Iirc people on the thread wondered if it was Ruth. Of course it could have been total bollocks.

I remember that poster but I was not convinced 100% she was RW. I thought she might have been except for one detail: She said that her parents did a lot of campaigning in the media a lot about her disappearance but Ruth Wilson's parents gave one appeal in the papers and news (this was before internet and social media were a thing of course) with one photograph of them looking sad and not much else. So I'm not sure . I would like to think that poster was RW though, living a new life in safety rather than her having met a tragic end which sadly seems more likely.

Dontlletmedownbruce · 04/03/2025 08:36

Trevor Deeley. How does a young man vanish into thin air?. I was the same age out on the same night in the same area and remember the torrential rain and taxi strike etc. I suspect he was hit by a driver who disposed of the body but can't see how no one else saw. Or fell into the canal or river and for some reason was washed away quickly. Either way I think (and hope) it was all an accident rather than something more sinister. I think of him quite a lot actually, and his family too

I’ve heard of the Beaumont children even though I’m in the uk. Read about them years ago and I’m sure that another famous mystery Tamen shud happened on the same beach (dead man with no identity) also very strange, I think they know who he is now though.

I'd forgotten about the Somerton Man, I listed to a podcast on that case, it was fascinating.

I'm in Australia so only Australians would know about the Beaumont children.

Three siblings taken at once, in the 60's, South Australia. Every time it comes back into the news, my parents, who were locals at the time, talk about how the crime caused people to start dead locking their doors & keep kids inside. They're still looking, although have a pretty good idea who took them.

I'm English, never lived abroad, old enough to have lived without the 'net and have known about them since I were a child.

Yes, them, or Ruth Wilson.
Also where my favourite expensive bag charm that I put 'in a safe place' in 2023 disappeared to.
And Claudia Lawrence.

deeahgwitch · 04/03/2025 09:51

In Ireland:
The disappearance of
Annie Mc Carrick
Jo Jo Dullard ( though I think I now know what happened there- the Gardai - Irish police- searched a property fairly recently.
Deirdre Jacob - again I have a suspect in mind. An evil man was working in the neighbourhood
Trevor Deeley
Philip Cairns
Ciara Breen - the suspect has died.
Esra Uyrun
Bernadette Connolly - her family believe they know who it was and he is dead.
Mary Boyle - I think the authorities know who it was. He's dead now.

UK
Ben Needham
Claudia Lawrence
Suzy Lamplugh
Madeleine Mc Cann
Andrew Gosden
Katrice Lee - British military base in Germany

I pray their loved ones get answers.
It's so cruel.

Barry Evans - Mind Your Language, not Eastenders character.
Carl Bridgewater

@KIlliePieMyOhMy I’ve never heard of the Barry Evans case he was found in Claybrooke which is where I lived for a while when I was younger

Johnny gosch is my contribution. I would love to know what happened and whether his mom was telling the truth when she said he visited her as an adult before vanishing again.

I don’t believe that poster was Ruth Wilson (if it was even genuine). Too many details didn’t match up. I seem to recall that poster said their family was very religious, which implied they’d disappeared to avoid arranged marriage/honour based violence or similar.

The Ruth Wilson case is just so bizarre. A lot of evidence points to suicide, but in that case why was her body never found? And why have the contents of the notes she left never been revealed?

Yes you're probably right. More likely to be someone else or totally fabricated. I do struggle to understand how someone could live a different identity for decades - you couldn't have a bank account, pay bills, work in official employment, etc. Guess you could be a total hippy cash in hand lifestyle???

I don't think it was her nor do I think she implied she was. Ruth didn't go missing for any reason to do with religion AFAWK.

I had a member of staff I managed go missing once, muslim family. Other managers/supervisors were going spare with worry and contacting her family, saying things all over fb-I took one of them aside (my senior) and told them to let it go, she may well be being protected.

Also when I worked for the police we had that happen often-I remember several cases of 'frantic'/worried' Fathers parents calling demanding to know where their young daughters (but adult!) were. We of course said they were safe and well, which they were. Young women go missing of their own accord often for very good reasons.

I remember now about the honour based and forced marriage thing, I had forgotten those. RW's family are religious but Christian and from a white British culture, so yeah, that part doesn't fly either.

CarrieMoonbeams · 04/03/2025 12:56

TW - photo of body in link

Has anyone mentioned the "Peter Bergmann" case? He was of probably German/Austrian descent, and well presented when he checked into a hotel in Co Sligo under that assumed name with a false address.

Over the following days he disposed of "stuff" from a plastic bag (assumed to be his extra clothing, but he avoided the CCTV cameras) and subsequently was found washed up on a local beach a few days later. He's never been identified. The post mortem showed that he was in very poor health anyway yet despite the fact that he must have had extensive medical records somewhere AND he had some pretty expensive dental work, his identity is still unknown.

I always thought that case sounded like suicide, with her being seen walking towards the river.

I want to know what's in the Voynich Manuscript, but also I don't because the likelihood is it will be mundane.

I'd like JonBenet's murder to be definitively solved just to shut up at least one of the smug lobbies. Either the "stranger did it" lot who think anyone who believes "the family did it" are stupid, or vice versa. I don't know why that case brings out such sneering arrogance but it does.
