Surprisingly good things in tins...

Hey everyone,

Just thinking about how happy I was to discover tinned 'greek' gigantes beans.
They're delicious and go with loads of stuff, and don't need heating. From the corner shop too so v convenient.

I'd love to know anyone else's favourite foods in tins that require minimum prep. Preferably stuff that's a bit beyond baked beans, tuna, sweetcorn, soup... Ideally available in the UK!

Thank you and looking forward to some ideas x

As my name in tomato sauce. Absolutely delicious.

Re-fried beans!

Tinned prunes. Have only tried Tesco's version, but they are delicious.
Tinned Pineapple chunks from Lidl in the large tins. great on Pizza

I want to rush out and buy tinned fruit; haven’t bought it for years.

i love black eyed beans and polpa (crushed tomatoes) from Lidl. Also love love love flageolet beans from Waitrose. It’s the only supermarket that does them now.

When i first bought my flat and the interest rate was 15%, i used to live on m&s chilli con carne in a tin mixed with 2 tins of beans....that on baked potato did me for a week, no wonder i was a size 10....

You must have bought the same time as I did! Used to eat similar food too. There was an M&S veggie chilli with bulgar wheat in it, and a some kind of veggie curry. I would only eat half a can at a time. I think the M&S food must have been a treat on pay day.

This thread just reminded me that I used to get tinned guavas from Ocado but they no longer stock them Sad has anyone seen them anywhere recently?

Marks and Spencer Chunky steak

Have you made a start on working through tasting some of these suggestions @BobbyBiscuits ?

I used to buy tinned plums in massive green tins - haven’t seen them for years though.

Grapefruit segments

Sainsburys still sell tinned plums. Bigger than normal sized tins but maybe not massive. We use them in porridge

They sound delicious!

For my fellow anchovy lovers I've found the best buy are sold at Aldi or Lidl – 69p a tin and just as good as the more expensive ones.

All the M&S tinned stuff. I usually keep one or two of their tins of ham & chicken breast in the storecupboard for emergency use.

Epicure asparagus spears – although they're hard to find these days.

And of course baked beans have to be Branston!

They are! They taste just like the guava sweet my mum used to make when I was little. I’m going to miss it when the last tin is gone.

Figs in syrup plus a beautifully illustrated tin to keep pencils in.

I use them in a chilli con carne instead of kidney beans as we prefer the texture, also in curries

They're good in soups too.

Cactusmad · 25/02/2025 11:56

i have a friend that loves bacon grill , I love the smell but can’t eat it . I’m pleased Heinz now do vegan tomato soup .

AInightingale · 25/02/2025 12:07

Any good the Heinz vegan tomato? Tesco do a pretty nice Tomato and Basil Plant Based soup in a tin and it's only half the price of Heinz.

Meandthecats · 25/02/2025 12:12

Tinned sardines in olive oil. Fab in pasta sauce with olives, capers, tomato and garlic. Also in a toastie with onion.

Meandthecats · 25/02/2025 12:18

Tinned salmon and crab make lovely thai fishcakes.

Another vote for Confit de Canard and Cassoulet.

I'm loving this thread! We had a 4 day power cut recently and whilst we were fine with the wood burner and a camping stove, a prolonged diet of cereal, baked beans (no toast) and cupasoups was a bit tedious to say the least! We decided we needed to get some interesting emergency tinned stuff in for the not infrequent times we are without electricity and there are some inspiring ideas here!
As an aside - the steak pies in tins were a staple when we first got married, I'd forgotten all about them! Not too good in a power cut sadly.

Do you not have a roasting fork for your log burner???

Meandthecats · 25/02/2025 12:25

toasting fork

CherryRipe1 · 25/02/2025 12:48

Spam (fritters) although it's probably an acquired taste. Ye Olde Oak ham is vile OTOH. Mushy with jelly & makes me feel ill.

Crikeyalmighty · 25/02/2025 12:52

Tinned ravioli
Epicure ratatouille ( I use it on cauliflower rice when dieting)
Ambrosia custard and rice pudding
Dolmades
Mutti cherry tomatoes ( great on toast)
Red kidney beans in chilli sauce
Lentils and beans generally for stews and curries
Tinned fish
Campbell's condensed soups work well in sauces

That's what I thought - really need to lose a stone.

I bet if you look in your sw books or Google m n s low syn tins ( I've done this with ready meals), you'll get some ideas.
I can imagine that chunky steak mixed with veg, sweet potato mash on top and another side of vegetables - sorted !
