Surprisingly good things in tins...

Hey everyone,

Just thinking about how happy I was to discover tinned 'greek' gigantes beans.
They're delicious and go with loads of stuff, and don't need heating. From the corner shop too so v convenient.

I'd love to know anyone else's favourite foods in tins that require minimum prep. Preferably stuff that's a bit beyond baked beans, tuna, sweetcorn, soup... Ideally available in the UK!

Thank you and looking forward to some ideas x

Dolmades and gigantes from Lidl during their 'Greek Week' (not a tin but their Greek black olives in a vac pac are amazing and last for ages in the fridge).

Nothing compares to Heinz Cream of Tomato. Though I do often buy own brand tomato soup. I used to be a slave to Baxter's Mushroom Potage but they don't seem to make it any more. :-( It was pricey but creamy and very mushroomy.

I always have tins of French green lentils, a couple of different types of bean (cannelini, haricot, flageolet for summer bean dishes), and I really rate the Portuguese chickpeas in jars from Lidl - much softer and more flavoursome than tinned.

For some reason, tinned grapefruit segments are delicious! I do like bitter and sour fruit though. I remember my mum getting through lots of tins of fruit pie filling back in the day.

For dessert, we love tinned mixed fruit with some cream poured on top.

I also love stewed steak too, could honestly eat it right out of the tin.

Apricots.
Sardines in tomato sauce or olive oil
Black beans

Where are people getting artichoke in tins, not jars? Or figs?

Waitrose
The fig tins are beautiful too.

Thank you everyone for such an informative thread! I'm so happy to know what to stuff my cupboards with!
I'm off to eat some more gigantes.
RIP tinned treacle sponge! 😀❤️ X

Stagg chilli. Sainsburys flourish range. Sardines in tomato sauce. Chickpeas.

Jetandianto · 24/02/2025 19:38

Boneless sardines in olive oil. Can be used to make pasta dishes such as bucatini con sarde, salads, toast toppings etc. etc. Very cheap and healthy.

BlueFlowers5 · 24/02/2025 19:46

Tinned pineapple - to go on a pizza.

eirefortriplecrown · 24/02/2025 19:51

M&S tinned bolognese sauce. Real chunks of meat in there. Non UPF. Also see their tinned chili con carne.

Yes. Figs from Waitrose in very pretty tins. I occasionally use them as vases.

What do people do with a tin of chickpeas? I know they're so good for you but I never know what to actually do with them.

Heinz Lentil and Bacon Soup is lovely. Good protein source and filling.

I use them in a chilli con carne instead of kidney beans as we prefer the texture, also in curries

Tinned spuds were a revelation for me. Great when you want frittata for breakfast without the wait.

This is a fabulous thread.

Tinned pineapple for upside down cake. Tinned pears are great with a chocolate sponge too.

Baxter’s lentil and bacon soup is lovely. I make my own but it’s never as good. Tinned ravioli is great with grated cheese and oregano on the top browned under the grill. Apparently M&S mushroom soup is good as base for pasta sauce but never tried it.

Stuffed vine leaves and I'm pretty partial to tinned salmon, mackerel and tuna

I agree with stuffed vine leaves , Asda sell them in green and white tins that has a plastic lid with a ( unless) fork attached. I can't remember the brand 🤔.

pollymere · 24/02/2025 22:17

Tesco veg curry as a Jacket potato topping 😋. The tins of meat are also quite decent for making a pie.

healthybychristmas · 24/02/2025 22:19

Tinned raspberries and tinned blackcurrants are amazing in crumbles. They have to be in juice, though.

SantaToSSD · 24/02/2025 22:26

I've recently started buying a tin of mangoes every so often to eat with yoghurt and granola for breakfast. It might not be nicer than fresh but I find fresh mangoes so difficult to get right, either too under or too over ripe. Tinned are just right every time.

KitchenDancefloor · 24/02/2025 22:32

This is a warm hug of a thread

It reminds me of my late mum who was never a great cook but handy with a tin opener.

We used to have

  • tinned chicken curry served in a ring of rice
  • ravioli on toast (was shocked to find out this was an actual pasta dish in later years)
  • sardines on toast
  • condensed mushroom soup as a sauce or thinned a little as soup with cheapo white bread
  • macaroni cheese on toast (as one pp said it always came out in a lump) which was only edible if you slathered it with ketchup.

I'm going to have to stray from my usual tins of sweetcorn, soup, custard, beans, etc and add some nostalgia shopping to my basket.

Also a can of tinned pineapple chunks mixed, juice and all, with sweet chilli sauce = quick sweet and sour sauce

I absolutely love tinned sardines! Very nutritious, and cheap too! Not tried the with pasta, but I'm gonna give it a whirl, thanks.
