Surprisingly good things in tins...

Hey everyone,

Just thinking about how happy I was to discover tinned 'greek' gigantes beans.
They're delicious and go with loads of stuff, and don't need heating. From the corner shop too so v convenient.

I'd love to know anyone else's favourite foods in tins that require minimum prep. Preferably stuff that's a bit beyond baked beans, tuna, sweetcorn, soup... Ideally available in the UK!

Thank you and looking forward to some ideas x

+1 for Stagg chili. I've been known to augment my own homemade chili with a tin of Stagg for extra depth.

Thanks for the tip. I shall try this. I think I have seen Stagg Chilli in B&M (?)

Can I ask - do you use the Stagg Beans and Beef or the Dynamite one? Thanks.

Crikeyalmighty · 26/02/2025 16:24

Ratatouille....Tip into an ovenproof dish, add chicken or a firm fish such as cod, cover and bake till bubbling and fish/meat cooked through.
This also works with fresh sardines which are in season just now.

In a saucepan, warm through ratatouille and a tin of chickpeas or butter beans or haricot beans etc for a quick vegetable stew.

Top a bowl of ratatouille with grated cheese & breadcrumbs, heat through in the air fryer. Eat with crusty bread for a quick lunch.

More ratatouille....warm through the ratatouille in a frying pan, make a couple of wells in the ratatouille and break in a couple eggs, cook to your own preference. Add plenty of black pepper, and olives, capers, anchovies chopped gherkins etc if liked.
This is a similar idea to Middle Eastern Shakshuka.

Mackerel in tomato sauce. Great stuff on toast.

Rambutans, longans and lychees

Came on here to say lychees. I must look out for the other 2 you mention. I've never tried them. Actually I've never heard of longans.

Tinned mandarins in juice I absolutely love them

tinned apples to make quick apple crumble

recently tried tinned spinach and potato curry it was really nice

tothelefttotheleft · 26/02/2025 22:24

@HangingOver

Couldn't you stab them like you do jacket potatoes to stop them exploding in the microwave?

i have a friend that loves bacon grill , I love the smell but can’t eat it . I’m pleased Heinz now do vegan tomato soup .

I used to love bacon grill but they have changed it recently and I no longer like it Sad
Am I alone in liking tinned broad beans? (I don't mind the skins)

Napolina five bean salad.

Tinned spinach may not be everyone's favourite, but I make a stirfry with cumin, red chillies, onions and garlic which DH loves.

Love tinned spinach! 😀

I do that sort of thing with thick tomatoey/beany soups, with smoked paprika and a bit of Tabasco if I want some heat. Or Heinz 5 beans. And you can just microwave this sort of thing in the bowl so there's no pans to wash.

Lentilweaver · 27/02/2025 08:38

What a great thread. I had no idea so many things were available in tins for quick lunches. Making some notes. Definitely need to buy the ratatouille.

I've still got a scar across the top of my thumb, from cutting it on a corned beef tin in in 1976!

i knew i had reason to be scared!
currently sporting an injury from an opened tin of cannelloni beans but corned beef tins are far more dangerous!

Tinned sausages as used by schools way back when. Delicious and nothing like those pale insipid Heinz beanz and sausages or breakfasts in a tin. My friend was head of an infants school & used to get freebies off the dinner ladies & we'd have school dinner night complete with steamed puds & jugs of custard. Wish I could find them now.

I used to get the tinned sausages when I was first married in the 70's. They had the advantage of being flat-sided, so they didn't roll around in the frying pan!

I agree. I don't get them that often but I do love them!

Deathraystare · 27/02/2025 10:37

I sometimes use tinned potatoes although they do have a 'tinny' taste.

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 27/02/2025 10:47

I remember sterilised cream!

There is also a similar product called Nata which can be used to make tiramisu.

IjustbelieveinMe · 27/02/2025 10:59

The tinned Heinz sausages and beans and Smash was my favourite tea as a kid lol!!!
