Surprisingly good things in tins...

Hey everyone,

Just thinking about how happy I was to discover tinned 'greek' gigantes beans.
They're delicious and go with loads of stuff, and don't need heating. From the corner shop too so v convenient.

I'd love to know anyone else's favourite foods in tins that require minimum prep. Preferably stuff that's a bit beyond baked beans, tuna, sweetcorn, soup... Ideally available in the UK!

Thank you and looking forward to some ideas x

@allfurcoatnoknickers I love smoked salmon and trout but I've not seen it in tins? Normal tinned salmon is ok but it's not my favourite. I prefer tinned tuna.

Anchovies, green lentils and kidney beans. Gorgeous

Another vote for Stagg chilli although they've changed the vegetable one (think it's 5 bean instead now) and I'm not so keen on the new one 🙁

Needanewnameagain · 23/02/2025 01:19

Tesco have a lovely lentil & vegetable bolognaise in a tin.

AnxiouslyAwaitingSpring · 23/02/2025 01:20

M&S Chunky Steak. My grandma always used it (& only this one) for pies and stews and so do I. I won't even entertain any other kind of tinned meat but this one is really good.

murasaki · 23/02/2025 01:21

Crab meat. Surprisingly good.

coxesorangepippin · 23/02/2025 01:28

Sponge pudding
Ravioli

LemooonSlice · 23/02/2025 01:35

Tinned potatoes - to go in curry/ stew. They keep their shape and don't dissolve like fresh potatoes do while cooking.

ErrolTheDragon · 23/02/2025 01:35

All sorts of tinned beans. I like the Asda 5 bean mix (in water, no green beans) to add to a tomato and veg soup. Butter beans are good tossed in a bit of oil and baked. Lots of nice recipes with black beans.

Delphiniumandlupins · 23/02/2025 01:48

I read your title and before I even read your OP I thought of Fray Bentos pies and those humongous beans (and I'm not a great lover of beans apart from baked)!

I don't really buy tins but occasionally indulge in:-

Tesco own brand tomato soup

Pineapple for when I make (homemade) pizza

Salmon but only the expensive de-boned stuff

Pears, not often but there is something unique about the texture.

Mandarin oranges, again something unique about them.

Chick peas

Tomatoes

Corned beef, pretty gross stuff if I think about it but it does make the best stovies.

What's a stovie?

AuntieMarys · 23/02/2025 03:00

Apricots.I have them every moron porridge or yoghurt.
Perello olives

FictionalCharacter · 23/02/2025 03:04

Beansprouts, bamboo shoots and water chestnuts. You'd think they'd be soggy from a tin, but they're nice and crisp.

Ravioli

I've got such a craving for tinned ravioli. I was in the corner shop with my sister today and we were talking about it. It's £2.20 a tin now.
Sod it, tomorrow ( or rather, later today, I buy !).
I said it's lovely on toast. Sister said nicer with chips !

Another vote for tinned potatoes. I quite like them for breakfast.
Found a tin of salmon in my cupboard the other day. Made mini fishcakes - really nice.

Great thread @BobbyBiscuits

What's a stovie?

Stovies is a traditional Scottish dish where you stew the potatoes in a pot and add meat like stew or sausages. Everyone's stovies are slightly different and some folk add peas or turnip or corned beef. It doesn't sound that appetising but if it's done right it's delicious.

BaMamma · 23/02/2025 03:51

Tinned fish in tomato sauce, mackerel mostly, mashed on toast with a bit of butter and lemon juice and under the grill until it bubbles. Extra lemon juice and a black pepper!

Sorry, it’s a British staple I miss desperately as a former Londoner.

38woman · 23/02/2025 04:21

Cherry tomatoes

FallingIsLearning · 23/02/2025 04:32

Rambutans, longans and lychees

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 23/02/2025 04:45

Potatoes. So easy to add in to say a masaman curry.

Yes or sliced and fried.

Butter beans. Love them. have them in a salad,

Chick peas. Have started eating a lot more chickpeas in curries.

Peaches - make a very easy peach crumble. Also quite nice to have peaches and tinned pineapple crumble,

Mushrooms - was surprised at these but so far so good.

potatoes - air fryer recipes in sprites me, I always have these in stock now.

I remember in the 80s my Grandma used to buy thinned coleslaw. I think from Heinz. Anyone remember that?

I do and they had a potato salad too

Finerthingsinlife · 23/02/2025 04:58

Rice pudding, cold from the tin 😋

grapefruit segments

evaporated milk

I think also condensed milk might be good, which is used to make a Spanish latte (been meaning to try making this)

musicalfrog · 23/02/2025 05:00

Evaporated milk for a lush hot chocolate.

Fraaances · 23/02/2025 05:04

Confit de Canard (duck legs preserved in duck fat) - Whack them in the oven and they’re crispy and delicious. (Sprinkle Chinese 5 spice powder over the top and have with plum or hoisin sauce… mmmmm)

maldivemoment · 23/02/2025 05:10

@AMurderofMurderingCrows I bloomin love stovies! Grew up on them.
