Surprisingly good things in tins...

Hey everyone,

Just thinking about how happy I was to discover tinned 'greek' gigantes beans.
They're delicious and go with loads of stuff, and don't need heating. From the corner shop too so v convenient.

I'd love to know anyone else's favourite foods in tins that require minimum prep. Preferably stuff that's a bit beyond baked beans, tuna, sweetcorn, soup... Ideally available in the UK!

Thank you and looking forward to some ideas x

All nightingale, it tastes so similar to regular Heinz tomato

+1 for Stagg chili. I've been known to augment my own homemade chili with a tin of Stagg for extra depth.

Re-fried beans!

I like refried beans too , I use them to bulk out or thicken soup or chilli.
Tescos sell Tuscan inspired bean soup . It's mixed beans with a slight hint of heat , proper winter soup .

Aa pp have said chickpeas have loads of uses I use them to add texture and bulk to alsorts like stew curry , chilli,

Tesco do a lovely tinned chicken curry that the entire family likes. It's not in any way spicy, but has a lovely tomatoey, savoury sauce. That with some boil in the bag rice makes a super-quick 15 minute tea.

OK I've been to Waitrose and bought the figs. Looking forward to them with creme fraiche.

Another vote for Stagg chilli although they've changed the vegetable one (think it's 5 bean instead now) and I'm not so keen on the new one 🙁

I would have said Stagg veggie chilli a while ago, but don’t like the new recipe either. Morrisons is the one to beat! I go to Morrisons just for the veggie chilli

I haven’t read the whole thread, so apologies if this has been said….. But tinned new potatoes, yes really….., for salads or just a quick microwave with meat or fish. No peeling/cleaning or boiling

Sainsburys still sell tinned plums. Bigger than normal sized tins but maybe not massive. We use them in porridge

I do the same - with a bit of cinnamon and ginger. They also make a lovely cake - chopped in a sponge and then a bit of syrup in the icing with some stem ginger.

lilkitten · 25/02/2025 22:13

We have a community pantry where supermarkets and wholesalers give past-best-before food for free, to get it used. We picked up a tin of chilli, normally we just make our own, and were surprised it had all natural ingredients, very little processed food. We've now worked our way through trying different tins - I like Stagg chilli, and Sainsburys own brand beef casserole and bolognese (even has red wine). Also love chickpeas etc that I can easily make into a curry

With the Stagg chilli, my favourite time saver is putting it in wraps to make enchiladas, topped with pesto and grated cheese

Tinned sardines in tomato sauce, mashed with lashings of black pepper, spread on toast and grilled. Yum, yum, yum.

@JingsMahBucket A small pie for 2 people = 1 large tin added to a few sliced onions and a sprinkled cube of oxo is the perfect combination. The large tins are £4.50 each but worth every penny! And I’m a very, very fussy eater.

Edited

Thank you! We have a smaller M & S in our town. I’ll keep my eyes peeled for the bigger cans in there.

I’d like to extend my thanks to those who left a few tins of Princess Cherry pie filling in my local Waitrose. (I only took one 🤣)
Looking forward to trying it!

CherryRipe1 · 26/02/2025 09:35

I was in a local Indian supermarket scoping the stuff in tins thanks to this thread. Amazing selection of stuff. Anyone tried tinned ackees? They sell dried saltfish too.

Ilovecleaning · 26/02/2025 09:40

Vacuum packed tinned apples. Great for pie and crumbles. The listed ingredients should say ‘apples’ nothing else.

Ohyeahwaitaminute · 26/02/2025 09:51

It’s nice on pancakes too

Meandthecats · 26/02/2025 11:03

Anyone remember tinned Cream. Always part of Sunday tea with tinned fruit salad, with the one cherry and 2 or 3 grapes 🙂 wonder if it's still available

Neatlytrimmedladymoustache · 26/02/2025 11:24

Now have bought

RATATOUILLE NIÇOISE
with aubergine and peppers

Also

Tinned figs

Will someone remind or suggest what I should do with them?

AmyDudley · 26/02/2025 11:44

StormingNorman · 23/02/2025 00:39

I used to buy tinned plums in massive green tins - haven’t seen them for years though.

Grapefruit segments

Sainsburys do tinned plums - I had some this week, with rice pudding, they are really good.

AmyDudley · 26/02/2025 11:49

Do they still make potato salad in tins ? We used to have it when I was a child, it was great.
Also evaporated milk, my Dad used to have it in his coffee. I whip in up with jelly to make bogus mousse.

brokenwand · 26/02/2025 12:33

tinned potatoes prepared in the air fryer

DustyLee123 · 26/02/2025 12:59

Anyone else used to have sterilised cream? My mum used to mix sugar into it.
