For a change we have had glorious sunshine for a few days. It’s definitely lifted my mood which has been bleurgh for a while.
I’m not a lover of hot cross buns, as I don’t like the spices. When my children were small we used to go to a cafe attached to a local church and they would have warm vimto and a toasted teacake. I did enjoy those, but I don’t think I’ve ever bought them to bring home.
My next news is exciting for me, but feel free to scroll past, if it’s not dull enough for this chat 😄. My grandsons are coming here for three weeks during their summer holiday. They don’t live in this country and DiL is bringing them, then going home after a couple of days and my Dd will take them back. I thought they would only be here for Christmas this year, so it was a lovely surprise when they told me yesterday.
Chilli and wholegrain rice for dinner tonight. Looking forward to that. I’m keeping an eye open for Jersey Royal potatoes coming into season. I’ve got a couple of recipes from James Martin, with salmon, asparagus and Jersey Royals. On his recommendation I got some seaweed to use as salty flavouring when cooking them. I’m dying to try them. I also have an eye on wild garlic but can’t remember where I saw the recipe that uses it. I’m sure it was a salmon recipe though.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 04/04/2025 19:56

Hilda, just checked Gail's site. A bit pricey.

Umanresources · 04/04/2025 23:39

Thank you @Mumtobabyhavoc and @sueelleker . I looked at these and they look so good, so I might have a go at one of them. I don’t think they are the ones I had seen. I’ve even looked in my history and can’t see anything there. I have so many recipe books and get recipes sent by email that I can’t be sure where I saw it.
@HildaTablet Please enjoy your hot cross buns and tea. I have no idea how many different types of tea we have here. My OH is the one who drinks it, I’m a coffee drinker. I only drink tea when I’m not well or when I was pregnant! I do have a hankering now for a toasted teacake. I’ll have to see if I can find some.

MyrtleLion · 05/04/2025 11:02

The sun is still out here and the weather is getting warmer.

I had a 30 minute online interview yesterday and I've been invited to an in-person interview in London next Friday. We went to our favourite restaurant by the river for an early dinner and then came home and watched TV.

Umanresources · 05/04/2025 15:05

Good luck with your interview on Friday @MyrtleLion . Lovely sunny weather again.

Deathraystare · 05/04/2025 17:57

Hi Playmates! It has been a lovely day in West London land! The only thing to spoil it is all the "Look at my car, listen to my music" wankers driving around. So much traffic . I was walking past a roundabout and saw 7 buses stuck in a traffic jam. Luckily I decided to stay near my work in case I got back late.

@MyrtleLion

Good luck! Glad you had a good time at the restaurant.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 05/04/2025 18:43

Good morning, everyone. 🌤️
Gorgeous day here in YVR.
Spent yesterday on the sledding slopes with dc. It's the end of season, closes in a week, so we had the runs all to ourselves (it was also a weekday when kids are in school/parents working). Hopefully, I'll be getting Havoc into skiing/snowboarding next year which is why I've been making sure to get up the hill for sledding so often regardless of weather.
We've just finished up breakfast. I made choc-raspberry pancakes. Havoc got a foamed milk with it and I had a latte.
The dc are running relay across the living room and down the hall. 🙄 I'm finishing my coffee, sort of watching the news on tv and scrolling.
Must. Get. Outside. 😄🥱

sproutsandparsnips · 06/04/2025 11:22

Hi all.
That is a little exciting @Umanresourcesbut will forgive you!
So there is still snow @Mumtobabyhavoc? Is there a big difference between where you live and the mountains in temperature then?
Lovely heron @MissConductUS- they are such languid fliers aren’t they? I love to see them flying!
It is a beautiful day again. Will go to watch DS play rugby in the sunshine. Our senior team had a good win yesterday - they need to keep it up to avoid relegation. I made chicken curry to feed the teams which went down well - the opposition had seconds.
@Deathraystareits annoying isn’t it when people are antisocial. I did have to go and pick up litter that people had dropped whilst watching the game - I don’t know what goes through people’s minds. And don’t get me started on dog 💩!

HildaTablet · 06/04/2025 15:03

I made my buns.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 06/04/2025 16:29

Hilda, those look very professional and delicious! 😋😋😋
Sprouts, yes, it is often about 5c cooler in winter on the hills. There's still a good amount of snow up there. 🙂

Took dc to one of our universities, Simon Fraser U (SFU) yesterday to visit the observatory. It was a 10-year celebration of it, so lots of science displays - and cupcakes! 😁
I managed to get the pic of the day through one of the telescopes. Just absolute luck.

I completed my booknook.

I don't have a new one ready as I'm focusing on my interview.

Good luck with your interview, Myrtle, and lovely book nook!

We're in a cold, rainy weather pattern here. We need the rain rather badly, but it's still depressing.

Hilda, my posh Italian supermarket had hot cross buns yesterday, but they didn't look as good as yours.

Sprouts, it is fascinating to watch them fly. They have such large wingspans that they can beat them more slowly. I took these pictures at the reservoir in November 2023. I probably posted them then, but here they are again.

Miss, I've always thought herons are very prehistoric looking! Huge and scraggly. 😊

DandyDandylion · 07/04/2025 07:46

You have lovely buns Hilda sure if I made them they would taste good but wouldn’t look as fantastic as yours.
Good luck with your interview Myrtle.
I wonder if your herons have more grey than ours MissC as I saw one earlier this year and it looked completely white. Maybe they just vary.
Dd and I have escaped for a few days away just the two of us now it is school holidays. I have left dh to pull his hair out at ds who has GCSEs to revise for but is doing very little. We are by the sea so had fish and chips on the front last night. The seagulls are vicious here and they seem to love ice cream in particular. We spotted a couple merrily licking their ice creams and holding them way in front of them. Just in front of us the gulls stole the ladies ice cream and then a minute later they got the man’s. Everybody else was holding them close to their chest so escaped the gauntlet. I enjoy eating fish and chips sat out watching the world go by but having gulls continually circling overhead does take the shine off.

HildaTablet · 07/04/2025 09:17

Thanks Dandy - it was a recipe I hadn’t used before and I’ll tweak it next time to include more fruit and more spice. However, that won’t stop this lot being eaten!

Deathraystare · 07/04/2025 13:14

Wombled out the door this morning and the road was blocked all the way across. Bloody road resurfacing! I know it probably has to be done but you and I both know it won't last! I could have gone another way but will do so tomorrow as I have to go to the launderette.

@DandyDandylion
Talking of seagulls I still think it weird that I hear them in West London (though also heard them when I lived in Peckham!). Still think it is odd that they are not by the sea though I realise there are rich pickings away from the sea too!!!

Umanresources · 07/04/2025 18:47

Deathray and Dandy there are lots of gulls near me, because they come swooping down into the yards of the local High School after breaks and lunchtimes. I have no idea where they live because I never see them at other times and they don’t appear during holidays.

The photo shows what my DD and I did yesterday. We had a great time solving a murder in the afternoon and loved making our evidence/suspect/clue board and using our magnifying glasses for the fingerprint clues. I admit to buying the cork pin boards and sticking them onto a lovely big board. I may have gone slightly overboard and got a deerstalker and pipe as well 🕵️‍♀️ Oh and we managed to solve it as well.

@MyrtleLion I love your book nook. I just hope the Borrowers can make use of them at night. Arrietty would love to curl up with a good book.

That looks amazing! Was it a kit or a board game or an external event?

Deathraystare · 07/04/2025 18:58

@myrtlelion

Yes lovely book nook. Wish I could curl up in there now (Of course I wouldn't bloody fit!!). Uncharacteristically I am in a bit of a blue funk and wish to tell everyone to F off! Only one more hour to go!!!

The murder wall looks good but then I am feeling murderous! No reason just am!

Thank you. I'm so sorry you're feeling in a grump. I hope things get better soon xx

Umanresources · 07/04/2025 19:02

@HildaTablet your buns look much better than the ones I see in shops. Does Bake-off beckon? They just look gorgeous. Today I saw Mr Kipling hot cross pies! Very strange.

Umanresources · 07/04/2025 19:26

@MyrtleLion We’ve had a couple of the games. This was the one that came in the box and the other comes in a file, in an envelope and is called Detective for a day. We also enjoy the Exit puzzle boxes as well. We’ve always loved board games and puzzles as a family and now my grandsons love playing them as well.

I have spoken with my DH and he thinks we should get one to play over Easter!

I have an Amazon voucher from my DSD for Mother's Day (totally surprised and delighted), so i shall use that.

mathanxiety · 08/04/2025 03:51

We had a very quiet weekend, apart from Saturday evening when DD cracked a chunk off a crown she had put in a few years ago. She went to the dentist today and spent two hours being fitted for a new one, which will be installed right after Easter. She has to eat a soft food diet until then, and no sugar. We brainstormed a list of foods she likes and can manage with the temporary crown she had put in today - basically, mashed potatoes, mac & cheese, ramen noodles, tortellini, mashed peas, creamed spinach, scrambled eggs, milkshakes, smoothies. My plans for Easter dinner will need to be rejigged.

We're having a mix of wet snow and cold rain tomorrow. Such is spring in this part of the world.

Lovely looking hot cross buns!

HildaTablet · 08/04/2025 08:25

Thanks math, and Uman too. However, no danger whatsoever that I’d ever go anywhere near Bake-Off - that’s just too stressful!

We're off for a day out in Cambridge today. Hoping to take some pictures for the thread, especially as it’s a lovely sunny day and it should be looking extra-picturesque.
