Happy belated Mother’s Day. Had a lovely day with such a funny card from DD. If you watched the English Traitors, it’s Alex doing the doll backward singing task. It was so funny. I got new wine glasses, a murder game and a new book. My SIL was here as well and we had a FaceTime with family overseas. All topped off with my favourite sushi delivered from a local restaurant. Just a perfect day and the wine glasses were put to good use as well.

havoc yes, it was a sub.

Glad those celebrating had a lovely Mother's Day. DD baked banana bread and we discovered that Dcat likes banana bread batter.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 31/03/2025 04:55

God, I love a good sandwich, Math. 😋😋😋
Uman, sushi looks 😋😋😋

Had a great afternoon out with dc at a playground. Went for a drive after and decided to go through car wash which meant I vacuumed car and cleaned windows.
Was driving home then decided to go to bank. Saw multiple police cars in front of bank and police tape up. Thought it was a bank indcident. Nope. Pedestrian fatality with a truck. Saw the tarp covering the person. Awful. Havoc asked, What's wrong, mummy? I said it was a bad accident and someone was hurt very badly. Havoc said, We should tell them it will be okay and don't be sad. Jesus. 😥💔
The simplicity of a child's world.

Ahsheeit · 31/03/2025 08:58

Good morning all. Chilly this morning, isn't it! UK peeps - how rude that an hour of mother's day was stolen from us, eh?

Have just had a week off work, back today. Can never sleep the night before going back, even when I absolute know there's nothing hanging over me! Silly brain.

Happy Monday, everyone 😊

sueelleker · 31/03/2025 09:15

Ahsheeit ; It's funny, isn't it? I'm retired, and usually wake about 8 to 8.30, but if I've got an early appointment and set my alarm, I'll wake up two or three times in the early morning; and end up getting up before the alarm goes off.

Deathraystare · 31/03/2025 14:10

Glad you all seemed to enjoy your Mothers day!! Sadly my mum is no longer here.

@mathanxiety talking about sandwiches, I was wondering what to eat for lunch before my afternoon to evening shift. I went to our mini canteen (our proper one is being fixed up). I would have got a jacket potato but I would have had to bring it into work to microwave and it all takes time and we only get half an hour lunch. Anyway I don't much like sandwiches but I do like egg and tomato together and they had an egg/mayo/tomato one (Marks and Spencers used to do one and may well still do so). So that was nice.

Nice and bright out at the moment. I am going to have to try to walk more as I am getting very lazy. I don't want to end up bed bound like my mum was. Rather pathetic that I live in London and rarely go places. I should revisit the museums and parks more.

@mathanxiety

Funny things, cats. Our first one would stalk up the bed none too subtlely to get to Dad's scrambled egg or omelette. Daft sod always gave into her. That was the man that would not speak to mum for 2 weeks because she brought the cat home without telling him first! Then whenever he came home the cat would greet him at the door and he would be all over her. The rest of us were so much chopped liver!!!!

IWanderedLonely · 31/03/2025 21:46

First Mothers Day for me without my wonderful mum. I have struggled this month, as it's been my birthday as well, which I always celebrated with her.
I booked myself into a soundbath healing workshop for yesterday - totally out of my comfort zone. It was amazing i will definitely go again; DH met me afterwards and we went for a late breakfast, then DDs & grandchildren called round in the afternoon. So what I thought might be an awful day ended up being more than OK.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 01/04/2025 01:33

@IWanderedLonely I'm glad you had such a lovely day looking after yourself and having quality family time. ❤️

I was out doing errands and Havoc was with me. Shopped around at The Bay, which is closing, and it was quite empty and sad. It has always been my go-to department store.
Stopped at a favourite specialty grocery store on the way home and have now had a very satisfying dinner of rigatoni with lamb sausage, grape tomatoes, rocket, buffalo mozzarella and pecorino. I have a lovey lemon pound cake for dessert. 😋
Also saw some gorgeous cherry blossom trees. 😍

mathanxiety · 01/04/2025 03:10

IWandered it's good to hear you had a better day than you were expecting. The big days are so hard when we've lost someone dear.

havoc I also had a salad today - spinach with bacon, hard boiled egg, and sliced mushrooms. DD made herself a bacon butty for dinner earlier.

We're having a cold snap again, after lovely weather at the weekend. There are lots of grape hyacinths out, the magnolias are budding, and trees that i think are dogwoods are blossoming. I've seen a few daffodils too, and the grass is starting to green up.

Umanresources · 01/04/2025 14:24

@IWanderedLonely I'm glad you had a positive experience with the sound bath. It’s good that you were able to take some time for yourself ❤️ I’d love to experience a sound bath, I’ve only seen it on television, but it looks amazing. My friend once gave me a Reiki treatment and I was quite sceptical at first, but it really made me feel emotional and uplifted.
I’ve had a visit from my hairdresser today. He’s been doing my hair at home for over 40 years. We’ve gone from having children, now grandchildren at the same stages of our lives. I always forget to look in the mirror at my hair, after he’s gone, because he knows I’ll always like it.
The sun is shining today and all the doors are open. I’ve been sitting in the garden and listening to the birds chirping away. We do have a very vociferous Robin, which I love. I think it’s warm chicken salad for dinner tonight and we do have some strawberries and cream for dessert.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 01/04/2025 23:01

Is it okay if I invite myself over for dinner @Umanresources ? It all sounds so lovely. 💕

Please come and join us. You would be very welcome. It was delicious and we had a surprise starter of battered calamari with a tartare sauce dip! 😋

mathanxiety · 02/04/2025 02:06

A very chilly day today. I wore my heavy winter coat.

I had a mammogram appointment that went well, thank goodness.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 02/04/2025 18:13

Good morning, everyone. ☁️ Fully cloudy here and 8c.
I didn't sleep well, or enough, last night. I got about 4 hours total. I'm feeling okay, atm, though as I'm on my re-fill for my latte and have eaten two raspberry white choc hot cross buns. They were a bit meh, but I popped them in the oven and were improved a lot. I bought them at Cob's, an Aussie bakery chain. Do you have it in the UK? I've bought their choc chip hot cross buns for years, but they said they didn't make them this year. 😱
I might have to send an email.... 🤔😂. I usually buy at least 2 dozen for the freezer and a half dozen to eat that day if they make the drive home. 😋

DandyDandylion · 02/04/2025 18:24

We get hit cross buns in all sorts of flavours but my favourite is the original. I usually op toast them and smother them in butter but my grill is broken at the moment. Why is adult life all about getting things fixed?

MissConductUS · 02/04/2025 20:48

Math, it's been cold here too, with temps overnight around freezing. It doesn't feel like spring yet.

Havoc, I am chronically a very poor sleeper. A few months ago I started monitoring my sleep with my Apple watch. It gives some amazing insights into your sleep patterns and how often you're waking up. If you have an Apple watch, turn on the feature. All of the sleep data shows up in the Heath app.

Our bakery usually has the hot cross buns this time of year. I'll have to put them on my list.

Dandy, I know what you mean about getting things fixed. The electricians who worked on our kitchen remodel had to come back yesterday because the way they did the wiring for the dishwasher didn't pass inspection, so they had to redo it. At least it didn't cost us anything.

We have a florescent lighting fixture in the laundry room that's acting up. It's taking 5-10 seconds of flickering before it starts up properly. DH says it needs a new ballast, which would cost almost as much as a new LED fixture, so he's sorting that.

We got the quote from our lady builder on replacing the windows and sliding glass doors. The labor and the windows are going to cost almost as much as the kitchen remodel, so we'll have to think about it a bit.

There has been quite a thread on a chain bakery called Gail's that refuses to heat up hot cross buns for reasons. Obviously I shall boycott it.

Slow day today after some excitement yesterday for DH's birthday. Watching TV, an hour modelling and some AI training work.

Tomorrow we will be going out to local nature areas.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 03/04/2025 02:02

Myrtle, I'll look that one up.
Miss, I had a fluorescent light that is now an LED. The light is much better.

Spent the afternoon sledding with the dc. Started off rainy/snowy but didn't last long until the sun came out.
Had our snacks sitting in the snow looking at the view before the drive home.

Havoc, I'm looking forward to having the old light replaced, especially since we now have LED lights in the kitchen and elsewhere in the house. DH has ordered a new fixture from Home Depot. I can't believe you still have snow on the ground. The rain melted ours away weeks ago.

I've had my first heron sighting at the reservoir since last year. I hope the lower water levels aren't a problem for them.

I made the executive decision to put the snow scraper in the trunk and retire it for probably the coming eight months.

I woke this morning and realised I was out of tea, a disaster. I had thought I still had a box of teabags in the kitchen, but that was clearly the box I had just finished up. I had to order more for pickup at Walmart and make do with a teabag of DD's that was possibly as much as five years old. It wasn't too bad, considering.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 04/04/2025 06:33

Oh, no Math! Not a great start to the day. I had been drinking a different brand of coffee for 2 weeks and hated it as it was a lighter roast than what I normally have and just tasted like regular drip coffee even though I was brewing it double strength for my lattes. Very unsatisfying.

I've currently got two band-aid on fingers of each hand where the skin has split due to psoriasis and cold weather/handwashing/washing dishes. I've put steroid ointment on under the bandages.

I had the dc out at W Van this evening for the playground and to watch the sunset at the seawall there. Pics show Lion's Gate Bridge looking east and then sunset west over the pacific ocean.

I'm linking info that some might find interesting under the history tab.

For a change we have had glorious sunshine for a few days. It’s definitely lifted my mood which has been bleurgh for a while.
I’m not a lover of hot cross buns, as I don’t like the spices. When my children were small we used to go to a cafe attached to a local church and they would have warm vimto and a toasted teacake. I did enjoy those, but I don’t think I’ve ever bought them to bring home.
My next news is exciting for me, but feel free to scroll past, if it’s not dull enough for this chat 😄. My grandsons are coming here for three weeks during their summer holiday. They don’t live in this country and DiL is bringing them, then going home after a couple of days and my Dd will take them back. I thought they would only be here for Christmas this year, so it was a lovely surprise when they told me yesterday.
Chilli and wholegrain rice for dinner tonight. Looking forward to that. I’m keeping an eye open for Jersey Royal potatoes coming into season. I’ve got a couple of recipes from James Martin, with salmon, asparagus and Jersey Royals. On his recommendation I got some seaweed to use as salty flavouring when cooking them. I’m dying to try them. I also have an eye on wild garlic but can’t remember where I saw the recipe that uses it. I’m sure it was a salmon recipe though.

It’s been a beautiful day here too, and I’ve finally potted on my tiny tomato seedlings, which are starting to put on their second set of leaves. I need to start sowing some cavolo nero, which is a good crop for autumn and winter. Runner beans and French beans will wait for a few weeks but I’ve got the seeds ready.

I'll be making hot cross buns tomorrow (sorry, Uman, we really like them!) and luckily we now have plenty to tea to drink with them because I bought a bumper pack of 600 Yorkshire Gold teabags 😂

Havoc, Gail’s is quite an upmarket (ie pricey) bakery/cafe but it has been the subject of controversy - not least when it started selling its day-old croissants in a gussied-up 'twice-baked' form and charging £1 more than for the fresh ones. Also some areas have objected to having a Gail's moving into their high streets because they don’t want a chain store among their independent shops. Actually we've got one in our local high street, though I've never been into that particular branch.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 04/04/2025 19:10

@Umanresources I searched BBC Food for wild garlic and saw several recipes to try, but not one for salmon (at least not on page 1), so I then just searched "salmon and wild garlic" on Google and found a recipe recommended for easter (2nd link).
