My dad's family has a long family tree full of globe trotters and makers and losers of large fortunes. As a result, I have distant cousins everywhere, and even where I don't have relatives, some of them lived /were posted or saw military action. Mum's family were all farmers going back hundreds of years.

mathanxiety · 28/03/2025 02:19

By "losers" of large fortunes, I mean "spenders".

sueelleker · 28/03/2025 09:31

mathanxiety; My husband hated fish too-we once had just sat down at a restaurant when the table next to us had a huge mixed seafood platter delivered (we were abroad) We had to get up and leave-the whole place smelled like a fishmongers.

I took a break from decorating and reorganising today. I had a very slow lazy morning and then went to the British Museum to see an exhibition of Picasso drawings. It was a good exhibition and gave me lots to think about. I also managed to squeeze in 2 cups of tea and a piece of excellent carrot cake, so pretty much the best use of a sunny, but cold, Friday afternoon.
It is the last weekend for the exhibition which closes on Monday. I often leave things to the last minute and then going can feel like a chore, so, sometime over the weekend I'm going to make a list of exhibitions open or opening, and start making time to go and see them. I enjoyed this afternoon very much and need to do it more often.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 28/03/2025 23:35

@LollyWillow sounds like my kind of day! I also had carrot cake, but it was after a day of errands. I'm overdue to go visit a museum, though.

All this talk of cake has inspired me to stop by the posh bakery this morning to get cupcakes and possibly some donuts.

The dryer was installed yesterday, but there was some confusion about who was supposed to install the water line for the steam feature. There was one set of blokes who delivered it and reversed the door for me, and then a plumber came later to install the propane conversion kit. I assumed that the plumber would do it, but he didn't have the parts. So I called the appliance store and they were lovely about it. Someone is supposed to be here Monday morning to do it. The dryer works fabulously, I just can't use any of the cycles that use steam.

I dried two loads last night, one mixed load of mostly lightweight things and a big, heavy load of bathroom rugs. I used the auto-sensing mode for both and they came out perfectly. And it is much quieter than the old one. And very sturdy and well built, like you'd find in a laundromat.

It's been warmer recently and some of my Dutch crocuses are coming up. It's supposed to get to 25C today, and then back to colder weather tomorrow and next week. The cats are enjoying the start of spring.

Smart thinking with the door opening direction MissC.

We buy our appliances from a family-owned appliance store rather than Home Depot or Lowe's because the service is so much better. They send their own employees to do the deliveries and installations, and have an licensed plumber who does the hookup for anything related to water or gas. They're very good about accommodating requests like reversing the door, and if there is a mix up (like what happened with the water line for the dryer), it's one quick phone call to get it straightened out.

I had them reverse the door on the 22 year old dryer we retired too. Life is too short to lift the wet laundry over the dryer door.

They don't carry every brand of appliances, but they have a good selection and are often less expensive than the big box stores.

It's raining here, after an unseasonably warm day, so we can't cook out on the grill. So it's going to be a takeaway dinner of some sort.

More flowers are coming up. I spotted these when I went to the mailbox.

I'm afraid the lawn suffered badly during the drought last fall and will not bounce back this spring.

I came back from an early evening gym session thinking I'd make myself a quick sandwich before watching the NCAA basketball game (Duke v. Alabama) only to find that DD had ordered a sandwich for herself from Jimmy John's, they had delivered the wrong order, she had phoned to report the wrong sandwich, and they had delivered the right one and left the ham and cheese that had been delivered first. I added mustard, a few slices of salami, and some lettuce - delicious. I much prefer Jimmy John's to Subway.

Currently watching the game and enjoying some grapes.

mathanxiety · 30/03/2025 02:41

That duck has amazing plumage, Bizzey, and lovely photos of KP.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 30/03/2025 06:32

Bizzey, your visit to Kensington Palace sounds great! I love the pics. Also of the ducks. 😍
Math, was it a sub? I haven't had one in ages. 😋

I took dc to Flight Path park late this afternoon. Weather was gorgeous and so was the sunset. We also found some ducks and had a wander through a trail that took us over a little bridge and saw an old tree fort.

Mothers Day Flowers GIF by SiriusXM

Happy Mother's Day UK friends. 💐

bizzey · 30/03/2025 18:01

Thank you @Mumtobabyhavoc !

I have had a lovely lazy day!
To be fair I was exhausted from what we did yesterday...

Ds 1 made me breakfast in bed ... avocado and poached egg on bloomer toast and a lovely cup of tea 🥰.

MissConductUS · 30/03/2025 19:16

Happy Mother's Day to all who celebrate it today! There are certainly lots of threads with mums moaning about the rubbish gifts that they've gotten.

We're back to cold and damp here, but will still try to cook out for dinner.

Bizzey, that Victorian jewelry is fabulous!

I've had a lovely mother's day. Homemade cards, small gifts they bought themselves, a walk in the woods, lunch together. DS went out with friends after lunch. DH and I visited our own mums separately. Now I'm cooking risotto and having a glass of wine.

MyrtleLion · 30/03/2025 21:22

My DB and I took my DM for lunch. DH had bought flowers for her from me which was lovely. When I got home DSD had bought Mr a card, some chocolate and a gift card which was all a huge and lovely surprise.

As DH is on leave for the next week he also opened a bottle of wine and found some magnums in the freezer. Watching a crime drama now.

sproutsandparsnips · 30/03/2025 21:32

Thank you @Mumtobabyhavocand @MissConductUS.Had a quiet day here though did go to my swimming class at 8am (which was really 7am as the clocks have gone forward).
@bizzeythat looks very interesting - I do like a stately home/museum. Yes we had the same sudden cloud and wind yesterday - luckily I had chucked my big coat in the car. Lovely sunshine when I left - by the time I got to the game was very cold and windy!
DS is a bit downhearted as rejected from Liverpool. Luckily has offers from Cardiff and Birmingham which were his first choices but I think it’s knocked his confidence a bit.

DandyDandylion · 30/03/2025 21:39

Lovely Mother’s Day here too, we went to a museum. The cafe there has a social group called knit and natter ( known locally as stitch and bitch). They seem to mainly crochet and I think enjoy a project. Round every turn in the museum we saw their handiwork, totally unrelated to the museum itself. I tried to add a photo of a life sized crocheted horse but apparently the image is too big.
Then my dc cooked me a roast meal. This was my request as whilst they can both cook a bit neither has a clue how to put together a proper Sunday roast. The results were very tasty and included the best Yorkshire puddings I’ve had in ages.
I have been too busy to read any other threads about Mother’s Day but for me it is about time spent together. I got daffodils and a toblerone too which I am very happy with.
