Pumpkin, yes, beware the littles! 😂
Death, yes, we "spring ahead" an hour and did so this past weekend and "fall back" an hour in October.

MyrtleLion

Hope you are better soon. I bet the tv is shit. Normally is in the day time (until the quizzes come on!!).

Thank you. It turned out to be a one day thing. I'm on a new drug called montelukast for my asthma. I used to get bronchitis or pneumonia three or more times a year and since starting this drug a year or so ago, I have been fine. Every sniffle would become seriously debilitating and now I'm barely troubled. It's taking some getting used to.

I'm getting more success with job hunting, having an interview on Thursday, a company came back to me very quickly late last night after I submitted an application and wanted a lot more info. Today I was called by a recruiter about an interim role and another role in my field was advertised. It seems things are picking up.

I am also creating my book nook bit by bit and panic-bought another one yesterday in case I finish this one early.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 11/03/2025 21:06

Glad you're on the up and good luck at the interview Myrtle.

Just having lunch then will take dc out to play in the rain.

Love the idea of panic-buying book nooks =)

Yesterday a friend who trained as a house-organiser helped me clean up the worst shelf in the house. It's in use all the time. Took an entire hour but now it's tidy, unnecessary stufff was thrown and the best thing is that it's arranged so it works for me so it will hopefully stay tidy.

Then saw another friend later. Her mum is end-stage of life and my friend needs to talk everything over, but we also laugh a lot and feed our ducks. Then Mischief arranged a play date with a friend whose mother is always a delight to talk to.

English 'guest-grandpa' arrived last night for a few nights with an old English friend I haven't seen for three years so it was really a super day.

MyrtleLion; Montelukast is fantastic. My DH was put on it, and his rescue salbutamol inhalers kept going out of date, because he needed them so seldom!

They changed me to Fostair though I didn't believe the reliever worked. It turned out it needed to be shaken which was not in the patient information leaflet! 🤣

MissConductUS · 12/03/2025 12:46

Myrtle, I started taking montelukast last year for seasonal allergies, and found it very helpful. Well done on the job hunting. The job market here is very slow. Everyone's worried we're going to have a recession because of tariffs, so companies are not filling open jobs. We all think my daughter is going to be made redundant in the Federal government job she started a month ago because of the cutbacks.

The home improvements continue. I've just looked at the quote for our new storm door and the vendor is quoting it in black instead of bronze. Fortunately I have it in writing that we wanted it in bronze. He may have already ordered it. I'll try to find out later today. It's hard to get them on the phone.

The plumber who worked on our kitchen remodel is coming back to replace the propane gas pipes for our appliances and the ones in the basement for the furnace and water heater. The current ones are copper and too narrow to deliver enough gas pressure if the furnace and water heater come on at the same time. The copper pipes are also soft and subject to accidental damage. The current building code requires larger enamel coated steel pipes for gas, so that's what he's going to put in.

Storm door, hmm, never heard if one of those. Google tells me it is to protect your front door from the weather and I provide extra insulation. In the uk we often have a porch which would provide this purpose and also means you can shed coats and shoes in there and keep the house tidier.
I am having a very quiet week now dd is well enough to be back in school. Dh and I did a lovely walk yesterday up to a viewpoint as it was a clear day. We could see the full range of 7 counties through my monocular.

ShoesOnFirstThenCar · 12/03/2025 13:51

Been catching up, lots of news from everyone! DD decided to tag an extra week off on to half term by being ill all last week. I’m mostly just recovering from it all this week….resting and doing the bare minimum.
DH takes montelukast for his asthma and has found it excellent, he also takes fostair as a preventative and his asthma is really under control now. He still carries a ventolin pump all the time which imo is mostly psychological as he had so many nasty scares when he was younger.

bizzey · 12/03/2025 15:11

Looking for a small steam cleaner ...

Look how this one was listed !! 😲😲😂..

That's not the crevices and crackers I had in mind of cleaning out 😂😂

MissConductUS · 12/03/2025 15:52

Dandy, we have a vestibule, so we effectively have two front doors and a storm door. It's probably overkill, but we tend to have more extreme weather here than you do, and the occasional hurricane.

I've heard back from the door and window vendor. They have not yet ordered the door, and will order it in bronze. He wanted my credit card number before placing the order. He said it will take about 10 days to arrive, and he's working on the quote for our replacement windows and sliding glass doors.

I bought a pack of apples from aldi. They are beautiful, a lovely red with little white dots, like little stars in a red sky.

LollyWillow · 12/03/2025 17:42

I also have door news. I got home from Malta this morning and eight new internal doors had been delivered while I was away. My son stacked the doors neatly in the hall but it makes moving around the house quite difficult!
I sent a message to the carpenter and hopefully he will start fitting them this week, however I haven't mentioned to him that I still haven't bought the handles ...
The truth is that while I'm not sorry to lose the old Victorian doors, I am cross about having to buy new handles too. I like the old brass door knobs and don't want new ones.
Paint and tiles had also been delivered while I was away, so renovations are starting to speed up here, and my son and I may be spending much of the weekend painting.

sueelleker · 12/03/2025 17:46

Can't the knobs be used on your new doors?

MissConductUS · 12/03/2025 18:01

Welcome, @PalpatinesCalcetines, and thanks for sharing your apple shopping news. What variety are they, and how do they taste?

Lolly, we recently replaced DS's interior door, but the carpenter brought it with him and took the old one away. He replaced the handle and hinges, but the old ones weren't anything special.

Since the storm door seems to be a foreign concept in the UK, here's what ours will look like:

Andersen 10 Series 3/4 Storm Door

It comes with a "slow close" system that gently closes and latches the door when you let go of it, and a window that slides down to let in fresh air (with a screen to keep the bugs out).

I washed the bedding. DH secretes a lot of oil which stains the sheets. Today I washed it on coloured cotton with a presoak and prewash with stain remover. Five hours and 42 minutes in total. Still didn't remove all the stain. I'll wash them at 60 degrees C next week but the same cycle. Previously I've washed at 60 degrees on a mixed load but I had hoped the longer coloured cotton cycle might make a difference.

Interview tomorrow so spent the rest of the day prepping.

mathanxiety · 12/03/2025 20:37

Lots to catch up on. The time change always throws me and work has been busy.

Dcat has stolen my reading chair near the bank of deck plants that I keep in my bay window. I'm not sure I want it back as it's coated in fur now.

LollyWillow · 12/03/2025 20:44

Good luck with the interview @MyrtleLion.

Umanresources · 13/03/2025 02:28

Good luck with your interview @MyrtleLion .

i use Napisan from Amazon for my stain removal. It works wonders on my white tea towels getting rid of spaghetti sauce stains.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 13/03/2025 05:14

I took the dc out to play and have a walk after dinner. We ended up going to Olympic Village. It was fairly decent weather-wise with just a bit of very light rain, but it was a bit breezy which made me feel cold a bit quickly. Luckily dc were in full rain gear while I just had rain boots and coat. I know the kids weren't feeling the chill because I caught Havoc sitting in a very large puddle playing with some toys. I had to intervene on that... 🤦‍♀️☔️🌧️
Also, stopped into a grocery store for peanut butter and ended up adding froyo and cookies to my basket. It was my patriotic duty, though. 😁

Pics are of BC Place (football & soccer)) and you can see a bit of Rogers Arena (hockey) and Science World. And our treats. 😊

I like your patriotic choices!

Tariffs are the only Brexit benefit I can see so far but I imagine the UK will be next in line.

The interview went really well and I should find out soon if I'll be called back for a final interview soon.

HildaTablet · 13/03/2025 15:39

Fingers crossed for your job Myrtle

We had beautiful weather for a few days and now it’s turned cold again. I’m on the way home from work and it’s been pouring with rain although once it stops the sky is lovely and blue.

I feel a bit of a nervous wreck at the moment because I’m trying to deal with a neighbour over some planting for a shared area that we both look out on. She’s driving me completely mad with her total inability to be reasonable and her determination to get what SHE wants, regardless of what DH and I would like. She knows zero about plants and gardens as far as I can see (she doesn’t have a garden - we do; a big one) and her method is to demand the BIGGEST, showiest thing possible because that’s her whole persona. But she also wants me to do all the leg-work. So she’s simultaneously horrendously stubborn but also infuriatingly hard to pin down. I really want to scream at her but I’m being super-polite and friendly. It’s extremely hard. I know all of you will sympathise 😭😤

bizzey · 13/03/2025 17:36

#2 son has confirmed he has new accommodation ..ohh good !!

But he has a week of " no man's land " 😔 😔..

So will need to move all his stuff back and himself for a week 😲😲😂😂!!

I bet he has forgotten how much stuff he moved out of here in the first place ...and how much he has now 😄 😄!

Think we will pile up the back room as best as we can .
He will have a bed ...just no floor space ! 😂😲

Mumtobabyhavoc · 13/03/2025 17:54

Awww, Bizzey. How nice to have your ds2 back home.
Myrtle, sending good thoughts your way for next step in job process. 🤞
Hilda, it can be so difficult dealing with neighbours in issues like that. Tonnes of MN threads attest to it! Hope it works out very soon. 😊

Bit of blue sky here and it's 6c. Need to wrangle everyone up to help my mum to an appt today.

bizzey · 13/03/2025 18:08

Humm 🤔🤔 Mumtobabyhavoc .....
