With a side order of Vance, Zuckerberg and Netanyahu.*

Very true. I do like the idea of someone calling Vance an expletive though, he deserves every swear word on earth thrown at him.

Apparently Australian politician called him a 'knob' yesterday.

I believe that’s pretty much a term of endearment in Aus politics.

The damage being done to the US economy - including those sectors that traditionally align Republican, such as armaments - must be spectacular.

Why are the Americans, including the Republicans and MAGA lot going along with this. Americans hate Russia. Rightly or wrongly that message has been drummed into them and reinforced for 80 years. But Trump is on Russia's side so they are suddenly ok?

Because the warm feeling they get from supporting Trump beats the less warm feeling they have for beating commies. Bearing in mind they never knew what a communist was anyway. Most Americans are convinced that the NHS is a communist plot (and the London Underground a resistance movement).

Once a person has outsourced their thinking, then expecting consistency is a fruitless task.

I watched some of the Fox news coverage on the meeting. It was persuasive that it was all Zelenskyy's fault. If all you watch is Fox news, then you are getting constant messages supporting one view point.

Boiled frog...

And it happens on both sides.

America First is an enticing slogan. Things have not been great in America in recent years due to global events. It's an easy sell. Make it black and white, whereas these things are nuanced.

We see it here too. "Tories responsible for all the bad things that happened recently" was seen frequently on threads whereas some Conservatives were responsible for some things (Some more than others) but there were global events influencing the economy here. It's easy to blame the ones we don't like. Keir might catch the flack for what is happening in the US at the next election.

Brexit was portrayed as a black and white issue... Emotionally enticing British freedom. Harder to argue for a nuanced position. Three word phrases are easier to sell.

Lots of the population don't have time to read round the subject. Lots of the population have been brought up to support one side or another. Lots of the population think they know better than those "thick" people over there. It's easy to be tribal and swayed by the current trend.

Llttledrummergirl · 04/03/2025 08:32

The tories in 14 years were responsible for the shit show we are currently in.

Nothing justifies MAGA and Trump, trying only makes you sound like a fuckwit.

Keir might catch the flack for what is happening in the US at the next election.

Things will have to change pretty radically for that to happen. He’s being endorsed by UK politicians of every persuasion, apart from Reform, and his international reputation is riding high.

I watched the video and Zelenskyy muttered two words at separate times. It was subtitled “bitch” but could have been “hero” or “of course” - I don’t speak Ukrainian.

Yes I don’t really move in Keir-loving circles, and I didn’t vote Labour, but right now he’s winning and I feel we’re seeing him as a statesman and a person whereas before he was a ‘politician’. He’s proving that pressure is where he comes into his own and everyone I know has agreed the last week has exposed a completely different side to him. I just hope he continues the strength and doesn’t do a slow fade.

Spandauer · 04/03/2025 09:24

So much is not being reported in US MSM. DH has regular zoom calls with his immediate family and he says that they are not reading/seeing half the stuff that we are accessing. (And even our news is "edited"). Not just Ukraine news but also details of the destruction of checks and balances in all areas of government.

Only the American people can stop this. Dems politicians politely protesting at the State of The Union address just won't cut it.

I'm humming along this morning.

I have been looking at this site at (selected) world newspaper front pages. It is quite interesting to see the headlines in the rest of the world (including the USA):

Over 500 dead British and French personnel (more than 1,000 total European fatalities) and c10,000 injured in Afghanistan 2001-2021. The only time Article 5 has been invoked.

He couldn't have come up with something more inflammatory to other NATO countries if he'd tried.

Which perhaps he did.

(Or those around him did).
