With a side order of Vance, Zuckerberg and Netanyahu.*

NEW: The Minerva Research Initiative, established by the Pentagon to fund social science relevant to national security, is being gutted. Dozens of researchers studying threats from extremist groups, misinformation or climate change have received notices that their grants are being terminated.

I can’t comment on whether it would be useful but the Brexit negotiations concluded with the UK no longer being a participant in Galileo.

Has anyone else noticed that because the headline has been how disgustingly Vance and Trump behaved to Zelensky on Friday that they've barely commented on what Trump said about Putin?

"Let me tell you, Putin went through a hell of a lot with me. He went through a phony witch hunt "

This is surely what they, Trump and Putin have been saying in their phone calls. Putin probably said to Trump I need you to publicly humiliate that dog Zelensky on live tv in the Oval Office. Make it happen and make it great television!

phoney witch hunt is the hidden headline!

Only just had chance to do a very brief catch up with this thread. So forgive me if I have missed something.

But does anyone know how our tabloid press are reporting this, if at all?
I often find that they either mention nothing at all, or cast it in a different light.

I don't usually watch the UK press these days, for a multitude of reasons. But I am interested in the opinion of the good people on this thread.

From what I can see, since Starmer went to The White House, all the press has been united in support of Zelensky.

The Daily Mail were leading this morning with a headline saying that Zelenskyy used a slur (can’t remember which one) against Vance. So siding more as you would expect them to.

pentangles · 02/03/2025 21:31

I've also felt for quite some time now that Trump is almost irrelevant - Vance and Thiel are really fucking dangerous, If you'll excuse mah Fraaanch.

Now I wonder what Murdoch has in mind, then.
Sadly too many British people eat it up.

tobee · 02/03/2025 21:50

Well it was obviously too good to be true they'd be supportive @Igotjelly 🤬😤

This was the Mail on Sunday front page - so basically for Zelenskyy?

And this is a cartoon from Sunday Times (Murdoch paper)

Wow, that cartoon.

A titan and some small fry.

Serpentstooth · 02/03/2025 22:40

I think I read that Murdoch feels his USA political pets have become quite unruly and he's not that keen on all the rabble that Bigly's collected around him. I may be wrong but enthusiasm dimmed, hopefully.

I didn't expect that. Especially the lower image of Starmer with Zelenskyy. That said, I don't trust them.

That is a headline you don't expect to see in the Mail.

Interesting interesting.

Murdoch's always done this, though. He knows when to hold his punches and when to let fly. He publishes just enough mainstream stuff to have moments where he looks slightly credible but keeps pumping out a steady stream of Fox News level bullshit out of the other side of his mouth.

Yes, we must remember that the crippled and ill are destroying the UK economy. That's when he is back on track.

PerkingFaintly · 02/03/2025 23:17

That is, of course, all sadly true.

Tuesday is Trump's State of the Union address to both houses.

Last one was 2020 when Pelosi ripped up his speech while standing behind him. This time Repugs have all 3 branches of government so he'll be in hyper-Trump mode I fear. Expect bragging, bravado and bull shit.

Wonder where Emperor Elon will sit? Will the kid get a high chair next to him?

There was a lengthy essay/interview with James Murdoch in The Atlantic recently, the offspring are fighting in court over inheritance. It was fascinating, read like a summary of Succession, but more dysfunctional. I found it through a link in a Guardian article James Murdoch lays bare his relationship with 'misogynist' father . . . 17 February 2025.

PerkingFaintly · 02/03/2025 23:35

Wonder where Emperor Elon will sit?

I'm getting visions of Trump turning up at Balmoral with an uninvited Elon in tow, like a CF attendee of a MNer's children's party.

In Trump's previous presidency it was Ivanka who seemed to be providing Donald-soothing services. Apparently she would habitually waft into major meetings with an excuse, which some observers thought seemed to be checking he was OK.

Haven't heard much about Ivanka this time round, though maybe she's just not making the news. But what someone said here or on another thread (totally lost track ATM) about Musk and Vance buddying him suddenly makes sense.

Jaichangecentfoisdenom · 03/03/2025 06:28

I'm not quite sure what you are referring to when you write: "But what someone said here or on another thread (totally lost track ATM) about Musk and Vance buddying him suddenly makes sense", @PerkingFaintly, so I went in search of information and found this interesting article from the Grauniad a month ago:

https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025/feb/09/trump-musk-relationship

Trump Musk "buddy" combo sickens me so much I couldn't read it to the end, stronger stomachs than mine might be able to take it.

Or did you mean that Vance and Musk are in place supposedly to keep an eye on Trump as Ivanka used to? Either way, I'm hopeful that after the Zelensky WH meeting debacle and the way constituents are turning on their representatives in Town Hall meetings across the country (Rachel Maddow on the ball on this the Friday before last, sorry if this has already been linked to on here), : j

things might yet not turn out as Putin expects.

Edited

Interestingly I was listening to Mark Galeotti’s In Moscow’s Shadows podcast (and another one that I now can’t remember), as well as commentary from Steve Rosenberg and there are suggestions that whilst the really hawkish in Moscow are celebrating this isn’t true for all, including Putin, who go a degree doesn’t like the unknown and unpredictability of the current Trump inner circle. Even the Russians are wary.

Jaichangecentfoisdenom · 03/03/2025 06:55

Yep, all well and good having your puppet in place, but what happens when there's a particularly bad jerk and one of the strings gets broken and your puppet goes off on a tangent?
