On a serious note, I’m dreading it. I’m fully expecting a Ukraine ‘exposé’ rife with misinformation about Zelenskyy, a false portrayal of European history and whipping up paranoia among Americans that the rest of the world laughs at them while draining their wallet. All for the good of the American public of course. Nothing to do with firming up his ties to Putin and the spoils of war.

This (and everything else that is happening) makes me wonder two things:

1. Why is Russia so important to Trump that he'd rather have a relationship with them than Europe? Does Russia really have that much wealth, power or influence?

2. Why are the Americans, including the Republicans and MAGA lot going along with this. Americans hate Russia. Rightly or wrongly that message has been drummed into them and reinforced for 80 years. But Trump is on Russia's side so they are suddenly ok?

Oceania has always been at war with Eurasia...

I thought they'd sacked all the nuclear experts ?

I think kompromat or bribes. Remember in the last Administration when 8 republicans went over to Russia on 4th July no one knew why they were there or what they were doing and one of the top Russian officials at the meeting said that it was the easiest one in he had ever had in his life

Because the warm feeling they get from supporting Trump beats the less warm feeling they have for beating commies. Bearing in mind they never knew what a communist was anyway. Most Americans are convinced that the NHS is a communist plot (and the London Underground a resistance movement).

Once a person has outsourced their thinking, then expecting consistency is a fruitless task.

Rather than boycott President Trump’s address to a joint session of Congress, some Democratic lawmakers are inviting former federal workers to the speech on Tuesday as a way to protest the mass firings and funding cuts that have defined Mr. Trump’s first month back in office.

“What the Democrats are showing with our guests is that it’s the American people who are being hurt by the actions of Elon Musk and Donald Trump,” said Representative Brad Schneider, Democrat of Illinois. Mr. Schneider said he chose not to skip the address — other Democrats such as Senator Chris Murphy of Connecticut have said they won’t attend — so that the president “didn’t get a free pass” and would see the effects his administration has had on people.

When asked for comment, a White House spokesman, Harrison Fields, said Democrats were “exploiting the American people for political points.”

Documentary from Jen Senko about her father's transformation from a nonpolitical Democrat into a political Republican, mostly funded by a Kickstarter campaign.

Interesting take on how Fox News etc work. They managed to deprogramme her father when his radio broke and he couldn't listen to Russ Limburgh (funded by the Heritage Foundation, they've been around since the 1970s), they got a new TV and her mother hid Fox News and then they unsubscribed from his political emails and replaced them less radical ones.
