I don’t think what happened last night is anything more than Perverts Gonna Pervert. Undoubtedly horrendous and extremely serious, but a bit Tin Foil Hat to say it’s to get MN shut down. Paid moderation 24 hrs, a zero tolerance for written posts by Herberts rather than banning those who report them / call attention to the fact on the threads and software to intercept such images would be a good idea. Two of those things cost money, so who knows if they will be implemented 🤷

What happened overnight? I don’t want to derail, would someone be able to PM me?

A spate of images of CSA bring posted and only the volunteer nightwatch with limited powers to deal with it.

I think it is OK to mention. There were images posted on the site of CSA. If you want to understand what happened there are a few threads in site stuff.

Thank you.

That’s horrific

Stock markets round the world taking a battering in response to Trumps 'tariff tantrum'

Less than 2hours until the US one opens?

I saw a clip of an ordinary American being interviewed about the tariffs. He thought tariffs meant the countries they were being imposed on had to pay more for goods. 🙄

Don't call them stupid.

Meanwhile:
What are the "chances" that a forum that cuts across all demographics (i.e. parents) should "happen" to be targeted by behaviour most likely to get a site shut down ?

Yep New York stock exchange open 2.30 to 9pm GMT

Efacsen · 03/02/2025 15:05

Fairly small falls [around 1.5%] on Wall Street in pre-market trading

''That markets have not sold off more is perhaps an indication that traders do not quite believe these tariffs will stick. We’ll see if that optimism lasts throughout the day''.

BestIsWest · 03/02/2025 15:44

Mexico’s president says Trump is delaying tariffs for ‘one month’.

Edited to add that part of the deal is for the US will work to stop the flow of firearms south into Mexico.

Karma

''If Elon Musk takes a break from gutting the foreign aid agency USAid, he’ll see that shares in his electric car company are sliding.

Tesla’s stock is down 4.8%, making it one of the top fallers on the Nasdaq''
.

Quite aside from the issues around having a businessman in a position of power in a government (it's telling that is quite OK in US-land) is the fact that said businessmen can't possibly be in active charge of his many businesses if he is running the US government.

Unless (a) his businesses don't need much running, in which case why is he paying himself so much.

OR

(b) The US government doesn't take that much running.

bombastix · 03/02/2025 15:51

That's all it is. Trump asking what he will get in exchange for not imposing tariffs.

His default is that if a country is costing the US money then why not? He gets his concerns addressed.

Presumably he's leaving us alone as we say we will have trade talks with him.

bombastix · 03/02/2025 15:57

I suppose this bodes very badly for countries that don't pay enough into their defence budgets for NATO. Trump won't be paying for that either. The free lunch is over

TooBigForMyBoots · 03/02/2025 18:09

What happened last night was disgusting.

And it showed how lax or non existent Mnet security really is. I've been wondering for a while about the screening here. For trolls, shills and bots. It never occurred to me that images of CSA would get through though.

I'm at the point now where I don't know if Mnet is worth it anymore.Sad

I would miss you folks.

Llttledrummergirl · 03/02/2025 18:41

I'm very glad I missed last night.

How long can we drag out negotiations? Four years or so would be good

That'll mess with my word game threads and the jigsaw thread, annoying but as ever, bad actors make it worse for everyone

Llttledrummergirl · 03/02/2025 18:51

No cat tax! What are we going to do?

DuncinToffee · 03/02/2025 19:05

That is going to be annoying, now we have to click links and hope for the best?

Speaking of cat tax I was shocked to see a news alert (smart board poster lbc) on my way to the shops, stating that Scotland wants to ban cats. Amazingly, when I checked I found it was total nonsense.

I mean come on journalists - it's hardly a slow news day. www.bbc.com/news/articles/c0m1g8p4yy0o

Cheguevarahamster · 03/02/2025 21:39

No preview for me.
