The old adage’s of judged by the company you keep & when someone shows you who they are take notice doesn’t appear to apply for that fucker Farage.
I dunno I’m finding it very hard to keep positive, it’s like some insidious mist of evil all around us slowly choking us (I sound like I have covered myself in tin foil) I just feel so uneasy & some of the attitudes on some MN threads very very unpalatable, sorry I just feel really miserable at the moment.

I hope and believe that Reform will be a busted flush by 2029. But I feel the same way. So much hate about. Is it just on social media or is it the same in the real world? I just don't know. I wonder if it is a good idea to stay on Mumsnet when it is so toxic? I had a post deleted for ranting about it the toxicity, which is fair enough I suppose as it was a rant. But on the other hand, so many hateful posts are allowed to stand.

itsgettingweird · 02/02/2025 20:47

As much as I hate what Trumps dojng and saying and feel so sorry for the people in the receiving end of his rants.

There's part of me that hopes it'll put people off a Reform government as they are seeing what they'll get

Llttledrummergirl · 02/02/2025 21:54

@cakeorwine you are assuming a rational response. Trudeau always gets a mention from my conspiracy, antivax, Trump supporting relative, and not in a good way. Whatever he says will be given a negative spin and twisted.

He's up there with Bill "poisons all the African children" Gates, and Hillary "sacrifices babies to the devil" Clinton.

DuncinToffee · 03/02/2025 08:42

Sir Keir Starmer is heading to Brussels to join a gathering of European Union leaders – the first time a British prime minister has done so since Brexit.

Starmer is heading over the English Channel for talks focused on defence and security co-operation and will also meet Nato secretary general Mark Rutte.
The trip is part of what he calls a "reset" between the UK and the European Union.

OP posts:
bombastix · 03/02/2025 09:14

I would not get excited about this reset. My prediction is that the EU's public positions will be so unpalatable that Starmer will do very little in the next few months.

All eyes on Trump, who looks to be carving us out of his tariff wars and pushing hard for the trade deal Biden suspended to be revived.

This is an interesting moment because on the matter of regulation and alignment; where the UK is still very close to the EU, if there was a deal with the US, that would have implications on whether we could align with the EU or obtain a better deal on goods and SPS. My working assumption is it would become very difficult for the EU and the UK if we had.

Also no way should the UK enter an EU defence arrangement without a serious uptick in spending from EU countries on defence as a precondition. Predict no agreement there. NATO can cover that fine.

DuncinToffee · 03/02/2025 09:32

Poor Nige, this must sting.....

Donald Trump suggests UK could avoid tariffs and praises ‘very nice’ Starmer

“Well, prime minister Starmer has been very nice. We’ve had a couple of meetings. We’ve had numerous phone calls. We’re getting along very well”, Trump said

The issue of regulation and alignment is already here it seems. UK delays its banking regulation based on US moves.

Trump 1; EU 0

The sane washing of Trump

It’s a perfectly intelligible and ordinary comment from a journalist.

Edit: not a tweet, I realise.

He's a political editor for the BBC using words more appropriate to a piece on Valentine's Day in Cosmopolitan or Heat magazine.

Nothing about Trump is 'tantalising'.

bombastix · 03/02/2025 10:30

Tbh Trump is really testing every economy going; I assume he's going to be even worse to the EU.

Given the effective disintegration of the WTO as an enforcement mechanism on trade there will be very little countries can do to stop him.

I don't like him, but tactically he is smart.

Efacsen · 03/02/2025 12:03

Stock markets round the world taking a battering in response to Trumps 'tariff tantrum'

Notonthestairs · 03/02/2025 12:10

Well somebody somewhere will be making some money out of this.

SerendipityJane · 03/02/2025 12:16

Nothing brings a country together than when it is threatened by another country

Can't see that being true for the UK 2025. Farage and his hangers-on will be creaming themselves at the UK being assaulted by a foreign power.

Egged on by a media that would have been writing in German if this were 1939.

Keep an eye on the markets in the Word That Dare Not Speak Its Name. All this excitement is bound to drive the more credulous there. Just look at the people who have already lost their life savings in the Trump/Melania Memes.

(I have to write obliquely to evade the fearsome intelligence of the MN censors).

SerendipityJane · 03/02/2025 12:21

Presumably the bond markets will be reacting. Remember it was them that holed the Truss Project 2022.

It is a very real possibility that US could start defaulting on any bonds it has issued.

SerendipityJane · 03/02/2025 12:25

Oh dear. It seems MNetters really have pissed off some powerful folks.

I'd be prepared for this site to go dark - maybe forever.

If that happens, it was nice knowing you. Take care y'all.

bombastix · 03/02/2025 12:30

The issue of inflation and debt is interesting. Who does well out of that I wonder?

What do you mean Jane? Do you mean what happened overnight? I feel sorry for everyone who saw it and the night watch folk who had to deal with it.

There does seem to be some sort of targeting going on. The site has been running with loads of glitches and now this.

What happened overnight? I don’t want to derail, would someone be able to PM me?
