Everything needs to be considered in the round, as they say.

There are several mutually incompatible drivers at work here, and it may be wise to quietly let them do the heavy lifting and cancel each other out without making a fuss.

If Trumps immigration rhetoric is even half implemented, then US farming is fucked. Prices will shoot up and any notion of undercutting other sources is also fucked. Whilst there is a danger the UK could import cheap shit food from the US, we are much less likely to import expensive shit food. Especially given our own COL crisis.

If signing a token deal with the Mango Mussolini is enough to keep him quiet then it would be a strategic decision.

There is a lot of clever money looking to the midterms to jam Trump up - something his own side will be well aware of. So they are in a rush. And we know how easy it is to overlook the finer details in a rush.

Sadly UK farmers will probably be further shafted. But then at least they will be happy they it's what they wanted. Because if we were still in the EU ....

Mango Mussolini Love it!!!

The former East Germany has always been fertile ground for the far right. At reunification, sorting out the massive prosperity gap was not prioritised and we are all paying for it now.

bombastix · 22/01/2025 11:06

Well yes I loved being told I sounded like Reform voter. That was really constructive

The former East Germany has always been fertile ground for the far right. At reunification, sorting out the massive prosperity gap was not prioritised and we are all paying for it now.

If we want to see a prosperity gap, we don't need to look at Germany.

Sadly, the one thing a flying bullets-falling bombs war does tend to do is level up. All of a sudden the tp brass realised that the people they rely on to protect them have little incentive and could actually go over to the other side.

The historic terror of Napoleon wasn't necessarily shared by the public.

And during WW2 even the poster child for privilege and class - Lord Halifax -realised that Britain would have to change afterwards unless it wanted a heads-on-spikes revolution.

Everything swings.

Meanwhile the concept of a triumvirate seems to have resurfaced. Musk, Zuckerberg and Bezos all supporting Trump. I leave it to the curious to look the word up and what happened next. Meanwhile it's 38 days to March. Who knows ?

Good

Prince Harry settled his lawsuit against Rupert Murdoch's News Group Newspapers over alleged unlawful information gathering, his lawyer said, after the media group admitted he had been the victim of unlawful activity

As for the tone of this thread, I got a Bernie Gunther book from the library, I think it was recommended by Blossomtoes, and am really enjoying it Smile

The Trade Playbook for Trump

www.politico.eu/article/escalate-to-de-escalate-donald-trump-trade-offensive/

Which includes us having negotiations with the US.

The EU strategy does not include talking to the UK, to be noted.

Efacsen · 22/01/2025 12:10

PMQs already - doesn't seem like a week since the last ones

DuncinToffee · 22/01/2025 12:13

I forgot all about PMQs

Anything interesting to report?

I know I posted on another thread but I can't believe Trump's actions on the DEI front.

Donald Trump puts all US government diversity staff on paid leave, starting 'immediately' - BBC News

Does he not understand that it includes disability and religion, not just gender? What a cruel man.

Er, I think that was the point. No unintended consequences there.

Missed PMQs walking a rescue dog. Cutest damn thing ever so I'm going to pay some extra tax to cheer you all up.

Didn't Trump make fun of someone with a disability? So I doubt he gives a toss.

DuncinToffee · 22/01/2025 13:34

Which journalist deemed this a worthy question Confused

"The Prime Minister would not be happy with a member of his Government doing a Nazi salute", says Keir Starmer's spokesman

And some more 'Starmer resign' and 'a salute is not a salute' posts popping up

Is anyone watching Newsnight? Victoria Derbyshire is trying to interview the Qanon Shaman, he’s totally mad 😮 to think 1,500 people like him are on the streets and he says he’s already been out and bought guns

I just watched this. Very interesting that anytime she asked him anything difficult orto prove something, he essentially said "do your own research".

The way he kept calling her "dear", the utter wanker.

Zonder · 22/01/2025 13:54

Absolutely it was. Disgusting.

BestIsWest · 22/01/2025 14:22

Ugh.
I sat next to a full on Climate change denier in a class yesterday. She was talking to the woman on the other side of her thankfully but her argument seemed to be ‘It’s the sun.’. ‘Do your research.’ came up frequently.

No we should not be, the downside of any deal is lowering of food standards and that would then mean problems exporting into the EU, there is also access to Healthcare.

What exactly will be selling into the US that we don't already?

Trump wont introduce high tariffs, thats inflationary and will mean US services/products will be hit in return.

e,g Boeing is already in deep trouble.

Security? ha ha You think Trump will honour article 5? lets wait and see what he does with Ukraine and NATO first before rushing in to sup with the Devil?

agreed. I don't want signs outside every restaurant and bar saying "We serve food with ingredients known to cause cancer" and so on.

Never been as unwell as i have been everytime i visited the US and eat their food.

Following on from yesterday, I think this is what some people were trying to say ?

I do think it's supposedly a well known fact that with certain cases, until a trial is over there is stuff that cannot be put to the public. I used to think most knew this, but it seems not?

Why can't we as a nation be better at actual giving our population the knowledge of how our country and it's systems work? The amount of people who say things such as "Voting for PM" when they actually man voting for their local MP (who is not the leader of their party).
